Hi, my problem is that I have a site with information which should be displayed in two parts of my tree structure. Like this: - a - b - c (1st. subtree) - d - e - f - g - h (2nd. subtree) - i - j and the content in c and h should be the same. But I don't want the files (methods or whatever) in both subtrees, but to refer from h to c without the user in h realizing that he is in the other subtree. This means, I don't want a real copy of the content (because of update effort)... Any suggestions? Thanks in advance... Martin

AW: [Zope] newbie: problems with setting title when cloning a dtml-method

hi dieter, thanks for your contribution. but still it does not work ;( got a typeerror. which external method did you think of? jan -----Ursprüngliche Nachricht----- Von: Dieter Maurer [mailto:dieter@handshake.de] Gesendet: Sonntag, 1. Try: exhibit.title= document_title It may be possible that the security system will not let you do this assignment. Then you will need an External Method. Testing the performance of SQL Methods
by Peter Bengtsson 02 Jul '01

I want to find the perfect caching settings on our Z SQL Methods in the Advanced tab, and to do this I have prepared a little script that loops through a bunch different setting combinations and calls different little methods that does the processing. Let's not worry about the settings or the data analysis for the moment. What I want is a stupid little function that uses a SQL method and is very process heavy and should use the internal caching. So far I have tested a few different little functions: - One that reads lines from a file, checks if the line exists, adds the line. (about 10 000 selects and about 10 000 insert statements) - One that reads 5 lines from a file, check if one of them, adds the new of the five. More or less like the above but it waits a little bit - One that selects all records from a table 10 times per setting (10*5000 records selected per setting) None of these methods have produced any useful results, except from one: No correlation. The only deviations I see in process performance is depending on the activity of my Windows 2000. If Outlook decides to go and check for new mail, the particular test during that time takes a few milliseconds longer. Say something that I can code that will surely use the internal caching of Z SQL Methods. Is there a way of safely prove that Z SQL Method result caching is actually being done. Not a mathematician, yet Peter

debugging help needed
by Irene Barg 02 Jul '01

Hello all, I'm trying to parse input from a form to convert all string input to upper-case, before passing it on to a SQL method. So I created a DTML method to do this. In this 2nd DTML method, I call a ZSQL method to obtain the table's column names, then use the column names to access the corresponding values in the REQUEST. I must not be implementing indirect variable lookup correctly, because the script below produces the following error. How do I debug this? Thanks. Zope Error Zope has encountered an error while publishing this resource. Error Type: TypeError Error Value: read-only character buffer, instance My DTML method looks like this: <dtml-var standard_html_header> <dtml-comment> Loop over fieldnames in the family table, to lookup corresponding values in the REQUEST, then convert all lower-case values to upper-case. </dtml-comment> Before: firstmiddle=<dtml-var firstmiddle> <dtml-with get_one_family> <dtml-in names> <dtml-call "REQUEST.set(_['sequence-item'],_.string.upper(REQUEST[_['sequence-item']]))"> </dtml-in> </dtml-with> After: firstmiddle=<dtml-var firstmiddle> <dtml-comment><dtml-call update_family></dtml-comment> <dtml-var standard_html_footer> #####end#### -- irene barg ---------------------------------------------------------------- Irene Barg Email: ibarg(a)as.arizona.edu Steward Observatory Phone: 520-621-2602 933 N. A few days ago someone posted something about using the ZSQL stuff from an extenal method, not calling existing methods but building it on the fly. It went kinda like this... >From Products import SQL myconn = ZSQL.connect() mycursor = myconn.cursor myresults - mycursor.execute("select * from food") myconn.close() return myresults ...can anyone poin me to the code (or did I just imagine it?) thanks tom

RE: [Zope] Topic Security in DocumentLibrary
by Sedat Yilmazer 02 Jul '01

Hi Casey and all Zopers, Great ! Now I have some limited security in DocumentLibrary... Documents are not protected! It seems that we need a check that will control if the user has access to any of the topics that document has, or maybe a more restricted option : that the user has access to all of the topics that document has. What I like the most in DocumentLibrary is the file name attached at the end of the file object. That makes the life alot easier in the M$ world. I have tried the CMF but got tried of Open/save dialogs ( and sometimes twice! probably an IE bug) Secondly to post a document to CMF you have to go three pages. I can understand the first one ( that can be a dropdown box with the type info ("File", "Folder" etc) ) but I see no reason to have one page for metadata and one for the file upload. Is there a reason that I miss for that complication? I will include these changes in the next release, but here they are: In the document_browse and the index_chooser methods change the line: <dtml-in expr="objectValues('Topic Index')"> to read: <dtml-in expr="objectValues('Topic Index')" skip_unauthorized> That should help. Let me know if you still run into any problems. -- | Casey Duncan | Kaivo, Inc. | cduncan(a)kaivo.com `------------------>

Well, Jerome, I warned you that I was talking from half-recalled knowledge! I'd forgotten about nohup. I believe that might work fine. I'll give it a try and let you know. An "open console" means that somebody has to be logged into the machine for the script to run. Exit the logged in session, and all running jobs, background and foreground, get killed. That means that, since I have remote servers, I'd have to leave one xterm window running on my Linux workstation for each remote server, logged into the server via ssh or whatever. If my workstation has a power outage, that process on the remote server dies. No problem if I'm here every day, but if I go on vacation, there's no one else here who knows anything at all about Linux or Zope, and our servers go unprotected, and the people in California complain that they can't get to the intranet, and my boss complains to me. Or that's roughly how it happens. Perhaps a better way to think of 'an open console' is that the process (our script) expects to find a STDIN, a STDOUT, and a STDERR, which are normally attached to a display, also called a console. A daemon forks a child, which creates its own set of these, as well as sets up its own signal handler separate from the parent. This effectively disconnects the child from a display, so that when we close STDx (on the parent) and kill the parent, the child won't catch the signal to close that comes when we close the display by logging out. More or less, since I'm speaking largely from half-recalled theory, that's why just backgrounding, as well as simply starting a non-daemon script from an rc init script, as someone else suggested, won't work. However, I'm sure someone with more knowledge and experience could explain it in greater (and more exact!) detail. We've rebuilt and tested the win32 binary installer using a newer version. If you've previously downloaded the win32 binary, you should use the updated version instead: http://www.zope.org/Products/Zope/2.4.0b2/Zope-2.4.0b2-win32-x86.exe/view Brian Lloyd brian(a)digicool.com Software Engineer 540.371.6909 Digital Creations http://www.digicool.com
