hi, i should explain: the code below is in a method nav_stuff which is called from standard_header which in turn is called from an arbitrary document. when i use the getId() method, zope throws an "excessive recursion" error. any suggestions? cheers, G On 1 Jun 2001, at 13:17, E. PIL+Zope: what's wrong with this code ?
by Jerome Alet 01 Jun '01

Hi, I plan to use PIL in an external method to retrieve Images from de ZODB and transform them to PIL Images. When I use the following code I've got an error which basically says: "Not enough image data" This seems to be a PIL error, not a Zope's one, but I really can't understand what the problem is, except that I don't know what mode parameter to pass to fromstring(), I've tried "1", "P", "RGB" etc... but without luck: --- CUT --- import PIL.Image # get the logo GIF Image from the ZODB # This object exists and is OK when viewed from the ZMI logo = getattr(self, "logo") imgdata = logo.data if type(imgdata) is not type('') : temp = '' while imgdata is not None : temp = temp + imgdata.data imgdata = imgdata.next imgdata = temp MyPILImage = PIL.Image.fromstring("1", (logo.width, logo.height), imgdata) --- CUT --- I'm really not sure about the two first parameters that the PIL.Image.fromstring() function need, the first one is the mode, the second is the size. Could someone with a PIL+Zope experience show me a code snippet to convert Zope Image objects (in any format) to PIL Images ? Thanks in advance. PS: I use Zope 2.3.2 and PIL 1.1.1 Jerome Alet - alet(a)unice.fr - http://cortex.unice.fr/~jerome Fac de Medecine de Nice http://wwwmed.unice.fr Tel: (+33) 4 93 37 76 30 Fax: (+33) 4 93 53 15 15 28 Avenue de Valombrose - 06107 NICE Cedex 2 - FRANCE

What about something in these lines (untested)? logo = getattr(self, "logo") from StringIO import StringIO fromZope = StringIO() # tempfile in memory fromZope.write(logo.data) # save the data from Zope MyPILImage = PIL.Image.open(fromZope) fromZope.close() Then you ought to have it in "MyPILImage" regards Max M

Equality test: if sequence-item = document id
by Garry Steedman 01 Jun '01

hello all, i have the following code which works fine: <dtml-in "PARENTS[0].objectIds('DTML Document')"> <dtml-if expr="_['sequence-item']=='index_html'"> <li><dtml-var sequence-item> <dtml-else> </dtml-if> </dtml-in> but i would like to replace 'index_html' with the document's id variable, something like this: <dtml-in "PARENTS[0].objectIds('DTML Document')"> <dtml-if expr="_['sequence-item']=='this().id'"> <li><dtml-var sequence-item> <dtml-else> </dtml-if> </dtml-in> which of course doesn't work, but i'm not sure why or what i need instead! any help much appreciated! As soon as you go into a dtml-in another namespace gets popped onto the stack. When you set this_id outside th dtml-in you set it in the documents namespace. regards Max M

Accessing the calling document's REQUEST?
by Philipp Robbel 01 Jun '01

01 Jun '01

Hi everybody, Does anyone know if it's possible to access the calling document's REQUEST? I have a dtml-document that calls another dtml-document (in a pop-up javascript window). In this javascript popup I want to refresh the parent window with the parent's original request. Can the javascript-openend dtml-document access the parent's (i.e. calling document's) REQUEST? If so, to refresh the parent window I could easily do the following code in the javascript window: <a href="DisplayStaff<dtml-var QUERY_STRING>">Click here to refresh</a> where the QUERY_STRING would come from the calling document's REQUEST. Is that possible in Zope? Thanks a lot in advance, Philipp

Hi again, I have another idea :) Is it possible to access the calling document's REQUEST? After all, what pops up in the javascript window is another document. Can this document access the parent's (i.e. calling document's) REQUEST? If so, to refresh the parent window I could easily do the following code in the javascript window: <a href="DisplayStaff<dtml-var QUERY_STRING>"> where the QUERY_STRING would come from the calling document's REQUEST. RE: [Zope] Prerequisites for a desktop IDE, or any desktop app w/ Zope

Keep it simple; I don't think a non-python and/or non-free solution would mesh well enough for new users of Zope, supposing that all of the sudden, it became a popular tool for GUI-based enterprise applications. Uh, if you are going to create a framework of python classes to do UI stuff, why base it on a foundation of Kylix? Its not true x-platform at all and even if you used it to create a "free" (whatever that means) toolkit you just add library bloat by having to support toolkits on top of toolkits on top of toolkits, none of which are free. I love Python enough to not want to move away from coding in it, even for a GUI app. I want Borland-style RAD to do this, but I'm willing to wait until I get it free, and in Python (i.e. Boa-Constructor). In the meantime, I can code in wxPython, and have nice looking apps with themed GTK widgets displayed under X, and expect that all this will run on Win32 as well - all at no cost to me as a developer (money doesn't grow on trees, for me at least) and no cost to users as well. I'm not sure if I understand what you mean by an application as a toolkit? That doesn't make sense to me: function libraries are toolkits; class libraries are toolkits. Running all this within an app sounds like the functional equivalent of running GW basic code under DOS on a 8086: you are forced to run apps inside an interpreter, there is no runtime, and this is not transparent to the user. Why force this kind of complication? To produce an IDE that won't create standalone applications, let alone ones that use simple, freely available toolkits? FYI, Inprise EULAs forbid creating competing products; for example, during the days when Borland marketed Paradox, they explitly forbit Delphi developers from using the BDE to create general-purpose database app workalikes to Borland products. Anyway, this is making the problem more complex than it needs to be; the only value Kylix has is as a RAD tool; it has no value for creating toolkits for development without the closed RAD tool, so what's the point? Kylix still has too high of a > barrier to entry for most developers to even be considered for any > open-source development. I see your point, partially. But is the problem with server-side development? I wouldn't consider to do anything in Kylix on the server side. We are talking abount a GUI, which is the only reason to move away from Python at all. What I'm thinking of is: We can build a generic application using Kylix or Delphi, which has all the components in it, which are needed so far. They could be made higly configurable, and finally, that Kylix app would be like a toolkit, like wxPython is. It would be compiled once, and the executable would be freely available. Applications for this tool would then we written in Python, completely. It would configure that generic app. With this cheap trick, Kylix would be turned into a generic GUI builder tool, at no cost. > wxPython has definitely rekindled my interest in doing some desktop > development, with the idea that Zope would provide a good middleware suite / > backend for those kind of apps. The task would be just to write such an app, not too hard probably. Delphi is written in itself, as you know. I have already written some generic application with about 20 generic widgets, which are all configurable at runtime. And Delphi is able to produce .dfm files at runtime and to read them back in. It is so self-contained that it is somehow waiting to be stolen as a generic app framework. I'm wondering why nobody does it. Maybe I should do this now. ciao - chris -- Christian Tismer :^) <mailto:tismer@tismer.com> Mission Impossible 5oftware : Have a break! Netscape Problems
by Chris Withers 01 Jun '01

01 Jun '01

Hi, I'm getting a bit suspicious about the number of times Netscape and Zope aren't playing together for me :-S Basically, on my desktop machine (WinNT 4, Netscape 4.74) I can't actually submit to any Zope sites. I click a form button but the browser just sits there with the N spinning and not doing anything. I thought that was just my machine, but now on this laptop (Win2000, Netscape 4.74) the same thing is happening. I'm also getting the problem wit hthe browser constantly redirecting in a very short loop. IIRC, this is 'cos it's trying to get a linked stylesheet where Netscape has a bug, so I disabled sylesheets in my management options, but I still get exactly the same problem :-( Has anyone else experienced any of the above and does anyone have any solutions? cheers, Chris

RE: [Zope] dtml-tree: controlling expanded nodes
by Dunigan, Craig 01 Jun '01

Markus, I've been spending a lot of time looking into exactly this. The short answer seems to be no. The long answer is: lots of folks have tried, all have given up (that I can tell so far). It seems it would require modifying the source for the tree tag, or figuring out (without documentation, just by reading the source) how to manipulate some of the tree variables, like tree-e. From the mail list archives I've read, it looks like we can't even be sure of how the tree will respond to these variables, since it's written to *set* them, not receive them already set. I haven't given up yet, so if I come up with anything better I'll let you (and the list) know.
