URLs in Z2.log

Zope's log file currently records the URL as sent by the http client in its http access log. In the case of an FTP request it logs an equivalent URL, synthesized by ZServer. I am beginning to believe that this is subtly wrong...... What it really needs to log is the URL of the published method. This makes a difference in only a few situations: 1. In a POST request, if the body contains a :method parameter. 2. In an xmlrpc request, which is also POST, where the message method name is contained in the method body, and possibly sub-object names to. Should ZServer be changed so that it logs a longer, more accurate, synthesized URL for these POST requests, much like it does for FTP? Toby Dickenson tdickenson(a)geminidataloggers.com

Some advice on "best" practice?

Do they conform to some standard web log format? 2) What the best shopping cart/e-commerce solution for use with Zope? (What's being used successfully out there on real live websites?) Bill, OK, everybody calm down. The 'client' as I mentioned is not a full blown, singing and dancing bear fighting sort of thing. It's purely a proof of concept. It connects, it sends messages, it receives messages, and the best bit is that it can send and receive binary files. All this is being done in a very haphazard, 'refresh the screen to see your new messages' sort of way. Just a small Python script. I'll do some tidy up this weekend and release the code to my Zope.org members area early next week. That said, I would love some collaboration on this project. I would love to spend more time on this, but my very young family has to come first. I'ts probably going to be quite slow work for me, so any help would be f'in marvellous. The Jabber Server I have running though is open and available to anyone that is interested in this sort of thing. It is on www.zope.co.uk:5222, it has the WCS extensions and the HTTP extensions built as well. It hasn't got a lot of the extra transports like ICQ, IRC, Conference etc.. But it works as a plain Jabber Server. I suppose I'd better describe the WCS and HTTP extensions. The WCS stuff allows connections through XML-RPC which considering that Jabber is a permanent connection based protocol, is no mean feat when it comes to maointaining presence. There are some docs available but the location of them eludes me at present. The HTTP stuff allows connection via a URL, which could mean creating a Javascript/DHTML based client, there are some examples which I'll get up somewhere as well. You can also connect of course in the traditional Jabber way, using the Python stuff on download.jabber.org. It would be interesting to see some Zope and Jabber integration work being done (apart from myself, of course), so feel free to use this server whenever you please. But remember this is a dev machine and it could disappear at any moment. As a kick start to other people, I've attached a very small script which shows how to connect via xml-rpc and how to send messages etc. This script is a bit flakey since the sessionid is cached on the server side for about three minutes, so if your having trouble it means that it can't connect because your sessionid is incorrect. You'll just have to wait, or rewrite the script so that it works correctly ;) The user and password in that script are real users, but they are test users, feel free to use that one in the short term, but it will probably disappear quite shortly so it is probably better that you create your own user. data.fs packing

How do I pack the Data.fs while ZEO is running? I can't seem to pack it. It just *tries* to pack it but nothing happens. Even if I use top no process is made. I don't want to initiate a Browser compatibility flame war. But is it necessity to bother all zope.org visitors with that zopelogo.png ? Please have a look at your User Agent statistic. There are many users who are using Netscape 4.x. If "RSS summary" you are refering to is the Zope module RDFSummary, then see the new version of it (1.3) which solves the winsock error problem, at least on Windows NT. I think this has been tried with Zope studio, which was abandoned. I am going to guess that this was too complicated. wxWindows/wxPython is likely a better solution because it is likely to be a lighter-weight toolkit in terms of development complexity... (http://www.roebling.de) It's not free and it's not Open Source, but it's only $US89 and it can act as a decent RAD tool. It can build a lot of your app's GUI framework. I have not used wxDesigner a lot yet, but I bought the BlackAdder personal use (beta) package. Largely a waste of money. It's debugger is nearly useless and BA crashes constantly. It's aspect as an extension of QT designer is interesting, and it bears watching to see if it improves when they bring out the real thing. Wing IDE is nice for debugging. Wing comes with source, it's just not Open Source. I think a combo of wxDesigner and Wing would be nice (and it's what I am planning to use myself till something better comes along.) not showing any views...

When I try logging into http://url:8080/manage it shows the view of index_html in the main frame instead of the management area. If I try clicking on any other folders, besides Quickstart and Control_Panel, nothing happens--the view of index_html just remains in the main frame. I have tried logging out and logging back in with every user, but I get the same result. I've also tried stopping and restarting the zope server. Any ideas why this is happening, or how I can correct it? Thanks
