Unsightly data.fs buildup?
by Tony Tocco 25 Apr '01

While adjusting security and roles I noticed some behavior that concerns me a little. If you create a new role, assign it some rights, delete that role, then recreate a new role with that same name, it retains the rights of the deleted role. This same behavior is exhibited when you pack and restart as well so that means that somewhere in the object database, junk is not being garbage collected when you remove roles. Is there an easy way to remove this information? Are there other scenarios like this that might cause the system to gather useless data? What about the difference between "sequence-step-end-index" and "sequence-step-start-index"?

Does NT prevent you to use port 80 as a normal user (as Unix does). If not, you do not need this user switching. Dieter

Re: [Zope] Add a property with a class constructor

You replace "PARENTS[0]" with the newly created object. Your object must be a PropertyManager for the "manage_addProperty" to be available. Otherwise, you may need to add properties to a property sheet. See embedded Zope Online Help --> Zope Help --> API Reference --> * whether PropertySheets support adding new preperties. Dieter

Forking the Mailing List
by Brian Hickman 25 Apr '01

Forking the mailing list may make sense, except for the idea of a "NEWBIES" list. In any community, the ignorant learn by listening to the more experienced. I suggest that the real problem is not that this mailing list covers too many topics, but that we need a better way to preserve, organize and retrieve the questions and the better answers. In parallel to forking the list, I propose that we, as a community, with DC's guidance, determine the best way to capture the value of the mailing list -- a repository of problems faced by members, coupled with solutions from other members. My proposal is that DC builds or blesses a detailed topic map re. knowledge of Zope (Installation, RDMS, DTML, Security, the various products, etc.) on Zope.org, and invites members to contribute to filling in the topic map with questions, answers, example code, etc. A FAQ + a topic map. ZDP started this process, but this tool needs to be the first thing one thinks of before they ask the list a question. I would love to buy a book that extracted the best questions and answers/examples found on this list in the last two years, weeded out the fluff, and organized the rest. Brian

factoring and personnel
by Chris Gray 25 Apr '01

Zope can separate data, logic, and presentation and have them all available as managed content. As we begin to mix Zope into our legacy site, I'm wondering how best to leverage this. In particular, I'm wondering about how not to have the two people who know Zope now have to do everything that uses Zope, without expecting staff who have enough trouble as it is with HTML trying to cope with Python or SQL or even the more esoteric parts of DTML. Has anyone written up more details on this subject, for instance, guidance on how to get the best fit between your staff's expertise and Zope's factoring capabilities? Has anyone laid out the training needs for staff specializations? Chris

ZMySQLDA or ZMySQLDA
by Harald Koschinski 25 Apr '01

25 Apr '01

Hallo, as I can see there are two independent DatabaseAdapters for MySQL. The first is from mordred with the current versions 1.1.4 (stable) and 1.2.0 (developement), http://www.zope.org/Members/mordred/ZMySQLDA. The second one is from andy dustman with current version 2.0.6 , http://www.zope.org/Members/adustman/Products/ZMySQLDA. I am running now zope 2.2.4 with ZMySQLDA 1.1.3 (the first one) without any problems. Now I will update to zope 2.3.2, so I am thinking again about the right adapter. Can anybody give me some informations about the advantages / disadvantages of both adapters. Why are there 2 different adapteres doing the same thing. Any help is welcome. Thank you zopistas.
