Thanks David. That does help. I think my confusion is in thinking about concepts from the ASP world and seeing how they are emulated at least in concept. Many of the flaws of ASP - most of which exist in the design pattern (or lack thereof) of how applications are built dont carry over into the ZOpe world due to its OO nature. Do you agree with this? I see the obvious difference of elements (what as you said would of been included in the asp world) being called as objects and pages being built from a few tags with supporting code contained in each tag object. >From that point - what is best practice? In terms of business logic and application logic - how do you (coming from ASP also) structure your pages and applications with Zope? Are you in fact using DTML to build pages and within each object your referencing other objects, html, and python scripts or what? I would be interested to see (or help design/draw up) some architecture diagrams showing process and program flows... this would be helpful to newbies like myself - which there are sure to more of. Now is the time to rally the troops - before .NET hits the public airwaves. thanks again, David Kovach dave(a)kovach.com SAP >From: "David Burton" <eloquence(a)eloquent-designs.f2s.com> >To: <dave(a)kovach.com> >Subject: Re: [Zope] asp request and response objects >Date: Wed, 25 Apr 2001 11:12:01 +0100 > >You seem to have a slightly confused idea of how to use ZOPE, but that's >perfectly normal - it kinda does that to everyone initially. >As an ASP developer that's trying to use ZOPE as much as possible, there >are >various things that would be done using databases >and a reasonable amount of code that you can do in a few lines of DTML. >For example, dynamic news lists, or dynamic thumbnail libraries can be done >more easily, and also things that there are products for. > >As for the response object - you have some of the functions replicated in >other features, but you don't have the response object as such. Proposal of forking the zope@zope.org list
by Dario Lopez-Ksten 25 Apr '01

Hello co-zopers! The mailload on zope(a)zope.org is quite large and I dare suggest that I am not the only one having some sort of difficulty in sorting out the various topics on the list. I propose that we split^H^H^Hfork the zope(a)zope.org into the following sublists, which of course only reveal my own topics of interest, but I have the feeling that they would actually prove useful, especially for new users. The proposed list of lists :) reflect topics that I feel are frequently discussed and/or topics where there is no obvious preferred way of doing things: Proposed list Proposed topic ------------- -------------- zope-db - Disscussion of (external & gadfly) database access to/from Zope zope-um - Discussion on how to manage users, and the various products to extend/replace built-in zope user management zope-ws - Discussion on how to use zope with other webservers (like apache, squid, etc) and related techniques/products (rewrite rules, SiteAccess, VHM, fast_cgi, etc) zope-adm - Discussion on how to administer zope and problems/bugs related to this zope - Current list. mostly on how to develop IN zope (as opposed to zope-dev which is on how to develop zope). Here are discussions on DTML and stuff... zope-newbies - For the zopistas-to-be :-) Topics for new users, simpler howtos, best practices, etc... Cooments? hi all, select_all_from_myTable refers to a Z SQL Method that queries via a 'GV Interbase Database Connection' object an Interbase database >> <dtml-in select_all_from_myTable> >> <p><dtml-var expr="myFunction(<dtml-var myField1>)"></p> >> </dtml-in> Patrick Lewis <plewis(a)inetarena.com> answers: > You fell for the old "nested dtml" trap. The result was that Zope asks me for authentification, that failed even with a valid user who has manager and owner rights. cu & thanx.

Is Zope.deb pkg cross architecture by virtue of Python or do I still need to start from source? I would really like to "get on the map/2.3.1" and start going through the Zope tutorial.

Calling a dtml-method that has an extension (Was: Re: [Zope] Creating files on server)

Hi again, For secure reasons I have dropped the idea of creating a physical file on the server. Instead I can create the files dynamically inside Zope and link to the method. I have a method called fncSmileGenerate.smil I call this from another method. Now when doing this I get the following NameError: Error Type: NameError Error Value: fncSmileGenerate The traceback is this: Traceback (innermost last): File /usr/local/Zope-2.3.0-linux2-x86/lib/python/ZPublisher/Publish.py, line 223, in publish_module File /usr/local/Zope-2.3.0-linux2-x86/lib/python/ZPublisher/Publish.py, line 187, in publish File /usr/local/Zope-2.3.0-linux2-x86/lib/python/Zope/__init__.py, line 221, in zpublisher_exception_hook (Object: Traversable) File /usr/local/Zope-2.3.0-linux2-x86/lib/python/ZPublisher/Publish.py, line 171, in publish File /usr/local/Zope-2.3.0-linux2-x86/lib/python/ZPublisher/mapply.py, line 160, in mapply (Object: index_html) File /usr/local/Zope-2.3.0-linux2-x86/lib/python/ZPublisher/Publish.py, line 112, in call_object (Object: index_html) File /usr/local/Zope-2.3.0-linux2-x86/lib/python/OFS/DTMLMethod.py, line 189, in __call__ (Object: index_html) File /usr/local/Zope-2.3.0-linux2-x86/lib/python/DocumentTemplate/DT_String.py, line 538, in __call__ (Object: index_html) File /usr/local/Zope-2.3.0-linux2-x86/lib/python/DocumentTemplate/DT_With.py, line 146, in render (Object: portal_properties) File /usr/local/Zope-2.3.0-linux2-x86/lib/python/DocumentTemplate/DT_With.py, line 146, in render (Object: admin) File /usr/local/Zope-2.3.0-linux2-x86/lib/python/OFS/DTMLDocument.py, line 182, in __call__ (Object: index) File /usr/local/Zope-2.3.0-linux2-x86/lib/python/DocumentTemplate/DT_String.py, line 538, in __call__ (Object: index) File /usr/local/Zope-2.3.0-linux2-x86/lib/python/OFS/DTMLMethod.py, line 182, in __call__ (Object: dspDisplayShow) File /usr/local/Zope-2.3.0-linux2-x86/lib/python/DocumentTemplate/DT_String.py, line 538, in __call__ (Object: dspDisplayShow) File /usr/local/Zope-2.3.0-linux2-x86/lib/python/DocumentTemplate/DT_In.py, line 713, in renderwob (Object: sqlGetShowClips(showid=showid)) File /usr/local/Zope-2.3.0-linux2-x86/lib/python/DocumentTemplate/DT_Util.py, line 334, in eval (Object: fncSmileGenerate.smil(clipid=clipid)) (Info: fncSmileGenerate) File <string>, line 0, in ? Re'f. : Re: [Zope] Running zope on port 80
by Francois-regis Chalaoux 25 Apr '01

As you can read in z2.py : # User id to run ZServer as. Note that this only works under Unix, and if # ZServer is started by root. UID='nobody' This is not effective on NT server. Thus, could somebody tell me Howto to start Zope as 'root', choose the UID when zope switches identity to a user specified at installation. I suppose with your answer I should be capable to 'mount' a NT network volume in Zope with LocalFS. Cheers, FR.

Hi Chris, I actually stumbled upon your Enlightenment posting a few days ago - found it not only helpful, but representative of the sort of movement thats needed/required in the space in which we work. Zope can really make alot of what we do so much more fun than the Microsoft way. Your posting was quite inspirational and honest - and reflects well on the ethos behind Digital Creations, Zope and all of us involved - past present and future. Call you a Zope evangelist or just plain helpful. Either way I hope to interact with you more as I strive towards complete enlightenment. jcNTUserFolder problems
by Erik Myllymaki 25 Apr '01

I am using Zope2.2.0 on WinNT. I have added jcNTUserFolder0.1.1 but can't get it to work. On the Detailed view, all the usernames for the Default Domain show up as "Broken User Domain\Username". On the Contents Tab, users form the Domain show up but I get an error message like: Error Type: AttributeError ErrorValue: 'None' Object has no attribute '__' Zope is running under a user that has permission to: run as a service, logon to the machine over a network, act as part of the operating system. Any help appreciated.

I guess that crash has damaged some essential infrastructure, the socket library, a Python module or a ".pyc" file. I would save my "var/Data.fs" (maybe install on the Linux system, to see it works). Then reinstall Zope, if necessary Python, and see whether things improve. The next reinstallation would be the socket library maybe Windows.... Dieter
