Limitations: you have to be a programmer to do anything non-trivial with it. That's maybe just my limitation though. I am a programmer, so I always try programming first and look for other ways to do things if the programming gets too hard :-) Best of luck, I can see no reason not to use Zope for what you suggest. No User Sources or Login Methods in LoginManager

Hi all, When I attempt to add a LoginManager object it has no User Sources or Login Methods to select from. The lists are blank. Does anyone know what this means and how I can fix it? I followed what documentation I could find and checked mailing lists, but was unable to find anything about it. Sessions and authentication

For the past several weeks I've been looking in detail at Zope and PHP, and trying to decide which to use for a web application (as opposed to a dynamic web site). Zope has a lot helpful infrastructure, but PHP seems more flexible. One of the scenarios I've been thinking about is the authentication/authorization mechanism. It's clear to me how to do this with PHP and J2EE; I was hoping that someone can explain to me how to do this with Zope. - The app would use URL rewriting for session management. - When a user accesses the site, he has a session but is not logged in - He can log in through a form - Some pages can be accessed whether the user is logged in or not, other pages must have the user logged in - If the user tries to view a page where he must be logged in, the server forwards automatically to a login form, and goes to that page when he successfully logs in - User information is maintained in a database. Rules for matching of usernames and passwords is as yet undetermined (e.g. strings are stripped, compared case insensitively, possibly multiple passwords for a username, with each password authenticating the user into a different role) - Once the user is logged in, he is given a cookie with a random string as the value. That string also goes into the database - If a user accesses the site, is not logged in, and as the above described cookie, the server looks up that cookie and auto-logs the user in if possible (so he is then logged in without having to type in his username and/or password) - If the user logs out, he cookie is cleared, the random string is invalidated in the databse and the user is not auto-logged in at the next visit. So essentially, I need URL rewriting for session management, and a form based login, with a flexible set of rules for the actual authentication process. I need cookies to be used as an optional feature which can auto-log in a user. If the user uses cookies, he can be auto-logged in. If not, he can't and must do it manually each time he visits. I had tried some of this myself, but with little success. Core Session Tracking is well documented, but LoginManager was much more complicated than I had thought, using many jargons that were hard to understand. In the end, I couldn't get much of it working. If someone tell me whether this is all doable with current packages, and a brief explanation of how, I would appreciate it very, very much. Thanks. They mysteries of logging in zope.

In the process of building a new login method for the Login Manager product, I thought it would be a good idea to have the beast log various indications of state out to syslog for later examination. ZLogger's interface is nice and easy and it looked like all I had to do to get logging to go to syslog was to set an environment variable. Unfortunately it just doesn't work that easily. Setting ZSYSLOG to log via /dev/log causes zope to crash straight away, setting ZSYSLOG_SERVER causes it to crash after between 10 seconds and a minute, and setting STUPID_FILE_LOGGER does nothing at all. Wading into the code I discovered a few things, and made some other observations: 1. There are no less than three separate logging systems used in Zope - logging via ZServer, logging via ZLogger and some form of debug logging via DebugLogger. They all seem to have different APIs. 2. ZServer and ZLogger both use a copy each of Sam Rushing's syslog module, but while ZLogger calls it properly, ZServer simply isn't. It doesn't appear to pass it a port at all. 3. Further up the line, the code that creates the logging object seems to pass ZSYSLOG straight through as a server address. I expect that a pair of patches to ZServer and z2.py will be able to fix the problem, but I'm interested if anyone has found any other solutions. John

Alan, Yes, I moved the mx folder and I got it to work today too and will put it through some excrutiatingly painful tests tomorrow. But so far, so good. ...I'll let you know how it goes. A note on the ZmxODBC install, the docs indicate that you should copy the mx folder to the Shared folder. This will not work (and is the default). The coding requires that you move the mx folder up one level after extraction it into the Zope tree. How to add new properties to default image objects?

I'd like that all the image objects of my site have more information default fields such as "summary", "keywords", "author", "links", etc, more like an album, and I'm looking forward to modify the Image.py file and its related dtmls. Can anyone explain me what kind of modifications are needed? I know there are photoalbum products out there, but guess I'm just needing the default properties to increase in a few fields. (The fact is that from time to time I need to import a large number of images, and I use ftp for the task. If the default image object already had the mentioned fields, it would be an easier task to just add content to it.) Thanks in advance, Ausum
