Diary of a wannabe ZOPISTA - Day 4
by Jethro Cramp 08 Feb '01

08 Feb '01

Hello All, this is my debut on this list. From watching it for the last couple of days it seems to be a very active community. I've spent the last 3 days immersed in ZOPE and ZOPE documentation, last night my dreams were full of ZOPE objects interatcting with one another. Whilst reading ZCMG and following along with the examples I came across something that is either a mistake or completely throws into question everything that I thought I had learnt about acquisition. The example occurs in the Chapter "Zope Applications and Products" in the first section "Creating Zope Applications using DTML scripts". Home the example is available online at: http://www.zope.org/Documentation/Guides/ZCMG-HTML/ZCMG.4.1.html In the example 'Stan' has made the following directory structure root |_ZAcme |_Products | |_Research | |_News In the Products folder he creates a DTML Method, index_html which is as follows: <dtml-var standard_html_header> <dtml-var logo> <H2><dtml-var company_name></H2> <dtml-var message> <HR> For more information, contact us at <em> <dtml-var contact_phone></em> <dtml-var standard_html_footer> All simple stuff. The method uses 5 properties on top of the standard header and footer which are defined in the root folder. In the example Stan goes on to create a folder 'Home' which is a sub-folder of 'Products' root |_ZAcme |_Products | |_Home | | |_Research | |_News 'Stan' then gives the 'Home' folder the 5 properties that are required by the index_html DTML method. In the example acquisition takes care of this and the DTML method works. When I code it, it doesn't work. Moreover this upsets my (primitive) understanding of acquistion which is that the index_html can only acquire properties from objects 'up-stream' in the path. As soon as I move the index_html page into the 'Home' folder everything works. The problem is that the file index_html accesses properties of a folder that is in the same level of the path as itself. My (primitive) understanding of acquistion says that the index_html can only acquire properties from objects 'up-stream' in the path. This is born out by the example not working for me when I try it as described. As soon as I move the index_html page into the 'Home' folder everything works. Shouldn't the properties belong the 'Products' folder? Or is it that I have misunderstood the example and typed something wrong? As a separate question. I keep repeating to myself "It's all about objects. Objects have sub-objects, properties and methods". Every now and then I have an epiphany and the clouds clear and I get a glimpse of the grand design that is ZOPE and I feel that I get a step closer to being productive in ZOPE. One of the first of these was realising that DTML methods are exactly that: METHODS of the folder that they belong to. In that case in OOP terms what are DTML documents to the folder that they reside in? Are they properties of the folder? TIA Jethro

RFC: a simple howto build zclass (catalog aware, nondefault catalog object)
by Bak＠kedai 08 Feb '01

hi i have a howto that *really* needs your perusal. the draft is at http://www.zope.org/Members/kedai/BuildSimpleZClass this is really basic, and is meant to get a real newbie excited. and along the way learn a few things or two. along the way, i may have left some things unexplained, mainly because i don't know how it works or how to put it in words. please correct any bad terms and definition that i used. comments, pointers, definition, why somethings work the way they do, are welcome. thanks -- http://www.kedai.com.my/kk http://www.kedai.com.my/eZine I will follow you! ..Damage Inc

Writing custom tags "through the web"
by Gerald Gutierrez 08 Feb '01

08 Feb '01

I've found custom tags invaluable in my daily J2EE use, and would like to do the same with Zope. I'd like to be able to do it like everything else I do with zope, through the web browser interface. Unfortunately, the only documents I've found relating to custom tags tell me that I must modify the Zope source code and write these tags as filesystem products or classes. Is there no way to write custom tags through the web in Zope?

Redirects within a Python Script-based Access Rule
by Walter Miller 08 Feb '01

08 Feb '01

How does one write a redirect within a Python Script-based Access Rule? For example, foo.com and foo.net both getting redirected to www.foo.com. Because I already have a virtual hosting environment using an Access Rule and a Virtual Hosting Monster, the easy albeit verbose solution was to create /vhosts/foo_net and /vhosts/foo-www and put a DTML Method "index_html" object: <dtml-call "RESPONSE.redirect('http://www.foo.com')"> in each of those folders and have the Access Rule direct requests to those objects. User Specifies dtml template
by Tom Freeman 08 Feb '01

08 Feb '01

hi, How can I create a user defined dtml document? What I want to do is to have an option to create 'toms dtml document', this will contain: <dtml-var standard_html_header> <dtml-var header> <dtml-var header-about> <dtml-var footer> <dtml-var standard_html_footer> instead of the standard: <dtml-var standard_html_header> <h2><dtml-var title_or_id></h2> <p> This is the <dtml-var id> Document. </p> <dtml-var standard_html_footer> how can I do this? is this possible? thanks in advance for any feedback, cheers, Tom. -- ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Tom Freeman Industrial Placement NISS, Eduserv Tel: 01225 323789 Fax: 01225 826177 Web: http://www.niss.ac.uk

RE: [Zope] VirtualHostMonster w/ ZServer
by Walter Miller 08 Feb '01

08 Feb '01

If I understand your example properly, when someone types in www.foo.com, the Access Rule I have in the root directory uses the Python script to send requests to the /vhosts/foo directory. I tried that and got it working as a test one level up in a directory I called /root because I didn't want to risk locking myself out, i.e. /root/vhosts/foo. Now, the second part of the equation is to put the VHM in the directory you want to be the root so all objects in that directory return logical path of / instead of their true physical path. In my example above, putting a VHM in the /root/vhosts/foo directory changes the paths of the objects in /root/vhosts/foo to just /root when using www.foo.com/root as the URL. I got this working as well. The one question I have is regarding the naming convention of the VHM. It doesn't seem to matter what the name/ID of the VHM is as long as "VirtualHostRoot" is used in the requesting URL. Likewise, you can change "VirtualHostRoot" in the requesting URL to something else like "testVHM" and as long as the VHM is called "testVHM", it works. Is there a preferred naming convention? Walter > What's the "best" way to set up a few virtual hosts using only ZServer? For > example, to make www.mysite.com/vhosts/foo and www.mysite.com/vhosts/bar > appear as www.foo.com and www.bar.com respectively. Do I need a SiteRite > product or can this work with just a VirtualHostMonster? Neither SiteRoots nor VirtualHostMonsters can do the job by themselves. They both need somebody doing the first half of the virtual host mapping -- sending requests for www.foo.com to /vhosts/foo. Apache can do this, but if you want a bare ZServer, you'll need to use an Access Rule. Setting the following Script as root Access Rule should do it, in conjunction with a VHM: ## Script (Python) "vhost_access" ##bind container=container ##bind context=context ##bind namespace= ##bind script=script ##bind subpath= ##parameters=self, req, resp ##title=Virtual Host Access Rule ## host = req['HTTP_HOST'] stack = req['TraversalRequestNameStack'] # Put path elements on the stack in reverse order. if host == 'www.foo.com': stack.extend(['VirtualHostRoot', 'foo', 'vhosts']) elif host == 'www.bar.com': stack.extend(['VirtualHostRoot', 'bar', 'vhosts']) Cheers, Evan @ digicool & 4-am

ZMySQLDA and Zope 2.3.0
by Oliver Frommel 07 Feb '01

07 Feb '01

Hi, I just wanted to mention that the new MySQL modules don't work with Zope 2.3. They seem to work (no broken Product. Open DB Connection) but then all SELECT statements return nonsense. I don't know if the problem is in the MySQLdb or the ZMySQLDA. Is there a list of the relevant changes in the API or data structures of Zope 2.3 besides the CHANGES.txt which lists only feature changes and fixes, AFAIK? --Oliver
