Interesting ownership behavior...
by Jeff Peterson 07 Feb '01

We are using Zope 2.2.2 on IRIX 6.5.x using ProxyPass in Apache to virtual host a domain that accesses its files from a folder off of the root. At the time of the development my cohort here had the only root access, I had only manager access to the specific folder in which I was doing the development. Yesterday, I set up a new domain in the same fashion, ProxyPass from Apache to a different folder off the root, to do this I needed root access, so I was added, and not feeling I needed a local access account we removed my local information from the user folder. At this point, all the files I created as the local user were, of course, still owned by that user. However, this user did not now exist, in reply Zope asked anybody trying to access these files to authenticate, even if they had already. I then added the username again in the local folder and it assumed ownership of all the files, which circumvented the issue. I reproduced this in 2.2.2, I was unable to do so in 2.3.0. Is this a bug, a feature, a freak occurrence and was it fixed or did it just "go away" as some things in the programming world do? TIA, ______________________________________________ Jeffrey D. help with LoginManager
by Joh Johannsen 07 Feb '01

07 Feb '01

I followed HowTo for using LoginManager with SQL, and when I try to access a page that is covered by that LoginManager, I get this: It looks like it is correctly trying to display the "loginForm" rather than the page I requested, so that seems normal. But the "loginForm" itself does not display, only the zope error. What does it mean? How can I find out what the problem is? Thanks, JJ

Product catalog/how to handle graphics?
by Ben Edwards 07 Feb '01

07 Feb '01

I am currently implementing a product catalog, which is both viewed and updated online. I have been using MySQL to store the data. Firstly I should say that I am very impressed with zope. I have probably spent around 4-5 days (i.e. 4-5*8 hours) and have set up zope and MySQL, done the site templates and created modules to add/modify product, display the catalog and display items for an individual item. The only thing that is missing is how to handle the graphics. Each product has a thumbnail (100*100) and a main graphic (400*300). Importing the graphics into zope and telling the database where they are is obviously the simplest solution but as all the rest of the data is in the database I really want to put the graphics there two. I guess there are two sides to this: 1) Put a couple of File Browse fields on the form used to add new products/edit existing ones. Then find some way of tacking this file from the local file system and getting it in the database (probably as a blob datatype). 2) Retrieving the image from the database and getting it to appear in a webpage (I guess a temporary stage or extracting the image from the database into zope may be required). The problem is I don't know how to do either of these things and also am not sure if I am going about the whole thing the right way. The reason I like using a database to hold things is because it has enables me (up to now) to not have to use any Python. As you can imagine this is very good for me as I am very new to zope and do not know python (also I knoqw a lot about rdbms). Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance, Ben PS I am thinking of doing some HOWTOs (like the inserting data into a database) such as inserting/modifying data from forms and displaying data from a database (single records and multiple records). This would form a kind of using zope as a front end for rdbms primer. Do people think this is worth doing.

calling dtml method from external method
by Marty Stitt 07 Feb '01

07 Feb '01

Hello all, I've created a simple DTML method, named TestZopeTime, to illustrate a problem I'm having: <html> <body> time: <dtml-var "ZopeTime()"> </body> </html> When I invoke this method directly through a web browser, I do get what I expect -- a display of the current time. No problem. However, when I try calling this DTML method from an external method, I get the error report: "Name not found or not allowed: ZopeTime" I can comment out the ZopeTime() call, and see that the External method is able to complete a call to the DTML method. I've tried installing ZDebug just now, but that hasn't given me any clues yet. I also re-read the "How-To: Using External Methods". My external method looks like this: def MyExternalMethod(self, PARMS): return self.TestZopeTime() I've also tried: def MyExternalMethod(self, PARMS): return self.TestZopeTime(REQUEST=self.REQUEST) It seems like a through-the-web call to a DTML method sets up a different namespace than when I call the same method from an external method. FWIW: I am triggering the call to the external method through xml-rpc. Any clues would be very welcome. Thanks in advance... Martin Stitt Esker, Inc. email: marty.stitt(a)esker.com

Please ignore my previous mail. I managed to ignore the mapping flag for dtml-in , which of course solved my problem. Luckily I have colleeges that are clearer in the head than me .... Best regards Petter Enholm

Handling created objects, not in the Zope database
by Petter Enholm 07 Feb '01

07 Feb '01

Hi, I am trying to map data from my SQL database into a list of ZClass objects. For all entires found in the SQL database I want to create temporary instances of ZClass objects, so that I can use the different methods in the class. The dtml-in call attempts to validate these elemets which causes the pop-up logon box to appear. I have tried to turn of validation in the source code and all my elements are displayed properly. Is there a way to "force" dtml-in into not performing this validation? Best regards Petter Enholm Snapper as

Its a good idea if people say what platform they are using. I got the MySQL stuff working (Win32) but the icon for the mysql connection is missing. would'nt mind but where its graphic should be there is a missing graphic box around 150 pixels wide which realy screws up the presentation.
