Problems with ZCatalog-indexing
by Tobias Kiesling 28 Mar '00

28 Mar '00

Hello all, I've got some problems with indexing in ZCatalog. First of all it doesn't seem possible to index words containing any non-ascii characters (most important german umlauts). On zope.org the only info on charactersets I found was, that there are some supported ones, but I couldn't find out which these are. How is it possible to have a correct indexed catalog on a german site ? The second problem is related with the first one, but not restricted to german characters. Words where a hyphen appears, e.g. names like 'Hans-Dietrich', aren't indexed at all, in the example 'Hans-Dietrich' cannot be found on the site, but 'Hans' or 'Dietrich' cannot be found, either. If I cannot fix these Problems, the ZCatalog is unusable in the site, as there are a lot of important keywords using umlauts or containig hyphens. Thanks for your help, Tobias Kiesling (tobias(a)stat.uni-muenchen.de)

Hello all, I've exported my www.linuxmednews.com site from my home machine where I developed it (and on which it was working fine) to my ISP's Zope. For some reason I'm getting the following error. Not sure why as again, it was working fine on my localhost. Any ideas? -- IV Zope Error Zope has encountered an error while publishing this resource. I found everything I needed, however the iteration doesn't work :-( Can somebody tell me why the functions below are not giving a result? def recursiveMethod(obj): result = [] if obj.aq_parent != None: result = recursiveMethod(obj.aq_parent) if obj.meta_type=='KBItem': result.append(obj.Title) return result Then call this method like: def GetParentNames(self): recursiveMethod(self) ------ OR -------- def GetParentNames(self): result=[] obj=self while obj.aq_parent != None: obj=obj.aq_parent if obj.meta_type=='KBItem': result.append(obj.Title) return result Thanks in advance, Tom.

using MySQLdb 0.1.2
by Hugo Ramos 28 Mar '00

Yellow, I don't know about all you but I'm trying to use MySQLdb 0.1.2 on NT4 + SP6a + Zope 2.1.4 The Installation Instructions aren't to precise on using it on win32 platforms and Zope doesn't show me the MySQLdb on the product list. Is there some special steps to install it on NT? I've seen the instructions page on zope.org and I know about having to aplly the patch and compiling the .py on unix systems.. but what about win32? anyone? tnks -------------------------------------------------------------- Hugo Ramos - hramos(a)ruido-visual.pt Ruido Visual

Re: [Zope-dev] Installation/MySql Operational Status

Ben, Hi... This topic is probably better suited for the main Zope mailing list so I moved my reply to it there. Err... we'd all love to see better docs written for this process. Maybe you can write them once you get it done. :-) No, Zope does not necessarily need to be installed from source, but I think the MySQLdb stuff needs python include libraries. Can you give more specific questions about your problem? Some hints anyway: - the MySQL development libaries need to be installed on the machine. - python 1.5.2 libraries should be installed on the machine "Ben B." wrote: > > Hello All, > This may be a semi-newbie question, but it seems to be stumping us all > around here. If so, please give me a hint.. My advice here is not based on work with Zope, but on years of painful RDBMS experience: I do *not* recommend storing large BLOBs in any existing RDBMS -- they aren't built for them, and generally make your life miserable when you try. Most of the reasons you would choose to use an RDBMS (performance, replication, stability, searchability, etc.) don't apply when it comes to large BLOBs; you are still much better off storing the "BLOB" in a filesystem somewhere, and then storing a path/URL to it in the RDBMS. With Zope, BLOBs present another issue: because they aren't standardized, each RDBMS has a proprietary API for BLOBS; the Zope database adapter therefore has to have custom code for each RDBMS, making the BLOB code one of the likeliest sources of weird, hard-to-reproduce bugs I can think of. In short, *don't go there*. Really, I'm serious. Tres. P.S. If you *have* to go there, use the Python base64 module to encode binary data. -- ========================================================= Tres Seaver tseaver(a)palladion.com 713-523-6582 Palladion Software http://www.palladion.com

External Method
by Tom Deprez 28 Mar '00

28 Mar '00

I want to make an external method which does the following : iterates over all the parents, if a parent is of a certain type, the title must be added to a list. However I don't know how to iterate over an object (ZClass) it's parents in Python/Zope. Can anybody help? def GetParentNames(self): obj=self result=[] while obj.parent<>nil: <-- this is wrong obj=obj.parent <-- this is wrong if obj.meta_type=='KBItem': result.append(obj.Title) return result Thanks in advance, Tom.

Who created this object?
by Chris Withers 28 Mar '00

28 Mar '00

Hi, I'm in the process of cleaning up our production Zope server and I've found a folder which has one file in it. I don't know who created either of them and I'm wondering if they're redundant. I'd like to find out who created the both the folder and the file and, if possible, when it was last created. How do I go about doing this? Cheers for any help, Chris

Zope hosting
by Marco Mariani 28 Mar '00

28 Mar '00

Hallo! I'm thinking about using zope to develop some sites. May you please advise me about a Zope hoster? I've looked at those listed on zope.org, but some of them offer just 20MB or have most of the site written in german. One of them I can't even reach, others don't mention zope on their pages, or are a bit on the pricey side. I need a flexible, expandable solution. I may need 40MB and two domains for a start, and more in the future. I have to install my products and use pgsql or mysql. Shell access is welcome, too.. Do you have some suggestion? Which ISPs do you think are best? - OR - Do you think I'd better install zope as a normal user, on one of those cheap ISPs that give me 500MB ? Thank you very very much.

Re: [Zope] Accessing ZSQL connection from external method
by Ragnar Beer 28 Mar '00

28 Mar '00

I just found a HOWTO by jpenny: Accessing a ZSQL method from an external method. It helps a bit but actually I don't want to use a ZSQL method I just want to take advantage of a persistant connection. Wait, I got an idea ... [20 min. later] Hooray! Try this: I have an open ZMySQL Database called 'my_connection'. Now I can query the db from my external method with: self.my_connection._v_database_connection.query('select * from whatever') [another 20 min. later] I benchmarked it agains opening a connection and cursor and then execute() and fetchall(). Using the Zope connection took about 60% of the time the other method took. I wonder if there are any disadvantages??? --Ragnar >I'll look around, but preliminarily, it looks like it has a __call__ >method that can be used to invoke it.
