Greetings, I finally got sick of paging through endless archive messages, so I implimented an expirimental searchable list archive: http://www.zope.org:12080/archives/Catalog/S will present you with a single text search box. This is a very trivial interface, it will be expanded upon. Please try and use this over the next few days and see if it help answer your questions. I used the fsimport script to import the entirety of the pipermail archive, and then cataloged it with the 'Find objects' Catalog tab. In the process, I fixed a silly design flaw that improved the mass indexing speed of catalog by at least 200% and greatly reduced the memory overhead and thrashing. The dataset of documents is 56MB, the total dataset plus indexes is 64MB. Not bad. It took 6 minutes to index the entire dataset with a 10000 word subtransaction threshold and the process footprint grew to 85MB. Catalog has come a long way in terms of speed and memory usage. Further improvements are to parse the documents into rfc822 Messages (probably with a ZClass), index all interesting attributes (date, author, etc), and impliment a simple ZPublisher.Client script that mailman calls to 'push' a message up to the server, instanciate a new message object, and incrimentaly index it in the Catalog. help! zope start failure on linux

hi everybody, i'm running Zope 2 under RedHat Linux 5.2 Every time I start Zope now, I get this error: File "/home/mike/Zope-2.0.1-linux2-x86/z2.py", line 430, in ? logger_object=lg) File "/home/mike/Zope-2.0.1-linux2-x86/ZServer/medusa/http_server.py", line 53 4, in __init__ self.bind ((ip, port)) File "/home/mike/Zope-2.0.1-linux2-x86/ZServer/medusa/asyncore.py", line 205, in bind return self.socket.bind (addr) socket.error: (13, 'Permission denied') I'm not a unix newbie; i've been using unix for years. I know about basic file permission security. I've performed the following commands with no effect: chown nobody.nobody var chown nobody.nobody var/* chmod ago+rwx var chmod ago+rwx var/* I've verified that the var directory itself and all the files contained therein are owned by user nobody and group nobody and that everything is readable, writeable, and executable by user, group and all. I've also tried repeatedly deleting the pid files in the var directory. I've searched the zope(a)zope.org mailing list archives for the last few months. Other people have reported this problem, but some still can't seem to get it working. If anyone could suggest what I'm doing wrong here, please do! So, another solution was given: try a :lines property on the Product to hold the options. Well, this works great for _add and _addForm - but the properties do not show up in the namespace of an 'instanciated object of that Product'. So, when the user goes to edit a created object, there is nothing to use to automagically fill in the dropdown boxes. Thinking about it for a bit, one would think that the following in _add would work: (WARNING, This doesn't work... perhaps someone can tell me why) In MyTestProduct, populate MyFirstOptionList and MySecondOptionList in the Product properties. Here's an exchange I had with a guy in the MS Site Server general Usenet Newsgroup... can anyone find exception with his or my arguments? Additionally, he doubts the ability of Zope to handle large sites (near the end of the message). Any clarifications are appreciated.... I wrote: Thanks for your comments! ASP itself is interpreted (obviously), and isn't the speediest interpreted scripting framework in the world... a recent benchmark of a "hello world" program in ASP/VBScript on IIS pumped out an underwhelming 9.53 req/sec. There are no hard numbers on Zope, but ASP/VBScript is not a particularly well-performing web application development language as compared to PHP or mod_perl or other alternatives. As most of your presentation logic will be placed in ASP, it will be your bottleneck. It won't really matter that your COM logic is fast as hell. Please correct me if I'm misunderstanding the argument. Additionally, not all of Zope is written in Python. Key pieces of it are written in C for speed. And when you say "no paradigm like COM is part of the game", you should also know that Zope is completely object-oriented, whereas the ASP/Site Server combination is a mix of mostly procedural structures with some object oriented components (COM objects) thrown in. Help on ZCatalog

Hi, I have created a ZClass and would like to use a ZCatalog, I have not been able to find any tutorial or an example to make this work. For example, I want to create a ZClass to contain CD objects, as in the tutorial. I now want to build a search screen to find all my Jimmy Buffett CD's. I use ZCatalog for that. I was able to set up a ZCatalog and find the CD instances, but that is as far as I could get, I don't understand how to search for ARTISTNAME = *, or something similar. Thanks, Willie

Hmmmm... As I understand it, when you start Zope's web server frontend (medusa) in an out of the box config, it spawns seven processes (you can see the processes and their owners by doing a ps -aux). The first process will show its owner as the user which you use to start Zope. The other six processes will be owned by the "nobody" user if started as root. If you start Zope as a nonroot user, all of the threads will be owned by that user. I think :). Make sure you have a nobody user defined in /etc/passwd. Alternately, you can change the user that the "nonroot" medusa processes run under by editing the z2.py file in the root Zope installation directory (check for the line UID='nobody' and change it to what you want). Unfortunately, the pain hasn't ended quite yet :) Another workaround alternative to fully qualifying the Product namespace seems to be wrapping all code in the ZCass methods that reference such properties, ie: <SELECT NAME="myselectionname"> <dtml-with "manage_addProduct['MyTestProduct']"> <dtml-in MyOptionList> <OPTION VALUE="<dtml-var sequence-item>"><dtml-var sequence-item></OPTION> </dtml-in> </dtml-with> </SELECT> This works well, and isn't an entirely objectionable approach. Now that I have a working _addForm, the next trick is to get the form fields populated in the created object. The correct place to do this seems to be in _add - where the createInObjectManager is called: <dtml-with "MyTestZClass.createInObjectManager(REQUEST['id'], REQUEST)"> <dtml-comment>  </dtml-comment> </dtml-with> Unfortunately, if you remove the comments, I get a "Error Type: AttributeError", "Error Value: Basic". Mike, Hi... What port are you trying to bind Zope to? 8080? Or one under 1024? And how are you starting Zope? What do you tie the 'lines' property to? The product? Or to another property in a propertysheet within the ZClass? The dtml-return hack doesn't work for the ZClass_addForm method (the object isn't instanciated yet). The next attempt is to try and use properties of the Product.
