XML Document and ID processing
by Rahul Dave 15 Oct '99

Seeing as "id" is crucial to the zope system, and "id" is also used in XML documents to refer to particular tags, there seems to be a long term problem in parsing documents into a zopish DOM tree. Is any plan been made to address this problem, perhaps mapping id to some other letter on parse? Rahul

Help please! (take #2)
by Ian Clarke 15 Oct '99

I posted this earlier but after Phil Harris made a few brave attempts to help which were unsuccessful, responses dried up. I am therefore (somewhat cheekily) reposting it: I have been trying to create a site making use of the dtml-tree tag. To get started I tried to follow the "Inplementing a navigation tree" section of the Zbook tutorials. I entered everything more or less exactly as was printed (I made some changes to the HTML output). Everything seems to display correctly when I initially view the page (a tree of my "Outline" folder is displayed), however whenever I click on any of the sub-folders I get the error to be found at the end of this email. Can anyone give me a pointer as to what is going wrong? Also, on a general point - is there any effort being made to make the error reporting system more newbie friendly? Ian. RE: ZopeTime questions (continued)

If my current object has a property release which > has been set to ZopeTime at the time of creation: Actually I found out that isCurrentDay() does what I want. If I want to check whether object X with a timestamp property "release" has a value that matches today (the date, the month, the year, not hours nor minutes), then I can do: <dtml-if "release.isCurrentDay()"> do my thing... </dtml-if> and it works. Thanks for the help to Martijn and others. Now if I could only do the following (here in dtml-pseudo code)... <dtml-with #current_year_taken_from_ZopeTime#> <dtml-with #current_month_taken_from_ZopeTime#> #do my thing# </dtml-with> </dtml-with> #current_year_taken_from_ZopeTime# needs to be a number/string, e.g. 1999 #current_month_taken_from_ZopeTime# needs to be a number/string, e.g. 10 i.e. I don't want the whole timestamp ZopeTime gives, just year or month ...then I'd be a happy camper :) The following do not work: <dtml-with ZopeTime fmt=year> (fmt is not attribute for with?) <dtml-with <dtml-var ZopeTime fmt=year> > (I didn't think so :) <dtml-call "REQUEST.set('release', ZopeTime fmt=day)> (invalid syntax) I'm starting to figure i need to resort to the DateTime()-method instead of calling the ZopeTime object, but I'm not sure how... Best regards, Samu Mielonen PS I found out an earlier post by Michel Peltier that almost does what I want (it uses the Catalog to do a search). This list is great for begginers like me. Thanks again to everyone.

I have encountered this myself. One method that the ZopeTime object has is toZone. So, I think you could do: <dtml-var "release.toZone(YourTimeZone).strftime('%d.%m.%Y, %H:%M')"> I don't know how this would compare to other solutions from an efficiency standpoint... Kevin

Well, it may be "proprietary", but it is Open Source (IOW, it would be no more "proprietary" than Zope itself). I don't know too much about the MS api stuff - but you're correct that there's no reason better UI couldn't be accomplished with both. Our focus is mainly on Moz due to the Open Source factor. > With a web browser installation rate at approximately 70-30 > it's impossible to ignore Microsoft, where one likes it or not. Well, you certainly can't ignore if from the standpoint of making your Zope-created apps compatible with it. From the standpoint of making a better next-gen Zope management and app development interface though, IMHO browser marketshare or mindshare are not really that important. We have a cross-browser mgmt interface now. What we want to get to is to have something better and more powerful as an alternative. If using the more powerful interface requires using a particular tool (no matter what it turns out to be), then our sense is that that is a reasonable trade off. Realistically, the core goal is a better UI, so any decisions like that will have to be based on merit and compatibility with Zope's business and technical goals, not market share. And as always, Zope is Open Source, so anyone who felt that we backed the wrong horse could always "correct" the situation :) Brian Lloyd brian(a)digicool.com Software Engineer 540.371.6909 Digital Creations http://www.digicool.com

Has anyone information about Zope versus other application servers/content managers. With much interest I've read the postings about the Zope/Vignette comparisons In particular I'm interesting in Zope versus IPS (see: futuretense.com) Martin

Zope.org suggestion: Download shortcut on Product page
by flight＠mathi.uni-heidelberg.de 15 Oct '99

Just two minor suggestions regarding the Zope.org user experience: - On the Products page, the items should be sorted by date - It would be nice if there was a shortcut to directly download the distribution file, on the Products overview page as well as on the individual Software Product pages. Currently, if I see on the Products page that there's a new Squishdot version available, I have to load two intermediate pages to actually download it (Software Product page, Product Release page and finally Download). You could e.g. on the Software Product page, link the Version tag to the distribution file. Gregor

Whoops. That's because the __getslice__ method is being called with sys.maxint. I didn't consult the Python language reference on this. Basic public manage access questions
by Jason Cunliffe 15 Oct '99

15 Oct '99

Hello Like most here I am very impressed with Zope - concept, community, scope, potential etc. and am specifying Zope for an upcoming maritime transport e-commerce project. Users & End-users (are there really ever such a group?) may be using our 'smart-map' web site from kjhkh-knows-what machine, fdsf-knows-where. I am concerned about how to prevent access to management screens when someone does not fully quit the web browser after a management session. Either I have missed something so basic about zope permissions, or it has missed my application.context. It seems that if I log-on as zope site manager/developer/contentprovider, and do some priviledged site work, but then walk away from the browser [ even though I have left it on another URL entirely], then the next person can step up to the machine, click 'back', use 'history', or type in www.mysite.com:8080/somefolder/manage - and bingo slide back into my shoes with those powers! ...oops! ouch.. Tell me I am wrong please. If this is true what does anyone recommend? Yes, I can give people beautifully written instructions: DO NOT do 'thisXYZABC'- please_Youvebeenwarned' .. but real-world conditions with people I may never meet, who don't speak English very well, or are using a Kiosk terminal etc are another matter. [not to mention speaking simple webese- or intermediate zope/python not too well] Is there some nice code {Javascipt/Zope} you can think of to check the fact once the browser focus has moved onto another page or something, then I am obliged to re-enter user:password information? Ditto what can I do when a user of the browser has selected the 'remember password' item? Is there a clean way to zope around this?
