Only in the sense that AltaVista and most other search engines uses the text and embedded meta-information on your pages for indexing. By meta-information I mean things like <meta name="keywords" content="sex drugs breast implants obscene nudity"> <meta name="description" content="This is my lovely home page"> and others. How? ZServer + PCGI

I have an existing pcgi setup and want to start using ZServer as well. I just don't how to get them both running. The Zope 2 INSTALL.txt says: * You can use PCGI and an existing web server if you use ZServer. How? Do you: python w_pcgi.py or wo_pcgi.py? start ZServer with what args? The docs are a bit confusing: wo_pcgi == without pcgi ==> ZServer and ODB3 w_pcgi == with pcgi ==> without ZServer (ODB2?) Therefore how to combine ZServer and PCGI? I know ZServer has a PCGI channel. Therefore maybe the above scripts should instead be named w_zserver and wo_zserver, because you can use pcgi in either case? As you can tell, I'm totally confused here. Would someone provide an example? Thanks, Alex Rice

Despite my love of Linux, there are "creature comforts" in MOSXS that simply aren't there on Linux yet. Like a decent diagramming program (Glyphix). Or a decent Entity-Relationship modeller (EOModeler). As that's what I'm doing for a good chunk of my day, MOSXS makes sense. Part of the reason for this escapade with Zope is a) our company is evaluating it for other reasons (we're doing it by imho far more evil methods at present <g>); b) it seemed to suit a need for serving html; c) I was all set to test a Tk version of a little app I'm prototyping only to realize I didn't have the Tk stuff set up on MOSXS. ::sigh:: And of course Gtk, Qt and so on really don't fly because there is no X. Bah. Python was easy to compile statically (as I recall), but when I wanted to use it with Zope I had to make it dynamically linked and there were some gotchas that came up with the way I did it. This was the biggest problem I had to get around (seeing as how I don't know all that much yet about dyld and bundles and frameworks, et al). MacOS X looks like it may be even less cooperative with Python 1.5.2's configuration machinery since it's so new (but this should be fixed by the next release of Python). I need another whopping hard drive so I can have MacOS X Server back on board, as well as good young Darwin. Python and Zope _BOTH_ need to find their way into the Darwin distribution.

Some databases will create a column name (ie, 'a1'), others return something unusable, others won't work at all if you don't use the AS ___. The data type shouldn't be a problem. .jPS

What sort of information? You can have as many SQL statements in a SQL method as you want (seperating them with ), but only one select statement. Some databases (like Sybase) tend to return information on inserts, create tables, etc; others don't. You can follow up an INSERT statement with a SELECT statement in the same SQL method and you should get information back, but (especially where transactional databases are concerned) you might not always get back the record you just inserted (usually what people like to do just after inserting). If you don't need the record back that you just inserted, you can put them into two seperate methods and call them in the same DTML Method/Document::  <UL>  <LI></LI>  </UL> Remember, #call won't insert anything into the generated HTML, so even if it's the type of database that likes to return status tables on inserts, it won't affect the DTML. and when all else fails, experiment :)

wo_pcgi destroys site... :(

If one runs wo_pcgi.py, builds up a web site, and then a few hours later (before the nightly backups) decides to try running it on Apache ... and therefore runs w_pcgi.py in order to generate the CGI script ... then one will find that their site has been destroyed and replaced with a default QuickStart site. Yucky.
