[newbie] I Can't Get Zope to Zope

I recently downloaded Zope to pay with on mkLinux and have yet to actually get it to run. Somewhere along the line, I did determine that I needed to rebuild Python 1.5.2 with threading enabled and got that done, so the Zope installation process went ok. The problem is: When I do ./start, things churn around for a bit, then visibly start to happen- first I get a PROBLEM(100) ZServer computing default hostname message, but then Medusa starts using hostname: localhost (this is just my little lan) and claims 8080, then ftp starts and claims 8021, then PCGI creates a socket. So far I guess we are ok, but then I get: "...ZServer Monitor Server (1.5) started on port 8099" and nothing else like "at Wed Feb 9" etc and things just sit there. When I try to log in to the server at 8080, the browser is "connecting" but eventually times out. FTP doesn't work either. If I do a port scan, it shows an unknown tcp service is on 8021, http is on 8080, and nothing is on 8099. I'd really like to experiment with Zope but haven't gotten anywhere thus far. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

REQUEST and 2.1.4

Since I triggered the hiding of REQUEST in Zope 2.1.4, I thought it would be only fair to describe how you can make it visible again in a more controlled fashion (for those who haven't already done so). Simply make a DTML Method in your root folder called 'DEBUG' (or something similar) containing the line: <dtml-var REQUEST> ...and set its permissions so that only Managers can view it. Zope Debugging

In an effort to figure out why I have broken objects, I've been trying to understand how various parts of Zope work. What I would like to do is simply put some form of write statement in the python code and have information printed to a log file which I could review later. At the present time I'm just trying to figure out where things are happening and I don't want to stop execution. On a related manner, is there a way in Python to print a traceback but continue execution? For example, I might want to get to some point in the program and have a traceback which would help me figure out how I got to that point. Again, I don't want to stop execution. Thanks. James W. creating cross-product classes

Hi! So, this MUST be simple to solve, but alas, I just can not figure it out: I have produced a product with some zclasse in it. Now, I want to use one or two of those classes within a new product by creating them using a constructor call of a new object. So, to make this clear, this is it: upProduct | class A | class B newProduct | class Z | class_Z_add (DTML-constructor method) | <dtml-comment> We add the new object by calling the class in a with tag. Not only does this get the thing added, it adds the new thing's attributes to the DTML name space, so we can call methods to initialize the object. Imagine Z is a folder and I want to initialliy create some objects within (probably from other products) <dtml-call "b_add(_.None, _ )"> that does not do the trick (obviously). Then I found a hint (http://www.zope.org/Members/tazzzzz/addZClasses) which gave a hint on this: <quote> If you are trying to add a ZClass instance from elsewhere in the ZODB, it's just a couple of lines more that are necessary: <dtml-with "manage_addProduct['YourProduct']"> <dtml-call "YourZClass_add(_.None, _, NoRedir=1)"> </dtml-with> </quote> This raised an Attribute Error ( _u ??<- what is this)) So, how do I do this? Please direct your questions to the Zope mailing list so that others can benefit from the discussion. But not everyone can process HTML in their mail; so better to send plain text. Python Methods are like External Methods in that they are both written in pure Python. Python Methods are not like External Methods in that the Python Methods are restricted as to the Python modules and constructs that can be employed. The only constructs permitted are those that are "safe" for storing in the Zope database. External Methods, because they reside in the file system are subject to the stronger security of the operating system, therefore they are permitted to use all Python constructs. absolute urls

Hi everyone! In the robots and spiders tip it says: "... but its probably better to specify absolute URLs." I wonder if there is a way in zope to specify absolute urls but still be able to transfer a whole branch of the website using copy/cut and paste without messing up the links. Anybody done that? DTML Container?

Hello, I think you can also render the body with: <dtml-var "_.render(this())">. I know this looks kludgy, but it worked for me and you don't need to handle an external method.
