ZPT and Python/Zope specific methods

Zopatistas, I have been working with TAL, TALES, and METAL over the last few days - and I thought I was kind of "getting it." However, I've hit a small snag. Is there a way via TAL to get to many of the Zope methods I use all the time in DTML? like ZopeTime() or bobobase_modification_time? I have read the 1.0 specifications, but I'm not clear how those methods are mapped to the "path based" way of accessing objects and methods in ZPT. Is there an object (i.e. "root") that let's me access these methods? This all started when I decided to add a last modified field in the footer of my pages with TAL: <p tal:content="here/ZopeTime">Replace this text</p> Some methods work, while others do not. Is there any documentation I can reference which describes specifically what I can call from TAL/TALES/METAL? Overall, I would say ZPT is a *great* thing. If all goes well, this will lift Zope out of the WYSIWYG client integration issues that plague *all* of the other closed source CMS solutions. Zope is, imho, superior to the CMS's I have researched in it's clean object->URL translation alone (you should see some of the unintelligable URL's Vignette produces). Furthermore, I'm not sure how many out there have tried to write Web Applications in TCL or ASP, but Python is a breath of fresh air when it comes to coding. If ZPT delivers on it's presentation layer promise (which I believe it will), then world domination is surely not far behind. ;-) Congrats to the ZPT team for this breakthrough techology! Hehe, Me 2. I think the problem is that many answers could be found *today* with the investment of 5 minutes searching on zope.org or at the searchable mailing lists at NIP (thanks NIP!). My impression is that the "fast path" is mostly taken by zope beginners, and not people who prefer to lure mailing lists for some time to get an impression about the knowledge level which is covered by that list. It also would be sometimes impossible to find out the right list to post if the topics would be too fine grained (trivial example "Problems calling ZSQL-methods with parameters") - i.e. if I am a newbie I'm probably not able to figure out what problem domain I am really chewing on. And perhaps I would be resistant to think that something that held me up for three days is really a *newbie* problem ;->. My personal feeling is that if there is a decision for a split it should be zope(a)zope.org The general list for Zope users - operation of and content management with Zope, including basic dtml programming and so forth. zope-dev(a)zope.org A separate list for Zope developers, focusing more advanced aspects of zope programming like ZClasses and pythons scripts and external methods (...). zope-core-dev(a)zope.org Focusing on Zope's innards and continuing evolution. The second and third name may be changed, but I feel that being a beginner with zope in many cases also means not being able to know where to ask, thus heading under the zope(a)zope.org umbrella. Perhaps the help which can be found online today should be more exposed, for instance by linking to the searchable archives (even) more prominently and explicitly stating that they are a very useful resource (they answer 9 out of 10 questions I normally have and I mostly consult them before looking for howtos). That way the more advanced zopistas wouldn't be to bothered to churn out answers to FAQs, and people like me could also get their piece of the philanthropy cake. cheers, oliver

MySQL troubles

I am using MySQL 3.23 on Mandrake 7.2, installed via RPM's but including the MySQL-devel RPM. Aso Python 1.52 I am trying to get ZMySQLDA working with MySQL-python. I have tried MySQL-python-0.3.0 and 0.3.5 Zope reports "Broken ZMySQLDA" in the Control Panel/Products and when I run python db.py form the ZMySQLDA directory (at command line), I get :- Traceback (innermost last): File "db.py", line 91, in ? from Shared.DC.ZRDB.TM import TM ImportError: No module named Shared.DC.ZRDB.TM I am lost as to what I try next or how I debug this or what to do next. Organizing resources (was: Forking the Mailing List)

All, in the recent posts about forking the mailing list, several have suggested that it would make more sense (or that it would _also_ make sense) to make the informational resources accumulated on the list and elsewhere more accessible. Just some thoughts on this, although I certainly have no overall concept in mind that would do: - I firmly believe that with a well-accessible and organized pool of pre- answered questions the load on the list would dramatically reduce. While it is true that much of what is asked here by newbies (including me) could be answered by reading documentation, it still seems that there is a set of commonn questions and problems that remain for many. I am sure many others do not bother to subscribe to the list and ask, so it would not only be a favor to the list, but also to many other users to set up a, well, it should be no more than a well-organized FAQ. - The HowTos on zope.org are often very helpful. Yet, with about 150 of them to be searched and many of them available in all HowTo sections, it is often not easy to find the appropriate one. A system that allows other users to voice a 'helped', 'didn't help' or 'Wrong HowTo' (I think I've seen this at the Microsoft website?) would probably help to bring the really good HowTos to the people. - There are probably better systems for that, and most likely the current zope.org HowTos will not be able to cover that. error messages.

hi folks, i am trying to track down the source of something that's going wrong. problem is the log-in simply returns the start screen, but looking at the Z2.log tail, i see a set of 404 errors, with, what i hope is an error number. problem is, i don't know where to find out what the error number means. in my log i see something similar to 404 2106 404 2109 the 2106 and 2109 repeat, but i cannot find anything that explains how to interpret them. there are other entries in the log file that show 200's, which, according to the httpd specs means OK. any pointers would be greatly appreciated. ciao! greg. Debian zope2.1.6-7 installation, can't login 1st access

Something is very wrong with my copy of the Zope 2.1.6-7 Debian pkg. I can't seem to get it to do anyhing. http access is messed. when I type $ lynx http://localhost:9673/ I do not get the Welcome to Zope screen I get a password prompt which doesn't accept my Super/Emergency/Administrator/accessfile username & password. repeated attempts get a 401 error screen, which says I am unathorized I have tried all the suggestions in the /usr/share/doc/zope/README.Debian.gz (All the archived messages I've run across reiterate these changes I've already tried.) $ /usr/sbin/zopectl stop $ /usr/sbin/zope-zpasswd username: superuser password: admin123 encoding: SHA domains: $ chown -R www-data.www-data /var/lib/zope/* $ /usr/sbin/zopectl start Starting Zope . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . done. #but it still doesn't give me the welcome screen and demands name/passwd $ lynx http://localhost:9673/ unable to access without authorization --retrying username: superuser password: admin123 denied 401 errorscreen Unauthorized -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- boring newbie's details of machine's setup follow -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Started with a virgin Debian Installation: powermac 7200 (ppc601/75) Format HD and install Base System CD- binary-powerpc-1.iso 08-Dec-2000 default stable archive Installer prompts for additional software, from the SimpleTaskInstaller I chose Newbie Help and Finished the install. (this is the cleanest install I've figured out as a newbie) login as root Modify sources.list point to debian.org site $ apt-get update $ apt-get -u install python-base finishes successfully $ apt-get -u install zope works away then... gives me message about changes to ports, etc then prompts for username & password. and starts up Zope successfully. At least that's what it thinks $ lynx http://localhost:9673 should at least give me the welcomescreen. but I get - cannot access without authorization I immediately stop zope with /usr/sbin/zopectl stop and then make changes suggested in README.Debian.gz as mentioned above.

Date:-header with sendmail tag

Today I recognized that the sendmail tag doesn't generate required Date:-headers. As a workaround I use the mess822 package from Daniel J. Bernstein. I wrote a short article about that: http://www.lightwerk.com/zope/sendmail_dateheader Comments are welcome. Regards, Frank
