q: How should I get a guaranteed unique id in Zope?

I just discovered Zope a couple of weeks ago, and have started migrating a cgi based web application that I was writing in straight python to Zope both as a learning exercise and to take advantage of Zope's feature set. My problem is, I have several sql tables that I'm storing data in that I need to be able to have the same jobid in because I'm using the jobid to match which comments are attached to which jobs. When I was using cgis, this was easy - I made a class that wrapped the following function def makeID(self): idstring = "%s-%s.%s-%s" % (self.prefix, os.getpid(), time.time(), self.counter) self.counter = self.counter + 1 return idstring and I could be guaranteed their uniqueness because prefix was the hostname of the server the cgi was running on, and the combination of the other 3 parts was unique per call to makeID. Now that I'm using Zope, the pid isn't unique any more, of course. I don't want to store a counter in the database, because from some of the postings I saw in the last few days here I think it'll cause my db to grow for no reason as it stores unwanted undo information. I also haven't figured out how to lock an object while I update properties yet. I don't want to use an external file either, because the constant locking & unlocking seems likely to cause performance problems eventually. I have both _The Zope Book_ and _Zope Web Application Development and Content Management_ , and haven't found an answer to my problem in either book as yet. Python Script woes

G'day, I'm trying to develope some Python scripts to help me out with a website. Actually, I'm trying to do it on two sites, but if I get it sorted out on the harder one, the other should be a cinch. Anyway, on this site I have a number of form fields that I want to insert into a Postgres table. Now, unfortunately, because I'm adding to existing functionality I can't use the form's standard GET or POST functions to produce some form items for my Z SQL Method. I have used a self.location=URL for an onClick property on a SAVE ORDER button to post the values to another page. The only problem with this method is that redirecting the user back to the main page requires them to sit through the load process again (the page, pull-down lists, etc. are all pre-loaded). So, I want to make the onClick property of the SAVE ORDER button call an external Python script that will insert the data. The problem I'm facing is how to do this and how to write the python script. Basically, the values for the parameters will be: cust_id (obtained from <dtml-call "REQUEST.set('cust_id', AUTHENTICATED_USER.getUserName())">) order_body (obtained from document.customer_form.Order.value) email_address (obtained from document.customer_form.email_address.value) cust_order_no (obtained from document.customer_form.order_number.value) How would I call the python script? A python script I wrote contained one line: data=context.db_customer.method_test("insert into saved_orders values ('" + cust_id + "','" + order_body + "','" + email_address + "','" + cust_order_no + "')") db_customer is the Pygresql DB connector. This inserts the data, but hangs while testing. I was unsuccessful in my attempts to call it from the onClick property. I'm am positive I've missed something, and my hours of searching on the web have netted no working results. So, what I am trying to find out is one of the following: 1) Can you do a straight insert via Python. If so, whats the proper syntax 2) Would it be better to call the original Z SQL Method from Python? Is this possible? 3) Am I looking at this from the wrong direction? Any help greatly appreciated. Ran out of Zen: Multiple inheritance and __init__ problems

Sometimes when I inherit from multiple classes, I can do thusly: class C( A, B): def __init__(self, foo): A.__init__(self, foo) B.__init__(self) But sometimes this doesn't work, but python complains and sais that unbound methods must be called with class instance 1st argument, although that is exactly what I do. Sometimes I can do this to solve that problem: def __init__(self, foo): A.__init__(self, foo) C.inheritedAttribute(__init__)(self) And sometimes not even that works. And yes, I do restart the server without anything changing. Could somebody please try to make some kind of explanation of what is going on and why? I don't understand this problem at all. Is there some known caveats with these methods?

Searching date ranges on catalogs.

I just wondering if you can do it with ZCatalogs. I have a product wich I called reserve and it has two fields: startDate and endDate (both field Indexes). The entry of my python script is a date (let's say currentDate). I just need to do search the objects wich satisfy the following condition: startDate<=currentDate<=endDate. zope services...

I've been running Zope for quite a while now, for a site that I 'inherited' when a guy from work left last year. The HTTP port was always 9080, and I never experienced any problems. I recently ran into problems with the site (see "[ZOPE] problems with NT services" which appears to have been posted by Andy McKay on my behalf) on advice from a couple of people, I've tried re-installing Zope in a different folder and copying the "Data.fs" file into the installation. however, since I have another Zope Service running on the default (8080) port, I cant access the problem site, and cant turn off the working site for other reasons. basically, the question is 'how do I change the HTTP port on the server, so that I can run two Zope Services (at the moment, I have a path of "http://[servername]:8080" for both installations]? also, if the reinstallation and copying of Data.fs doesn't work (or if someone out there knows a better way of fixing' the problem) is there anything else I can do to get rid of the 'Error 2140: an internal windows NT error has occurred' message that I get when I try to start the old service on port 9080? any assistance would be greatly appreciated regards Chris Cully

Hi, I'm a new zope programmer. I created a page which show different products (from a oracle database) which can be selected (products are shoiwn in checkbox format). As I have a lot of product I also manage button ('Next' and 'previous') The proble is : When I select some products from on page and then I use the button 'next' or 'pervious I lose the selected product of the last page.. Is someone can help me and give me some solution ?? Thanks for your help

Product unable to be called

A coworker and I developed a product for our customers handling minimal content management, and the mangement side works pretty flawlessly. We can add new content items, edit them, etc. But now, when we go to publish them, I'm getting errors about __call__ not being found. We used the Boring Product tutorial as our guide, and it never mentions making a __call__ method in the Product's Class definition, so we never did. How to get all users for a role

Is there a method that returns all users having a given set of roles? I know how to get all users and how to ask them for their roles. But not how to do it the other way round. Thanks for your time Robert
