has anyone written an evaluation of the dreamweaver / asp / php / flash approach compared with the zope approach ? I don't know much about it myself I'm looking for something to find out more more myself and to show to colleagues who unthinkingly are going down the commercial path looking for something analytical and substantial that would stand up to scrutiny and help me identify the key issues ie. separation of presentation from logic but going into it, not just stating it meanwhile, I'll keep learning zope and python, which I'm enjoying btw thanks! - Bill Kerr ps,. here's an extract from the mail that prompted this question prices are educational (I'm a school teacher) pps. Hello Allen, We have two tiny utility python scripts we use all the time. toList() is used in cases where we don't know whether we will be getting back a list or a string, but we always want a list for processing. toList(parField) if same_type(parField, []): return parField else: return [parField] and we also created isList() which is usefull for testing. isList(parField) if same_type(parField, []): return 1 else: return 0 We can use both of them in python scripts or dtml. We've found that they make the code more readable and are quite handy. So then is there ANY way to definitively determine that something is a list or not? You are correct in how the hidden fields were set up. In your example, what if 'br' comes in as a single...not a list? Won't the dtml-in throw an error if it's not a list?? My thought was to try this (semi-pseudo code): <if br> <if string.find(br,'[')> //then it's a list <in br> type=hidden name=sequence-item </in> <else> // not a list but a single type=hidden name=br </if> </if> Won't using the string.find expose the list so the dtml-in won't blow up? Strange errormessages while packing the Database

The Data.fs was about 1.3 GBytes(!) big and is now 512MByte. We had a disc space problem, and the server was not able to do the nightly packings (cronjob) for several days (couldn't write Data.fs.old). This is the reason why Data.fs was so big. Thank you very much Igor, however I am still a bit afraid because I see a scrolling window for the products contrained by the BTreeFolder on the product homepage (http://www.zope.org/Members/hathawsh/BTreeFolder) In the exmple given (4096 items), it could still be OK, but I think having 1,000,000 + objects might be a problem. There is an interface problem here : the contents of such a folder can only be reasonably displayed in successive batches. Populating a "huge" ZODB

Hi everybody, How would you populate a "huge" ZODB with hundreds of thousands of objects which have no specific reason to be hierarchically distributed in a complex tree of folders and sub-folders? They could in fact all be in the same folder. It seems to be OK for hundreds of objects, but afterwards there is an incremental cost : each time you add a new object, there is a check on the existence of an identical ID before adding/creating it. When you reach the level of already existing thousands/tens of thousands/hundreds of thousands objects in the same folder it seems you are in serious trouble... I know the question is a bit naive, and that usually you have a data structure which dictates a naturally "hierarchy" of folders which means that no folder would contain maybe more than a few hundred objects or sub-folders. Maybe I should "artificially" design an ID structure which would correspond to a hierarchy : for instance ojects would be identified by numbers with 7 digits, each digit corresponding to a lower level in the hierarchy? It means that an object with ID 2343789 would be placed in the "/2/3/4/3/7/8/9" sub-folder. What do you think? Any other idea? accessing custom properties of file objects

I've been following the Zopebook and I'm trying to customize the file library. I have divided the files up into sections by adding a section property to each file. Here's a portion of the code: <div tal:condition="python:item.section == 'c'" tal:omit-tag> <td> <a href="http://sample" tal:attributes="href item/getId" tal:content="item/getId">File_link</a> </td> <td tal:content="item/file_size">Type</td> <td tal:content="item/title">Description</td> <td tal:content="item/date_mod" align="center">Last modified</td> </div> What's really strange is that this works: <div tal:condition="python:item.title == 'an_actual_file.zpt'" tal:omit-tag> I've found some links on "pre-condition" but from what I've read (http://www.zope.org/Members/dgeorgieff/howto_precondition) this seems to apply to dtml. Does anyone know how to set up dtml docs or methods to headers and footers form a document. example: http://zopeserver:8080/OPS/content/testNewsItem9/testNewsItem9?pp=1 I have the code but can't figure out how to set it up I found javascript that will print the page (http://www.hypergurl.com/printpage.html) but that didn't meet needs. adding "?pp=1" to the end of a URL doesn't give results like I see on http://www.zope.org/Members/NIP/ZMailIn/CMFMailIn_available?pp=1 Any help greatly appreciated Eric Dunn
