python: file size screw up????

Hi, I am creating a zip file on the fly on the local file system and sending it back to the browser via an external method. This the following that I do for that (thanks to Jan and Chris M.): zip_size = stat(zip_file_name+'.zip')[ST_SIZE] zip_file = open(zip_file_name+'.zip') zip_data = zip_file.read() zip_file.close() REQUEST.RESPONSE.setStatus('OK') REQUEST.RESPONSE.setHeader('Content-Type','application/zip') REQUEST.RESPONSE.setHeader('Content-Length',zip_size) REQUEST.RESPONSE.setHeader('Content-Disposition','inline; filename='+project_name+'.zip') return zip_data Everything works perfectly .... EXCEPT : the file size, when I look up up the properties of the downloaded file, it says its 595 bytes in size but size on disk is 4K (which is correct)... Of course since the file size is screwed up my zip utility goes nuts!!! After some minor tinkering I found that... the stat.ST_SIZE is not the same as len(zip_file.read()) stat.ST_SIZE = 4k (correct) len(zip_file.read()) = 595 b (why ... oh why...) what is going on here?? shouldnt they be the same?? any pointers .... anybody?? a modified shopping cart in dtml

Hello group, Long time listener, first time caller. I'm having trouble getting the functionality out of Zope that I want to. Most of my problems boil down to how and when to call objects. Here it goes: I want to make an page much like the shopping cart example in that all actions take place on the same page while using session variables. (1) First the user searches for an item via a python script, and it returns all of the matches with the soundex algorithm. (2) It takes that variable, plugs it into a SQL call. SQL returns say a few items and from that (3) the user selects one. (4) The user then selects a value for that item, it gets put into the "shopping cart" and (5) the process is repeated. (6) Once the user is done they move onto the next page. Confused yet? :-) So my first problem dealt with getting a dtml-document to return to the same page. I finally got this to work with return container.index_dtml(context). I was missing context for the longest time and the dtml couldn't find any variables. Is this the right way to do it? How do I retrieve a session variable in the command <dtml-var something.something>? How do I retrieve a session variable from the name space so that I can plug it into a SQL command in the index_html document itself after the form returns? I tried to do it through python but it returned a pointer to that object. It came from the example in the Zope Book. I tried to model most of this after the shopping cart example but I didn't like the syntax of page templates. Is dtml generally better than pages in templates? Or vice versa? WYSIWYG editing isn't important to me some I'm learning towards dmtl. Here's a last random question: Is the login for Zope management interface encrypted? I can't comment on "maximum # of objects in ZODB" specifically, but I have recently been playing around with ZCatalog indexing. I now have a catalog indexing 700,000 documents (although the actual documents are in another database - not in the ZODB). It works okay but can take from 3-30 seconds to return results from a search (depending on the query). ...and yes, my Zope site takes a little while to start up (15-20 seconds), presumably because the ZODB (catalog) is around 950MB. I quite agree with Max M. Rather than bloating the ZODB with simple records I'm now looking at using a separate database server for indexing. You need to find the right mix of ZODB and relational databases (probably on different servers) to get the "best of both worlds". Hi Evan, Thanks for your reply. The VHM sollution works for me. I used the SiteRoot because the only documentation I could find on using Apache and Zserver with SSL suggested SiteRoot. I agree with the comments that SiteRoot can be tricky to use, so with the same functionality I prefer VHM. Perhaps, when I've finished the project I'm working on, I should write some howto's to help others to find some sollutions easier. But at this moment I haven't got time for it so I'll just post this on the list. To be complete for those who want to do the same thing as I did: Use http://www.zope.org/Members/unfo/apache_zserver_ssl with the following changes: ProxyVia as mentioned in http://www.zope.org/Members/unfo/apache_zserver_ssl corrupts things (pages can't be found) but when using VHM you can find the IP-number of the client in the REQUEST (HTTP_X_FORWARDED_FOR). With SiteRoot you needed a patched ProxyVia to get the hostname of the client. So skip the portion of patching ProxyVia in the apache source and don't include "ProxyVia on" in the httpd.conf of apache. In the Apache VirtualHost section for port 80, replace the ProxyPass and ProxyPassReverse lines with the single line: ProxyPass / http://zope_server:8080/VirtualHostBase/http/www.domain.com:80/site_path/Vir tualHostRoot/ In the Apache VirtualHost section for port 443 (https), replace the ProxyPass and ProxyPassReverse lines with the single line: ProxyPass / http://zope_server:8080/VirtualHostBase/https/www.domain.com:443/site_path/V irtualHostRoot/ And: You can determine whether a particular request uses SSL by checking "REQUEST['URL'].startswith('https')". Hi, My name is Kai wee from Singapore. Currently, my company is using Zope installed in Win200 as a content mangement tools. However, the ZODB is growing and it is going to hit 2GB soon. Is there any alternative ways to counter this problem ?? If I move the Zope to Linux in Window2000, will it support ZODB more them 2GB ?? Please reply. Your help is greatly appreciated. Python product - defaults from filesystem files

Hi, In a python product I'm developing, I'd like to provide the ability to customizetemplates - like CMF skins. I have default page templates in the product as files in the filesystem. When people want to customize, I'd like to read the template from filesystem and make a corresponding instance in ZODB. Is there any elegant way to do this? File System directory view? My initial thinking was to just read the file contents and create the object - but I want to see if there is any already accepted way... This is for a non-CMF site.
