Can't start Zope

Hello, I'm new to this list and have my first question: Zope won't start and I have no idea, what's wrong. May anybody give me a hint? I installed Zope 2.5.1 and 2.5 on Win XP prof. My Python version is 2.2.1 and I never had an older one on this system. I get the same error messages wether I run 2.5.1 start.bat or 2.5 start.bat. YB: Maybe we shouldn't talk about a true way, but about a *preferred* way. DM: But your preferences are not necessary mine and mine even vary with context... I understand your examples and I see your point. DM: I am very happy with the community's democratic nature. I would not like a dictator that decides on whether a product can or can not be on the products list. I agree! DM: But I would welcome [1] an annotation service, where users of a product can comment in such a way that other users learn about their experiences (something like the reader reviews on Amazon.com) And maybe, [2] a preference rank for products in a group may help (something like the purchase rank on Amanzon.com) automatically determined from the number of downloads or derived from some explicit rating. All I've been trying to achieve was to get an improvement on how to retrieve whatever you need for a certain goal. I think the current documentation isn't clear enough in this matter. I _do_ what I'm missing, but, because of my lack of experience, I didn't know (still don't) how it can be solved. While following the postings on the list I have the feeling this also applies to others. Maybe this improvement can be achieved by your [1] and [2] solutions! If others agree: Who'll set it up? (and how?) DM: PS: you could learn to strip your quotings down a bit. I'll try... ;-) Yvon PS: "If others agree" --> Because I think the community should support it to make it use- & succesfull.

NuxUserGroups -- any comments?

Installed NuxUserGroups to test as a possible solution for a client's user-management needs. If you're not familiar with this product, it adds a "group" concept in Zope, so that users can be associated with 0 or more groups. These groups can then have local roles assigned to them. The advantage of this is pretty clear: if I want to give all accountants privileges in the accounting subfolder, I have to either (a) add them as users in accounting/acl_users, which means they may be defined in two places (a pain when it comes to user management, password changes, etc.), or (b) add a local role for each accountant individually, which becomes a pain if the list of accountants changes often, or (c) give all accountants the role "Accountants", which becomes unwieldy if you have more than a few groups. NuxUserGroups allows me to make all the accountants have a normal role (Member, Staff, whatever), and belong to the group Accountants. I can then give the Accoutants group the local role of Manager (or whatever) wherever I want. If Bob moves from Accounting to HR, I just have to switch his groups in the one user folder--not track down his user in several places or change lots of local roles. A very good idea. My concern about using this is that it patches some fairly deep stuff, and I'm anxious that it may not work well with other custom products, future versions of Zope, etc. There's been a little bit of traffic here in the past few months about NuxUserGroups, but none that seems to address these, more basic, questions: What's the current blessed opinion about this? Do you use it? Does it work seamlessly? Would you recommend it? Installation trouble on Solaris 2.6

Hi, I installed Zope-2.5.1-solaris-2.6 on a "SunOS lads01 5.8 Generic_108528-14 sun4u sparc SUNW,Ultra-60" and got the following error when I started Zope. When I tried to import rotor module from bin/python I get the same error. It seems there is no problem to import others lib-dynload modules !?? I also have no problem with an Zope-2.4.1 install on the same machine , I can start Zope and import rotor. Any idea ? It's not terribly pretty, but it works. ie INSERT INTO some_table(some_field) VALUES(<dtml-if form_field><dtml-if "form_field ==''">NULL<dtml-else><dtml-sqlvar form_field type=string></dtml-if><dtml-else>NULL</dtml-if> The first test if to make sure the variable exists and is not None, so if you know it always will exist, you only need to test whether or not the string is empty. You may even have luck with sqltest in an update statement and the optional keyword. Zope and HTTPS

Hi, the site I'm developing will need to run over HTTPS, behind a load balancer, maybe with ZEO, and will need to also serve XML-RPC over HTTPS. Is the best thing to do here to run it behind Apache with mod_ssl, or use the ZServerSSL in M2Crypto? and if with Apache, is Apache 2.0 or 1.3.xx better? TIA Ben Avery YouthNet UK

LDAPUserFolder never authorizes

I've installed LDAPUserFolder to test its suitability for an upcoming project. It seems to install fine, and I can add/update users through its web interface, but I can never get it to authorize a user from the LDAP database. 1. The LDAP installation: OpenLDAP 2.0.25 installed from source onto a Linux box. slapd configuration is: include /usr/local/etc/openldap/schema/core.schema include /usr/local/etc/openldap/schema/cosine.schema include /usr/local/etc/openldap/schema/inetorgperson.schema defaultsearchbase "dc=joelburton,dc=com" pidfile /usr/local/var/slapd.pid argsfile /usr/local/var/slapd.args access to * by anonymous write database ldbm suffix "dc=joelburton,dc=com" rootdn "cn=Manager,dc=joelburton,dc=com" rootpw MY_PASSWORD_IS_HERE directory /usr/local/var/openldap-ldbm index objectClass eq I can succesfully perform searches from the command line. 2. python-ldap & Zope Installed properly, can import it. Python 2.1.3, Zope 2.6.0a1. 3. LDAPUserFolder Installed in Products directory. Not broken, no warnings. In folder /ldap, have an LDAPUserFolder with following config: Server: joelburton.com Not SSL Login Name Attribute: cn RDN Attribute: cn User Base DN: dc=joelburton,dc=com Scope=SUBTREE Group Storage: not in LDAP server LDAP Login DN: cn=Manager,dc=joelburton,dc=com User object classes: top,person Encryption: SHA Default user roles: Anonymous Authentication: Cookie I can view my users, add a user (& check with ldap commandline tools that they were actually added) 4. LDAP data: dn: dc=joelburton, dc=com objectClass: dcObject objectClass: organization o: Example Company dc: joelburton dn: cn=Manager,dc=joelburton,dc=com objectClass: organizationalRole cn: Manager dn: cn=bob,dc=joelburton,dc=com sn: bob givenName: bob cn: bob objectClass: top objectClass: person objectClass: inetorgperson userPassword:: e1NIQX1TQmdhelNLejdhNjhpa1I0YUtmZmZPWXBrZ289 'bob' has been given the Manager role & it appears on the Users tab of the LDAPUserFolder. 5. The problem: When I go to http://server/ldap/manage, and try logging in with user=bob, and his password, it never authenticates. I can log in with my user (located in site's root acl_users, not in LDAPUserFolder). The log (turned onto 9, Debugging) reads: (9) Aug 12 12:30:21: joel not found (getUser) (9) Aug 12 12:30:18: bob not found (getUser) (9) Aug 12 12:30:18: No data in _lookupuser for uid bob Any pointers on where to start would be helpful, as would a LDIF file that I could import w/data that I could use demonstrat that this will work. I'm not very knowledgable about LDAP, so it's possible that I've done something wrong with my LDAP setting -- but LDAP's commandline tools seem to be working fine.
