ANNOUNCE: Pound - reverse proxy and load balancer - v1.3

This is to announce the release of Pound v1.3. Changes in this version: - added support for OpenSSL Engine (crypto hardware) - added support for Subversion WebDAV directives - Pound can now be used to load-balance several Subversion servers - added support for mandatory client certificates (please note that this implies a slight change in the config file syntax - see the HTTPSHeaders section in the man page). - added X-SSL-serial header for SSL connections to show the client certificate serial number (for checking against CRLs). - fixed several code problems (BIO_pending now works reliably). - fixed a problem with multi-threading in OpenSSL - SSL connections should now be more stable. - improved autoconf The software is at version 1.3 (production quality). Further testing (especially under heavy loads), improvements and suggestions are welcome. What is Pound (from the Web page) - a reverse-proxy: it passes requests from client browsers to one or more back-end servers. - a load balancer: it will distribute the requests from the client browsers among several back-end servers, while keeping session information. - an SSL wrapper: Pound will decrypt HTTPS requests from client browsers and pass them as plain HTTP to the back-end browsers. - an HTTP/HTTPS sanitizer: Pound will verify requests for correctness and accept only well-formed ones. - an HTTP/1.1 to 1.0 proxy. - a fail-over-server: should a back-end server fail, Pound will take note of the fact and stop passing requests to it until it recovers. - a request redirector - it will pass client requests to separate groups of servers, based on required URL and the presence or absence of headers (pattern matching) Pound was specifically developed to serve as a front-end for multiple instances of Zope running on top of a common ZEO storage, but can be used with any other web server. A patch for the Python source of z2.py is available as part of the distribution to allow using Pound's SSL capabilities. Pound is currently in use in several medium to large volume sites and seems to be holding up quite well: largest reported site does about 3.5 million requests per day, peaking at over 300 requests per second. The speed is well superior to other, equivalent solutions, the configuration is much simpler and the necessary resources (CPU, RAM, disk) are much, much lower. Pound is distributed under the GPL. Superfast PageTemplates: Call for expertise

I just ran my python product for a spin with the ZopeProfiler (well done Dieter Maurer!). My product uses PageTemplates (mostly through PageTemplateFile) and the PageTemplate stuff really goes at the top of the CPU timing. I.e. the PageTemplate rendering is "slow". DTML is probably not faster and I'm not "blaming" PageTemplates as such because I understand that they have a lot of work to do. My question is: How do I ease off the load on PageTemplate rendering? What in TAL should generally be avoided, if possible, to gain that extra performance? Are there any particular constructions that are "bad" to do with TAL syntax/formatting? (I've heard that METAL is "slow" but they're difficult to avoid because of their great functionality) I have already cheated and pushed some rendering down in the python class which sometimes outputs HTML. I don't mind so much to do that in this case because it's a pretty closed environment one could say. Peter

zope 2.6.1 upgrade broken on RedHat 8.0

Dear whom-concerned, tried upgrading from zope 2.6 to 2.6.1 today, tar zvxf'd the file from http://www.zope.org/Products/Zope/2.6.1/Zope-2.6.x-to-2.6.1-win32-x86.tgz/v… and overrided the existing files as suggested. ZipFOlder - ZIP file too big?

Hi, I use successfully ZipFolder (at full Python + Zope 2.5.1 / Win32) but after few minutes of upload 93MB file Zope says me: Zip file too big and some other errors. Does have somebody know which size is limit for ZipFolder? Many thanks, J. Lukesh

Dropping support that features that a lot of people use is about the best possible way to drive users away from a platform or a vendor. As somebody who uses DTML and python and has invested a lot of effort in a couple of sites, the loss of DTML would utterly persuade me to jump ship to some other more stable approach than Zope. I won't argue the pros and cons of TAL versus DTML except to say that in some ways DTML is more readable and readily comprehensible than TAL for developers with no prior Zope background. Greg

This is well put. I think this argument is also true of designers who don't use WYSIWYG tools as well, for the same reason, I think: round-trip design involves iterations of programmers messing with the behavioral and integration aspects of templates while the designers want to keep changing the design over time. As each of these steps happens, DTML makes the two have to communicate more and correct for missteps more, while ZPT allows for each to operate more independently and still modify the code somewhat independently, without the need to reverse-engineer and reintegrate. This is the case even when the designers use tools like Homesite or a text-editor instead of GoLive or Dreamweaver. Tech staffs have limited resources, and to be required for close technical consultation on each presentation-layer redesign is an unnecessary drain on technical resources. ZPT helps minimize this by minimizing the need for re-integration. For HTML documents, you could do a lot of this using the CMF (content management framework) or Plone (a Zope CMS that uses the CMF). I think this might solve your concern, but you would need to familiarize yourself with the CMF. I would suggest starting with Plone (http://plone.org) Use the CMF and create skin methods using ZPT and METAL macros. METAL is a macro-system in ZPT for the reuse of presentation elements. You use the built-in Document type in a CMFDefault or Plone CMS based on the CMF. Create a custom skin for a CMF site. In a skin folder associated with that skin, create a ZPT called masterNav.html, it will contain code that looks like this: <html metal:define-macro="master"> <body> <table> <tr><td colspan="2"></td></tr> <tr> <td></td> <td> <span metal:define-slot="main">Document goes here</span> </td> </tr> <tr><td colspan="2"></td></tr> </table> </body> </html> Then, create a template in the skin called document_view: <html metal:use-macro="here/masterNav.html/macros/master"> <head> <title tal:content="template/title">The title</title> </head> <body metal:fill-slot="main"> <span tal:replace="here/CookedBody">Document goes here</span> </body> </html> We use this, for example, for a system that uploads press-releases in an HTML format into a Plone Folder via FTP. The default view (equivalent of index_html in CMF) is set up to use the document_view template that we set up in our skin, which means the document is automatically wrapped in a navigation.
