I've downloaded my MySQL DA but Zope can't seem to find MySQL on my system (Zope and MySQL are installed in different directories). Is there someplace I can add a command so that Zope will look outside of its immediate vicinity? Newbie: automatic template?

I am new to Zope. I wonder if this is possible: First create a folder and create a page template using either DTML or ZPT, something like this: <standard header> <standard navigation> Page content <standard footer> 2. page authors upload standard html files to the folder (via ftp or webdav). 3. When viewed from the browser, the template is automatically applied to all uploaded files. If this is possible, how can it be done? Thanks for any pointers. Bin

With practical experience on multi-person teams with tech people and design people with both DTML and ZPT, I can easily say this is just plain wrong. Document structure is best expressed and most portable in XML. There are less unknown factors in XML because the rules are clear. Coding XHTML (or even HTML) in ZPT scales better because there is less magic, and a clearer separation between code and design. I know you can do almost as well in well-written DTML, but this leads to problems in the real world (read: hacks that mess with this separation). Also, ZPT can do non-HTML non-XML content fine, you just need to be careful about whitespace if that matters (as you do in dtml). See Chris W's argument here. It's damn awful to try and have a designer/interface-developer try to redesign a site that has interface code built in DTML. It's especially awful if you are the person that has to give them tech support and pray they do not break the code by changing the presentation. DTML just doesn't scale to non-techies or content people who are talented at HTML, but not 'programming.' It's a much more specialized language (HTML documents *only*), looks *really* obfuscated. Stuffs all its code into HTML attributes which is great for hiding the code away, but awful if you want to see the document structure. DTML and Python work fine together, and are capable of handling the whole range of tasks I need. ZPT+Python cannot. So ZPT is neither necessary nor sufficient. I've moved this to zope(a)zope.org instead of zope-dev... You want ZEO, but you want to run it over a dedicated VPN between your 2 locations, for security purposes. You want to have objects accessable to 2 zopes. And you really can't do this very easily without use of (a) ZEO, or (b) some sort of web-services (lots of work using XML-RPC or something like that). You can't do distributed objects well in Zope with any other way, AFAIK. DBTab only makes sense as a way to mount a ZEO storage, without ZEO it makes no sense. If you can't go the ZEO route, and therefore can't share objects, you need to look into another way to share more raw data between your Zope instances (i.e. XML-RPC, HTTP scraping, Relational Database, etc). If you just need to sync data occasionally, you could also look at ZSyncer. Hi, What is the meta_type for objects that are stored under a Local File System object? Also how do I get the URL of the files stored?(anything like <dtml-var absolute_url> available)? Please help. Regards, Paul.

I think, in theory, you can do ESI in Zope now, you just need to use a patched Squid in front of Zope, use well-formed XHTML with embedded ESI, and set appropriate HTTP headers (Surrogate control header) manually so that ESI is parsed on the client-connection end of Squid. I haven't used this, but I bet this would work. I think the only requirement is well-formed xml for your templates. What future Zope versions would theoretically add is a way to detect esi usage in a ZPT and set the header for you automatically. What you need to keep in mind, though, is the following: - For most html coders, path-based expressions are easier to grasp. The suggestion that DTML support this is actually quite a good idea, but as it is now, it doesn't. - Lower risk: code people have less worry about code being messed with by those that design. - Excessive tagging (dtml-with) for namespace traversal is confusing to non-programmers, who do not understand the intricacies of namespaces. A path is much more natural. - Most HTML developers do not validate their code. ZPT forces well-formed code to be used, and HTML developers not to have bad habits. - ZPT is well-documented for starters, but only if you know where to start looking. I have photocopies of the Dr. Dobbs article by Amos on ZPT (DDJ, Feb. 2002. I have used whiteout to correct one code-snippet typo on p. 69). I'm pretty sure that CMP sells back-issues of DDJ, it's worth geting a copy. Designers new to ZPT can look through this article to get a pretty quick start, IMHO. - ZPT is better for the interaction between coders and designers - both ways. I as a coder need to sometimes put a bit of functionality into a template, but I don't want to break the design. ZPT prevents techies from breaking design work. All these things considered, even if DTML is better for some individuals, ZPT is a better bet for an organization with diverse players and team projects. I tried Zope initially BECAUSE of it's tag based scripting language. I found it very easy to learn, and granted, I have encountered some syntax issues that were a problem for a while, but searching on zope.org and asking for direction from list members, everything has worked out just fine. I constructed 26 virtual sites with Zope and DTML. I have also looked at ZPT and found it rather confusing. I guess maybe it's just the way I'm wired or how I process information, in any case, since we're not all the same, I feel that continuing to offer both solutions would be the most appropriate course. I have never experienced any thing weird in using DTML except for using a dtml-in inside sendmail. Thanks to Dylan, that was easily fixed in a couple of minutes. ZPT and DTML -- the saga continues

If all the excitement around ZPT was channeled into creating decent documentation instead of bashing DTML in this group, that might win more converts. Just to clear up one argument regarding DTML and ZPT. It has been said that you need to learn both. Not true. I developed several applications in DTML exclusively without ever needing to look at ZPT. If this community really wants to get people to use ZPT, efforts to properly document the language by those who are most familiar with it would be the most effective. :-) Kevin
