threading problems in zope

I am at my wits end trying to figure this problem out as it works only in python but doesn't work in zope. Basically, I have a product that starts of a new thread in the init method which performs a long computation and when it's done it updates a value in the main thread. The thread is supposed to run forever as it's in a while loop that sleeps and runs the computation, yet the computation is only performed once. Can anyone shed some light on whether there are problems using Zope with our own threads? I did look at ZODB code, but it didn't help. Following is the relevant code of my product. Let me know why the thread only runs once and not forever. Roles design question

Hi, I'm working on a Zope intranet site involving several Zope products that I have written, like : - Branch, - DocsManager, - NewsManager, - EventsManager A branch is a Folder subclass, and a container for the other "Manager" products. Access rules are quite complex in several cases, but I can define several roles : - webmaster - manager - contributor - visitor My problem is that : - some roles are only defined in the context of a Manager (for example, 'Contributor' or 'Visitor'), - access rights are sometimes defined at the 'Branch' level. Until now, what I did is : - define 'webmaster' and 'manager' in the '__ac_roles__' list of Branch - define 'contributor' and 'visitor' in '__ac_roles__' of Managers. Finally (!!), my questions are : - is this the best way to design and implement my roles ? - can I define permissions at the Branch level (with manage_permission) for roles which are not present in '__ac_roles__' ? Installing Python Packages on Win32

Hello all, I'm attempting to install 1-2 packages using Win32 Python installers. The installers need 1 or more registry settings to be able to identify where Python 2.1 is located. Since these are not automatically installed by Zope, I was hoping to do this manually. Please could someone help me out with this? I'm aware that installing packages generally not recommended for security reasons, but I'd like to be able to do this. IN particular, I'd like to install the PIL package. This information may be available in the mail archives, I just didn't find it on my first preliminary scan. Thanks. Samir

Security: allow manage_changeProperties globally

If "Manage properties" permission is allowed for Anonymous, is it a security breach? In other words, is it possible to put manage_changeProperties in a URL? I tried http://www.somewhere.com/somedocument/manage_changeProperties?title=xxx, it run successfully but title remained intact... I need to increment a document property "number of readers". Is it safer to disable "Manage properties" for Anonymous and to assign Proxy role "Manager" to the method that calls manage_changeProperties and increments number of readers? -- Milos Prudek

I post process the Z2.log file to gather some specialized usage data. I have a few examples of log postings which don't conform to the cgi-standard even though the data either originates from a form (<textarea> typically) or is appended to a redirect action in the usual ?name=value&name=value... form. Values are all passed through quote_plus. The observed effect is the presence of unquoted carriage-returns (well, actually newlines as the local environment is Linux) in the logfile. Can anyone suggest where they are coming from?

Syncing a folder to another Zope server

Hi, I've had a request that files within a folder on our intranet Zope server be mirrored to our extranet. What are recommended solutions for this ? My first thought was to write an external method on the extranet server which does a dynamic FTP 'ls' to the remote server and lists available files to the user, presenting it as a 'folder', and then performing a GET to retrieve a clicked file.
