In other words I need to use this in my thread to get an updated view of the database. Is this correct? RE: [Zope] Credit card authorization with zope
by Bob Corriher 11 Jul '03

Hi Ed, I've used authorize.net with several sites with no problems. I used httplib (with SSL support) in an external method. It's not hard to integrate with at all. I think there is how-to on zope.org that is essentially the same as what I did. It probably would make sense to use a socket timeout if you have heavy traffic, just to make sure you catch any lost transactions. Bob Corriher P-Wave Inc.

Apache 2 : stuck fixing content-length HTTP header
by Gilles Lenfant 11 Jul '03

11 Jul '03

Hi, This is not - strictly speaking - a Zope problem, but perhaps it's a fixed issue for some of you. When using the standard RewriteRule scheme with a VirtualHost monster, Apache 2 removes the "content-length" HTTP header from the response provided by Zope. This does not matter for most web pages, but this disturbs viewing a PDF file with IE (for a reason I don't know). Mozilla (and perhaps other browsers) don't care about this and show the PDF file through the plugin. But most people use IE and I didn't find anything in the Apache 2 doc to fix this. Any hint is welcome, including RTFMs :o) Many thanks in advance. --Gilles

Re: What's the difference about ZopeTime() and DateTime() ?
by Josef Meile 11 Jul '03

> I can use ZopeTime() in Zope 2.5.1 linux version, but > it will give me problem in Zope 2.5.1 win32 version. I > try to use DateTime, but got error message eeither. The difference is that ZopeTime() gives you the time on the server, while DateTime() gives you the time of the client machine. So, if your server is in the USA and you are, let's say in Japan, ZopeTime() will give you the time in the USA while DateTime() will give you the time in Japan. To know exactly your problem, you have to post some tracebacks. Regards, Josef

Sorry, I'm wrong, I tested and it gives me the same time. But I'd swear that before it was like that.

User information
by Robert Jean 11 Jul '03

11 Jul '03

Hello, My application requires users to be associated information such as phone number, address, title... Basically, what I would like to do is extend the default user type. I was wondering what is the best way to achieve this. Should I store additional information in an external table? Or is there a design that lets me store everything in the ZODB? Thanks, Robert __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? SBC Yahoo! DSL - Now only $29.95 per month! http://sbc.yahoo.com

Zope and Threads
by alan runyan 10 Jul '03

10 Jul '03

Hi. Just wanted to post this for whoever searches for Zope, Threads and ZSQLMethods or relational databases in the future. It seems that very simplistic things will work if you spawn a thread inside of Zope. But in the thread if you start doing anything really related to ZODB you could have all sorts of issues. This is my interpretation of events. I could be wrong. I have started smoking again since the beginning of this fiasco. The situation: - need to run a thread that does lots of ZSQLMethod calls and then generates a Report - we would launch a Report thread in Zope - but how it interacted with the database connection was very strange. Connections that were launched with the thread would be reused and would get really bizarre problems. like inserts not showing up, etc. - I spoke with a few gurus and they say that spawning threads in zope works fine (albeit a PITA). but none were doing any ZSQL acrobatics. - postgres connections seemed to leak as would ZODB connections. Eventually I would run out of ZODB threads (which ZServer uses) and ZServer would stop responding because a thread would be left holding the last zodb connection which would have been leaked. - app would lock up. The solution: - use ZEO! (I was already using it) and both kapil and stevea suggested it. But I was DETERMINED to get the threading solution to work (no where did it say it WOULD NOT WORK, now I am writing that it appears NOT TO WORK) - now the ZEO client that takes the report requests simply generate a ReportRequest class, pickles it, put it in a filesystem folder and goes on its marry way. - the report zeo client [separte process] watches the filesystem and picks up pickles, unpickles, generates the report and removes the pickle. so far it works beautifully! I plan to post on zopelabs the threading solution with a huge warning not to use it in conjunction with ZSQLMethods. but I think it should be (actively) discouraged spawning threads inside of ZEO. ~runyaga
