(possible repost. I sent from oerlewein(a)gmx.de but that didn't reach the list!) Hi Tony I saw the report yesterday and read it immediately. It is an EXCELLENT summary of whats been discussed the last year or so! The explanations are VERY understanable and allow for easy catching up on the subject. I'm very glad that the report has been written. At this point (although it's a little late - diddn't know that you were writing up a document) I'd like to offer my time as review partner if there is something more coming on threading. There are some points in the document that I don't quite agree to. I'll adress these as soon as I have time for it (I'll have to do that on my private time). This morning I reconfigured my testcomputer with the infos from the report and I still have the same problem. Could you add the exact compile options for Python and the setup information for Zope? I tried this morning to compile with SUN Forte (cc). Solaris 2.8-sparc, Python 2.1.2: export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/lib/lwp export CC='cc -Xc -mt -lpthread -R /usr/lib/lwp' ./configure --with-threads --without-gcc --with-cxx=CC make make install There were sone errors that came up on the *Splitter* files. There you just have to delete some unimportant comments (or ^M's) and then all goes well. "Recompiled" Zope (2.4.4b1) with python wo_pcgi.py I still have the "single process" thread. I'll have another go with gcc today or tomorrow. I'll post the results. I'll compile with: export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/lib/lwp ./configure --with-threads make make install **** What the decision for or against Zope is concerned I don't quite understand the problem. The question here is Solaris against Linux, FreeBSD,... The Zope yes/no question is something completely different. The chain of argunents used for the decision makers must be clear on that! These TWO subjects only mingle when the company/varsity is fixed on Solaris as only OS. **** Regards Oliver Erlewein

range:min bug in ZCatalogs fo Zope 2.3.2
by Johan Carlsson [Torped] 21 Mar '02

21 Mar '02

Hi, I have encountered a strange problem with ZCatalogs in Zope 2.3.2. We have objects having DateTime arguments effective_date and expiration_date that gets indexed in different ZCatalogs. (The index is a field index). We then tries to get all published objects that have not yet been archived: now=_.DateTime() Service.searchResults( effective_date =now, effective_date_usage='range:max' , expiration_date =now, expiration_date_usage='range:min' ) Now this works fine, until one day when result searchResults returns an empty result list which is not expected. It seems to be that some days the range:min statement doesn't work correctly. (I tried with different range:* combinations and the only thing I found not working is the range:min statement (some days). If I instead use a different value for now: now2 = _.DateTime(now.Date()) # now.Date() returns somethong like "2002/03/21" which in turn makes the now2 equal to the DateTime value "2002/03/21 00:00:000 GMT+1" (GMT+1 is my local TimeZone) Now using now2 in: Service.searchResults( effective_date =now, effective_date_usage='range:max' , expiration_date =now2, expiration_date_usage='range:min' ) will always result in a list (all though it gets quantized to midnight the resulting list will be somewhat biased). What I don't seem to understand is that DateTime() and DateTime(DateTime().Date) gets so different results. Have anyone seen something like this before? Report on Solaris Zope performance available
by Tony McDonald 21 Mar '02

21 Mar '02

As Paul Browning has mentioned this already, I thought I'd chip in. A report on the performance of Zope under Solaris is available at <http://www.zope.org/Members/glpb/solaris> It's written mainly by Matt and Paul - I just helped out with test boxes and proof-reading, so those guys should really get the credit. There's a lot on threading in this report, as well as some thoughts as to how to get around the problems with Solaris, threads, Zope and Python. I'd like to draw your attention to this paragraph in particular; """ The University of Bristol was first exposed to the problem in April 2001. A year on the issue is now threatening the viability of growing number Zope-hosted applications at the institution. Moreover, the problem does nothing by way of reassuring decision-makers that Python offers a serious and practical alternative to the oncoming Java Juggernaut. """ Thoughts? Opinions? Ways forward? Plone local roles feature
by Singh, Kamal Deep 21 Mar '02

21 Mar '02

Hi, I am planning to use Plone along with zope and cmf. I am interested in the ""local roles"" facility provided by plone (visible on there web site www.plone.org) but it seems the current download of plone doesn't has this facility. Any pointers on how to get this feature will be great. Regards Kamal Deep Singh

wanted to poke around www.zope.org, find out what i could find out (i'm new to python, and an old hat at cold fusion), but (for me at least), port 80 keeps timing out tonight ... ironic timing, with me wanting to evaluate zope vs cold fusion, etc. heh. what's been going on? just curious -- Fred Hicks <iago(a)iago.net>

Re: [Zope] Zope on Solaris
by Oliver Erlewein 21 Mar '02

Hi Dieter I know you said it again and again but as long as nobody can say WHY it works on some and not on all boxes the verdict is still the same! Then it's prure luck. I mean if you had a production Solaris box out there and would have to install (e.g.) Solaris 2.9 and not know whether it would work afterwards how would you feel? Knowing, that there is no answer to whats happening anywhere if it goes wrong?! I have two Suns serviced by two different companies with different hardware with different Solaris versions with the SAME problems! That doesn't look good at all for the Solaris-Zope-Python installation. Now if your Solaris works then please solve the puzzle! I know that I can't and that wasn't for lack of trying.
