Core Dump on ./start after system power out
by Gerrie Roos 05 Jun '01

Hello Recently a guy with an pick-axe dug through the mains supply outside our office block. Our server went down cold. After splicing, the server booted up fine. Only now, starting up zope (./start) results in a python core dump : Bad system call. As time is of the essence, I decided to scream for help while I'm trying to fix things myself. I'm about to delete all the .pid files in zopepath/var...can't really imagine it would help...any other bright ideas appreciated. Zope-2.3.0 Python 2.0 FreeBSD 3.5

DTML to search a lines property in a DTML Document?
by complaw＠hal-pc.org 05 Jun '01

Can you, using DTML, search a lines property of a DTML Document to look for a specific string? I have a set of DTML Documents with a custom lines property (called, e.g., "doctrines") and I want to search through the list in the context of a conditional statement in order to filter out the DTML Documents that don't have a specific doctrine in the doctrines property (or list those that do). Has anyone ever done that or something similar? TIA, Ron

sent this once already but forgot the subject line in my message. Sorry for any inconvenience. After all, the form itself is (I suppose) already fixed in its form. >Cheers, Tom P I've already done something like this with a predefined Python Script. I want to achieve the same type of functionality but also have the user be able to define what the content will be. They can choose the number of columns which will return a form with the specified number of text input boxes. Then they enter their info. This is not an exact description but hopefully you get the gist of what I'm trying to do. Also, I just want to see if I can do it. So yes, I can do it with a pre-existing script and in fact am to some degree. The resulting table will get generated from the info input by the user. If a user says they want 6 columns then they get a table with 6 columns and they can add as many rows as they like (There are probably some limitations amount of data a Python tuple can reasonably handle but I'm not so worried about that at this point). Thanks for any assistance, Tom Palermo

The problem went away as strangely as it appeared. All is well (for now). Wish all my problems disappeared like that. Does Squishdot have self-healing logic? Ron

data storage
by jacob walcik 05 Jun '01

i'm currently planning to implement zope to power a large number (200+) of hosted sites. the sites all receive moderate ammounts of traffic, and are currently dispersed across three seperate webservers. we're running into what seems to be a rather significant problem--where do we store the data for the sites? right now it's in an outdated, unstable, and rather unreliable RDBMS (an older version of snap's primebase server). the original plan was to migrate it to MySQL, however since much of the content is (more or less) static, ZODB may be a better option. the docs on zope.org (particularly this one:http://www.zope.org/Members/anthony/sql_vs_ZODB) don't really address some of my concerns, such as, if we have 2GB of data we need to stick in the DB, and the ZODB always stays loaded in memory, what kinds of problems may arise (i envision terrible swapping problems)? is it even reasonable to expect the ZODB to hold that much data? the appeal of using ZODB is that we can use all of the features of zope. projects like berkelystorage seem to be a step towards a middle-ground style solution, but it doesn't look like they've reached a very stable release yet. has anyone else out there run a setup like this? or just a zope implementation with a large ammount of data (zope.org comes to mind)? what kind of solutions where used (hardward or software-wise)? am i just incredibly mistaken when it comes to how zodb stores it's data? -- jacob walcik jwalcik(a)notwithstanding.org

Sharing Database connections and/or methods between Zopes?
by Schmidt, Allen J. 05 Jun '01

05 Jun '01

I have a database accessed with ODBC on one server (win2K) using just HTML tools to get to it with a working application. There are also other Zopes on this server but not connecting to this database. I then have another server, our primary site - in Zope, and I would like to get to the data on the other server. Attempts to just 'point' the ODBC DSN fail. Is there any way to have one Zope's ZSQL methods point to another Zope's ZODBC connection? Or something along those lines? The regular data app will be moved to Zope but the time is not there right now. Looking for a quick fix. Would xml-rpc handle that? One Zope calling another Zope's ZSQL methods?? Thanks Allen

generating Python Scripts on the fly
by Tom Palermo 05 Jun '01

05 Jun '01

Hello fellow Zope users, Have any of you ever used manage_addPythonScript(id, REQUEST=None) to create Python Scripts on the fly. I want to create a Python Script which simply returns a tuple of values from a form filled out by a user. Othe DTML and/or Python scripts would then use this generated Python script to automatically build a table layout in HTML. If anyone has ever used or knows the proper way to use manage_addPythonScript, please let me know. I want to add the script to a folder or possible a ZClass (adding to a folder is sufficient for now). Thanks for any assistance. Tom Palermo

Zope Bug? Exception Handling does not work properly...
by Philipp Robbel 05 Jun '01

05 Jun '01

Hello everybody, I am using the following code (as described in the Zope Tutorial) to handle the BadRequestException which occurs in my example if an image with the same name already exists in the directory. <dtml-try> <dtml-call "manage_addImage(PicName, attached_file.read(), '')"> <dtml-except BadRequestException> An Image with the same name already exists. Please choose a different one. </dtml-try> The problem is that <dtml-except BadRequestException> does not catch the exception. A <dtml-except> does, however, but that's not what I want. It would be very nice if someone could help me on that issue, Thanks in advance, Philipp Robbel
