data point on ease of learning Zope -- I give up.

Hi Zopesters! I'm an experienced Python programmer, and I need to hack together a quick web app that simply accepts POSTed XML data entries from authenticated users, stores the data persistently, and provides a formatted HTML representation of the list of all such entries to the same authenticated user. I thought I would look at using ZODB so that I could have the coolness of nearly transparent persistence. Then I thought I would use Zope so that I wouldn't have to bother with connecting the HTTP transactions to the logic. So I did `apt-get install zope'[1] to download and install the current Debian-packaged version of Zope (v2.2.4), and while I was waiting on the download I went to zope.org. It is now about 3 hours later and I have not yet found any "example code" or instructions that shows how to set up a basic web site or how to write Python code that gets executed, CGI-style, in response to an HTTP transaction. I browsed zope.org, the ZDP, and a site called "ZopeNewbies". I looked at the "QuickStart" that came with the zope server, but all I saw was how to edit web pages using DTML. I don't want to have anything to do with DTML (though we use it in my product, Mojo Nation[2], which BTW is probably the second-biggest open source Python app, after Zope), and I don't want to edit any static pages, so I stopped reading the "QuickStart". So now I give up. I'm going to install apache (`apt-get install apache'), and use the Python bsddb module for a simple dict-like database. Even though I wasted about half of my scheduled time on trying to set up a basic Zope server, I'll probably still have my prototype up and running 3 hours from now, when I have a meeting with my co-workers. Regards, Zooko [1] apt-get is the app that implements Debian's package management system. [2] http://mojonation.net/

Hi! I am trying to find a function which determines who an object's owner is. For example, say I want to list all items in a folder like so... Item_Name (owned by User_Name) Can anyone tell me which function to use? Thanks. -- Jérôme Loisel Lévinux: GNU/Linux dans les communautés à Lévis

can't login to Zope!
by Stuart Quimby 01 Mar '01

A newbie problem here. I can't seem to login to Zope no matter what I try. - I've installed Zope 2.3.0-1 and ZServer 2.3.0-1 from rpm's accessible from the Zope.org site on a RH 7.0 machine. - I run /etc/rc.d/init.d/zope start and it starts fine. - I open Mozilla to :8080 and the Zope start screen displays. - Tried pointing the browser to :8080/manage and it asks for username/passwd. - I supply admin and 123 and no go. No error message just keeps asking for the password again. - Cruise the docs and mail list archives. - Run python zpasswd.py inituser and reset the password. (This was suggested on the mail lists - I couldn't find it in the docs.) - Verify that the inituser file was changed. - Close all browser windows. - Run /etc/rc.d/init.d/zope restart. - Open browser and try to log in again. - Same response. - Try running python zpasswd.py access. - Close browsers/restart zope/open browsers - same response - no error messages - just doesn't like the usernames and passwords I'm providing. - Thought maybe it was a 'Mozilla thang'. Tried Netscape. Same response. This is pathetic. I've got 6-7 hours into this just trying to get the management interface up!!! Can anyone point me to how to get this thing running? data point on ease of learning Zope -- I give up

While I probably abuse the list by doing this, if I can't find documentation after an hour of searching, I post a note to this list and they have an answer (like the one Phil just posted). I'm often looking in the wrong places or for the wrong thing. But the point about learning to use Zope is a good one. The "Learn Zope" page should have a channel for newbies and for experienced programmers. If people can find what they want quickly, they may not stick around long enough to see. Also, maybe a more detailed TOC for the Zope Book would help (like in the Postgres documentation). Looking at the Zope Book TOC doesn't really show you where to find the Python/XML bits (though "Advanced Scripting" is a nice clue). I sympathize, Zooko, I too suffer from poor searching capabilities. And there are others out there like us, I am sure. -Don +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ [Zope] data point on ease of learning Zope -- I give up. zooko(a)zooko.com zooko(a)zooko.com Thu, 01 Mar 2001 13:59:00 -0800 Hi Zopesters! xmlrpclib in python scripts
by magnus/Websys＠websys.no 01 Mar '01

01 Mar '01

We've started using XML-RPC with Zope and Java. Works fine, using external methods (Zope is the client). However, it would be neat to be able to use XML- RPC in python scripts. How do I validate a new module (xmlrpclib) for importing into python scripts? Of course, an XML-RPC client product would be even sweeter :-) -Magnus

*not newbie* How do you interact with your RDMS?
by Andrew Williams 01 Mar '01

01 Mar '01

All: If this question is off topic, my apologies: Like many other Zope developers out there, I utilize an RDMS to store frequently changing data, instead of the Zope DB. My question is, how does everyone else interact with their RDMS's? I'm sure that most people (including myself) use the de-facto DTML and SQL Methods for rendering/storing data. Has anyone used pythonscripts, products, ZClasses, etc for RDMS interaction? If so, what do you feel the advantage is? Why did you make the decision not to use DTML/SQL Methods? Did you realize a time savings and/or speed increase? Greater flexibility? Any other advantages/disadvantages of using your method? I realize that it is difficult to make a generalization, so lets make the assumption that we are talking about reasonably large/complex frequently changing data structures being stored in the RDMS. I ask this, so I can satisfy some curiosity, gauge what other Zope developers are doing, and to decide whether I should look at moving away from DTML and use python for a web site I am designing. Thanks for any info... Andrew Williams _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com

Anyone attending the python conference interested in having a BOF on Zope? Areas that aren't in talks and could be of interest include CMF/PTK, ZEO etc... Cheers. -- Andy McKay.

RE: [Zope] Quickstart needs updating!

Perhaps it should instead be offered for download as a .zexp importable file. That would be a workable solution. Not that it's a big deal in this day and age, but I think it's cool that Zope can fit on a floppy. ;) On the flip side, if the book came with Zope, the examples could be *integrated*. That would be cool. -Michel > Troy > > -----Original Message----- > From: Chris McDonough [mailto:chrism@digicool.com] > Sent: Thursday, March 01, 2001 3:06 PM > To: Michel Pelletier; Donald Braman > Cc: zope(a)zope.org; luke(a)seeto.com > Subject: Re: [Zope] Quickstart needs updating! > > > Actually, it's displayed by the root index_html as well. > > I'll ax the old quickstart stuff unless anybody thinks differently. > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Michel Pelletier" <michel(a)digicool.com> > To: "Donald Braman" <donald.braman(a)yale.edu> > Cc: <zope(a)zope.org>; <luke(a)seeto.com> > Sent: Thursday, March 01, 2001 4:41 PM > Subject: Re: [Zope] Quickstart needs updating! > > > > > > There is a new "Zope Quick Start" menu selection in Zope 2.3.
