Announce: Portland Oregon user group meeting

The first meeting of the Portland, Oregon area Python interest group (PORPIGgies?) will be held Tuesday September 7, 1999 from 7:00pm to 9:00pm in the Benjamin Franklin Building, downtown Portland. The inaugural speaker will be Amos Latteier of Digital Creations speaking on "Zope and XML". He'll discuss the Zope application server and it's web object system from the perspective of XML. * DOM interface to standard Zope objects. * Using XSL as an object query language. * The XML Document Zope product, and how it exposes XML data to Zope. * Cataloging XML data. * Where XML and Zope are going. The discussion will cover some basics about Zope's object system, but will focus on its integration with XML. Even if you don't know Zope, if you have some idea of what XML is, you should be OK. The initial goals of the group are to meet the first Tuesday of each month, and have a fairly technically oriented meeting. The meeting format will consist of one or two technical presentations each followed by Q&A. Socialization will be encouraged after the presentations at a local pub. Admission is free. The entrance to the Benjamin Franklin Building is located on the corner of SW 1st Ave and SW Columbia Street in Portland. The building entrance is monitored by a security guard so it is very important that you RSVP so you can be listed at the security desk. I'll be in the lobby to greet visitors before 7:00, after that the guard will check the entrance every 5 to 10 minutes. ANN: Guest Counter 1.1

Guest Counter is a very simple product whose class instances can count the number of "guests" to a web site. It counts users using any kind of ID you want, although it makes most sense to use a user's IP address. Since HTTP is a stateless protocol, visitors cannot be precisely tracked, and so the counter continually times out registered IDs in order to approximate the current bulk of visitors. A simple mechanism for piecing together "graphical" counters using GIFs or whatever you want is also provided. Installation instructions: Unzip/tar in Zope root folder, then restart Zope. The new meta type "Guest Counter" should be now available for adding to folders. (I made a small blooper that meant that each count incurred a transaction in the Zope OFS. Hi, It's a busy time for Zope development. This week Zope 2 beta releases 2, 3, and 4 came out in quick succession. Zope 2 is in a feature freeze and all development effort is focused on finding and fixing bugs. * Zope 2.0 beta 4 was released. WARNING: Zope 2.0b2 considered harmful to ZClasses

Gang, Well, this is unusual, but unfortunately ZClasses seem to be largely broken in beta 2. How this happened we're not sure, and we sat and tried to fix it as quickly as possible, but the problem seems to be quite deep, and not due to any recent single change. What this means is that if you're using ZClasses you shouldn't even *think* about using Zope 2.0b2. This would be a bad idea. To prevent problems, I'll be removing it from the web site. Hello, This week saw the launch of Bruce Perens's Technocrat.net. This is one of the highest profile Zope sites to date. Butch Landingin's Squishdot product for Zope is a big part of what makes the site tick. Way to go Bruce and Butch! Another major thread on the Zope lists this week was e-commerce. Scott Robertson released a credit card processing product for Zope, and there was a lot of discussion about existing Zope e-commerce packages and where to go from here. Finally, activity continues at a fairly intense rate in CVS as preparations for beta two are made. And thanks to David Ascher, you can now easily download snapshots of the Zope development tree. * Bruce Perens's new technology policy site, Technocrat.net made a big splash this week. ANN: ZSybaseDA 1.0.1

Greetings, Here is the official ZSybaseDA. Currently, the ZSybaseDA is a level 2 DA, meaning that it will work with a threaded Zope, but all transactions with all other level 2 DAs are serialized in the transaction manager. The ZSybaseDA REQUIRES Zope 2.0! There are several bug fixes in this DA over the previous one (which we didn't ever release so it doesn't matter much anyway...) A bug in the ctsybasemodule that caused open sybase connections to hang around until the process died is fixed A bug that didn't let you re-open a manually close database connection is fixed. And others. Note that the ctsybase module appears to be orphaned by it's original maintainer, as our attempts to get ahold of him have failed. We will continue to extend and maintain his work by taking over the ctsybase code until he steps back up or someone else does. Any bug reports or problems with the ctsybase module should be sent to zope-dev(a)zope.org. Note that although ZSybaseDA *is* an officially supported Digital Creations product, *the ctsybase module is **not** supported*. It behooves us to fix bugs in it, but we cannot prioritize it unless a customer opens a ticket with us. Thanks. Please consider the 1.0.1 release of the ZSybaseDA as tested beta code.
