Zwiki 0.54 released

Zwiki 0.54 has been released. This one comes you from the garden, in lovely county Wicklow. Thanks for all bug reports and input. An announcement from Joyful Systems: my current consulting gig is winding down; it's time for me to do something new, creative, financially rewarding. This could mean a greater focus on Zwiki. ZSparklines, a simple sparklines product for Zope

I'm pleased to announce ZSparklines, a simple Zope product to add sparklines to any Zope application. You can find version 0.1 here: http://www.infrae.com/products/zsparklines ZSparklines is basically Joe Gregorio's spark cgi script (1.0.0), where the cgi layer was replaced with a Zope layer, so it can be used as a zope product. It defines two simple views, sparkline_smooth and sparkline_discrete, and an interface, ISparklinedata, which you need to implement in your classes to use the sparkline views on them. If you want to use sparklines for classes you have no control over, you can write an adapter to implement the interface. Any feedback, questions and suggestions for improvement are more than welcome. ANN: more zope.org wikis moved, zopewiki.org renamed

Zopistas, all wikis that were under http://zope.org/Wikis have now been moved to http://wiki.zope.org . The old wikis have been made read only. 60 wikis were moved. ~500 old dtml methods and ~1500 old wiki help pages were cleaned out. Mail subscriptions still need a little work. Enjoy! You may see some excellent docs you never saw before, I certainly did. I'm sure there's a lot of cleanup opportunities here - jump in. Also, zopewiki.org has been renamed to http://wiki.zope.org/zope2 . The old url was great to use, but the new one will fit better with the new scheme. Old zopewiki urls will redirect. All of these wikis should share cookies, so you only have to set your zwiki options once. All should have similar edit policies - full edit access, username option required. Representation for Zope at PyCon 2007

PyCon 2007 will be held in Addison (Dallas) from Feb 23 to 25, and we're fast approaching the talk submission deadline of Oct 31. I'd like to encourage talks about Zope, particularly "how to get started with Zope" and also the new technologies coming out of Zope 3. Information on both of those topics has been in very short supply at PyCons. We're also approaching the deadline, Nov 15, for half-day tutorials taught on Feb 22. Attendees register separately for these and teachers can earn up to $1500 per half-day, depending upon the number of students. The tutorial format would be ideal for getting someone up to speed on either Zope 2 or Zope 3. Teach a basic intro in the morning and advanced material in the afternoon. And if you're nervous about such a commitment, tutorials are a great opportunity to partner with another teacher or class helper. As a longtime advocate of Zope (both 2 and 3) I'd very much like to see extensive coverage this year of getting started with Zope 3. Zope has a PR problem, partly from the immense power that comes with it, and the difficulty in getting your arms around it all. It evokes strong feelings and has a distinct philosophy and design tradeoff that you have to understand before you're productive. And with the recent formation of the Zope Foundation, putting forth your best image and getting new members into the community should be a priority. PyCon is a significant opportunity for the Zope community to evangelize. In the PyCon's I've attended one challenge is breaking Zope down into teaching chunks that can be taught in 30-40 minutes. It is very easy to leave the audience behind in the buzzwords and concepts of Zope. So please don't try to teach all of Zope + Plone in 30 minutes. ;-) ;-) One possible talk I think would fit, would help someone just getting into Zope 3 and I wish someone would tackle is the Zope 3 component architecture - nothing about the web or databases or security. Start with the abstract concept of interfaces and adapters, as exists in the zope/interface package, and then layer on it the idea of registries, as implemented in the zope/component package. And wrap up with the reasons why interfaces are better than abstract base classes and what kind of problems adapters are good at solving, including some _non-abstract_ examples. Hello. ZInformixDA 0.3 has been released. This is an improved version of an ancient 0.2 version released by Mark Rees a few years ago. It now uses a python database api 2.0 module ( InformixDB ). This version should work with any Zope 2.7.0+ release and is marked as "stable". 10 october 2006 – The ETH World program is pleased to announce the release of the dynamic Learning Content Management System. Developed by the Center for Organizational and Occupational Sciences of ETH Zurich, the dLCMS is a CMS for web based learning materials that supports easy editing and user-friendly compilation of learning content, advanced scalability, and flexible use of materials in various didactic contexts. This is the first public release of a system that has been under development since 2004 and is now in production at ETH Zurich. The release is a beta of dLCMS 1.6 (1.6b1). What is the dLCMS? ------------------ The main goal of the dLCMS is the enhancement of learning content’s reusability through the separation of content and graphical presentation, the consequent use of small, modular learning objects that can easily be rearranged into new learning units, and the collaborative use of learning content by teachers and content designers via the Internet. Complete learning units can be exported as packages compatible with IMS Content Packaging or conformant to SCORM. dLCMS packages have been successfully imported into the learning management systems Moodle, ILIAS, OLAT, and WebCT. Features, architecture, and component model ------------------------------------------- * Learning objects are stored in an XML format in a centralized repository * An online editor enables authors to create content focused on their subject matter without having to care about graphical design, data formats, or programming languages * Graphical style and layout can be defined through the use of a flexible page templating system * The dLCMS is an extension of the open source Silva CMS and uses the Five/Zope3 framework * The dLCMS is open source with a BSD-style licence The dLCMS functional architecture is separated into four primary components: authoring, repository, assembly and linking, and publishing and export. The dLCMS Content Model consists of three component types: assets, content elements, and learning units. Why a dLCMS? ------------ Because of the increasing complexity it has become difficult to develop web based courses direclty with HTML, JavaScript, etc. The aim of the dLCMS is to ease and coordinate this process. A learning content component model defines different levels of learning components, their properties and granularity, and how the components can be aggregated into larger learning units. zope.org DNS issues

Hi there, As you may have noticed zope.org was unreachable today. This was due to a DNS misconfiguration that has now been resolved. Everybody should see zope.org again once the DNS update propagates. Why did this happen? Briefly: we made a mistake, sorry! Now the longer answer: In a small but essential step towards a community-managed zope.org infrastructure, we transferred the DNS control to community members. Unfortunately we made a mistake during this transfer. We've taken steps to make sure multiple community members are now able to fix DNS problems, so hopefully we can call this a teething problem and forget about it now. Our apologies for the inconvenience! We will be taking further steps in improving the zope.org infrastructure in the future. Regards, Martijn
