quintagroup.com - Quintessence of modern business
21 january 2005 - As previously announced, Infrae has released Silva
1.2 beta today. This release contains three major new features:
expanded version management for XML documents, subscription
functionality for all versioned content, and an internationalized
Silva user interface, including Dutch and German translations. Infrae
is actively seeking volunteers to translate Silva into other
languages.
Version management
------------------
Silva 1.2 exposes additional version management capability to the user
interface. It leverages Silva's powerful multi-version system, where
content can be online while a new version is simultaneously prepared.
The version management feature allows:
* reviewing older versions of content objects
* comparing different versions side-by-side
* reverting to older versions of content
* removing of selected old versions
Subscriptions
-------------
Silva 1.2 adds the subscriptions feature, which allows end-users to
subscribe to public web pages. As soon as a new version of a page gets
(re)published, the subscribed user receives an email
notification. It's even possible to subscribe to changes on a content
hierarchy - but only if this has been allowed using the subscription
management UI, which allows for fine-grained subscribability for
content. On the more technical side it is noteworthy that the
subscription feature has been designed to be scalable over many
subscribers.
Internationalization
--------------------
Silva 1.2 has now been fully internationalized. This means that the
Silva user interface can now be presented a wide range of
languages. Besides the original UI in English, Silva 1.2 will also
ship with a German and a Dutch translation. We're eager to have
contributors help with the translation effort to other languages!
If you're interested in providing translations to other languages, or
if you wish to test an existing translation, please contact the Silva
developers at:
http://lists.infrae.com/mailman/listinfo/silva-dev
and we will help you get started.
Upgrading
---------
The upgrade from Silva 1.1 to 1.2 involves a content upgrade, though a
small one. Ghosts need to be reindexed in the catalog, and Indexer
objects need to be refreshed. This can be performanced by a single
content upgrade. For more information see the UPGRADE.txt that will
ship with the release.
What is Silva?
--------------
Silva is an enterprise-class CMS for managing content for the web,
print, and other media. Content is stored in clean and future-proof
XML, independent of layout and presentation. Features include a
multi-version workflow system, XSLT rendering support, integral
WYSIWYG editor (Kupu), content reuse in multiple publications,
sophisticated access management, extensive import/export facilities,
fine-grained templating, and hi-res image storage and manipulation.
Silva is entirely open source.

Announcing TeamSpace: A safe, well lit place for Teams to hang out.
About
TeamSpace is an infrastructure product for developing advanced
groupware
and collaborative applications.
The TeamSpace product introduces the concept of Teams to CMF and Plone.
Teams are analogous to groups, except that membership to a Team is
represented by an Archetypes-based content object, similar to the way
that CMFMember (upon which TeamSpace depends) represents Member
objects. TeamMembership objects are subject to workflow, allowing
memberships to be "active" or not based on the current workflow state.
Additionally, each TeamMembership can have any number of arbitrarily
specified roles within the context of the Team (or any associated
TeamSpaces).
Additionally, TeamMemberships support the concept of Team-associated
schemas/metadata with values on a per membership basis. Put another
way, each Team has the ability to store Team-specific data about each
of the
Team's members, whether or not that member is active on the Team.
As a collaboration mechanism users who have active TeamMemberships
for a Team can use a TeamSpace, which dynamically allocates security
settings
within the TeamSpace based on the security policy specified by the
Team and
the TeamMembership.
The following projects are using TeamSpace in Production:
- EduPlone
- BlackRockCity Extranet
- PloneForge
- MarketBroker

PyCon is not just a conference to hear people present on Python and
Python applications. It's also a place to meet and work with
colleagues from around the world.
Consider the following opportunities for collaboration:
- Sprinting
A sprint is a multi-day session of intense development organized
around extreme programming (XP) ideas such as pair programming.
There will be four days, March 19-22, before the regular conference
to sprint on a variety of projects. To see what sprints are
planned, see:
http://www.python.org/moin/PyConDC2005/Sprints
If you would like to lead a sprint, feel free to add the sprint
to that page. If you want to participate in a sprint, visit
a sprint-topic page and add your name to the list of attendees so
that we know how many people are coming.
If you have a question about the sprints, feel free to drop me
a line.
- Open Space
Open space is a part of PyCon designed to provide opportunities for
collaboration. There are two kinds of open space at Pycon, quiet
and noisy. There will be a quiet room provided throughout the
conference for people to access the network and to quietly hack with
others (e.g. pair program).
There will also be noisy rooms for people to have discussions or
give informal presentations. The noisy rooms will host up to two
presentations or discussions at a time. We'll provide the
opportunity to sign up for 30-minute time slots. We'll allow sign
up for half of the time slots before the conference. There will
be a posted schedule with spaces to sign up for the remainder of
the time slots during the conference.
I'll provide more information on the open space schedule soon,
after we finalize the rest of the conference schedule.
