Do you like * buttons containing images (and do not yet want to use the HTML 4.0 "button" tag) and * Zope's ":method" magic for buttons? The you may find the following patch interesting: URL:http://www.dieter.handshake.de/pyprojects/zope/imgbutton.pat With the current Zope, you can not use ":method" with "<input type=image>" tags, i.e. the HTML 3.2 image buttons. The browser creates for such an image button two form variables "<name>.x" and "<name>.y". These suffixes (".x" and ".y") prevent Zope to recognize any type suffix, especially ":method". The patch above extends Zope's ":method" suffix handling for the case of image buttons. It defines for them the form variable "imgclickpos", a record with the 2 integer fields "x" and "y", and calls the method as it does for normal submit buttons. The patch defines a new ":last" suffix, too. "<name>:last" tells Zope to discard any value previously seen for "<name>". This should avoid the nasty case to get a single value, if a form contains a field once, but a list if it contains the list several times. "<name>:last" ensures, you always get a single value (and not a list), namely the last one. ":last" is effective only for types that are not SEQUENCE, RECORD nor RECORDS. For ":list" and ":tuple", ":last" is not senseful. For ":record" and ":records", the code was rather complicated, such that I not dared to change it. Dieter

[Patch] ZCatalog for International Latin-1 sites

ZCatalog can already be used easily to catalog material in one non-english language (condition: one byte per character encoding) by using the locale support. This breaks down, however, when a single catalog should index objects in different (non-english) languages. The patch at URL:http://www.dieter.handshake.de/pyprojects/zope/splitter.pat lets ZCatalog treat each character with code between 192 and 254 (inclusive) as letters, provided "Splitter.c" is compiled with "-DINT_LATIN1". This is adequate for ISO-Latin1, because all characters in the range of 192 and 254 are letters (though for different Latin-1 languages) with the exception of 215, 216 and 247. Dieter

[HowTo] ZCatalog Preprocessing

Did you ever want to preprocess DTML methods/documents before indexing them in a ZCatalog? Preprocessing, here, means: render them, filter HTML tags and translate HTML entities, among others. Then have a look at URL:http://www.dieter.handshake.de/pyprojects/zope/CatalogSupport.html It contains something like a HowTo, more precisely a function that can be used as external method to render, strip HTML tags and translate HTML entities during ZCatalog indexing of DTML methods/documents. Before publication of the book, the material will be posted online but will NOT be under an open content license. After the book is completed and has gone to the press, then O'Reilly will release the book under a still to-be-determined open content license. This is good news because that means our material will be available soon! Michel has finished up the HTML and DocBook upload/redering/TOC scripts for the book using StructuredTextNG, the new StructuredText system that works with DOM. A nice side effect of this is that StructuredText now supports DocBook output. Last week was spent expanding on chapter by chapter outlines and moving old material into its new location in the outline. Amos spent last week at the O'Reilly Open Source Convention where he gave some presentations, demos, and hammered out the agreement with the editors on the license issue. This week we will be polishing up the material for public presentation Real Soon Now. Chris McDonough has finished about a quarter of the security chapter of the Product Developer's Guide. Material for the PDG will be released piecemeal as it is completed and thus the security chapter should be available for online perusal Real Soon Now (maybe two more weeks -- sorry folks, doing this on weekends). Last week highlights Most of last week was consumed by OSCON in Monterey. There was a lot of traffic at the Zope booth - many people who knew _of_ Zope and wanted to learn more. There were quite a lot of Perl hackers at the conference, and they were pretty happy to hear that ActiveState (who also had a big presence at OSCON) expects to make an initial alpha of their Perl support for Zope in a matter of weeks. We also talked usability with some of the Zopistas at the conference. Even though our usability BOF was rescheduled to 10 pm, moved to a different building, printed up as the "Zope Visibility" BOF and scheduled opposite a Free Beer bash, around 20 die-hards managed to find Amos Lattier, Paul Everitt and me to talk about improving the Zope usability story. Topics included jargon control, consistency and the difficulty of creating new components whether through ZClasses or as Python based products. We obviously have plenty to do on this front - improving usability will be one of our main goals in the weeks and months to come. The folks at the BOF also gave pretty good reviews to the dev.zope.org site and its potential for improving the situation. In other news, Tom Yager of InfoWorld published a "largely positive review of Zope 2.2 (beta 3)", http://www.infoworld.com/articles/mt/xml/00/07/17/000717mtzope.xml Unfortunately he was using some old or inaccurate information and lists ZEO as an expensive add-on product rather than as Open Source. Hopefully this will be remedied (though there are some who have warned me not to count on it...) This week This week we will be catching up on 2.2 upgrade issues and moving forward with some of proposals on dev.zope.org. I also hope to write up a more in-depth version of the usability issues we talked about at the BOF and try to identify a bite-sized chunk that would be a good candidate for a Fishbowl project. This week: - Flow back some of the work done for the special O'Reilly Open Source convention demo version. - If the XPI bug is fixed this week, get the XPI install to work. Statistics: Two tracker issues related to special work for the O'Reilly conference (which were hidden from view for most people), were closed. Product Updates: ZRTChat and QSurvey

I have updated QSurvey and ZRTChat today Wednesday July 26. They should now work acceptably with zope-2.2. QSurvey writes multi-page surveys with rudimentary branching and stores the survey data in the zodb. ZRTChat is a "real-time" html chat product. I recommend updates of these for anyone using them and zope-2.2+. mod_pcgi2 version 1.1.2 announced stable

The module works perfectly whether installed on root location, on non-root location or on longer location. Editors successfully manage the site, visitors happily view it, no problem with Apache/Zope have been reported for a long while. The site started on Zope 2.1.4, later upgarded to Zope 2.2.0b2, b3, b4; now it runs on Zope 2.2.0. Both ZServer and PCGI-only modes work fine with mod_pcgi2. e-tailer ecommerce product available

Our e-tailer product has been under development for some time and we would now like to officially announce it. e-tailer is a ZODB based Catalog system with shopping cart. A user friendly management interface means that anyone can use it. A new shop can be created via the web in a matter of minutes. It is essentially supposed to be an out of the box solution with some very nice features.
