19 April 2007 - The Zope 3 development team announces the Zope 3.4.0a1 release This release introduces support for binary large objects in the ZODB, provides a new postprocessing hook for publishing results and makes all Zope packages available as Python eggs. Development release and feedback -------------------------------- This is a development release with alpha quality. It is intended for developers to check their applications for compatibility with the new features. This release *is not intended to be used in production environments*. We'd love to hear about any bugs you encounter. Please use our bug tracker, the mailing lists, and the IRC channel to contact us in case you encounter any problems. This alpha release will be succeeded by a beta which is expected to be available by 3rd May 2007. It was rewritten from scratch based on the latest software design patterns and the experiences of Zope 2. The component architecture is the very core of Zope 3 that allows developers to create flexible and powerful web applications. Compatibility with Zope 2 -------------------------- We continue to work on the transition from Zope 2 to Zope 3 by making Zope 2 use more and more of the Zope 3 packages. But we're not there yet. **You can't run Zope 2 applications in Zope 3.** New features and important changes ---------------------------------- - Updated the shipped ZODB to version 3.8 and introduced optimized handling for large files in conjunction with ZODB Blob support. Most Blob operations can be handled with O(1) effort now providing a scalable approach to handling large files. - Introduced IResult hook for postprocessing of publishing results. This replaces a similar private IResult hook from previous releases. It is a hook point into which a variety of interesting policies, including in-Zope pipelining, can be placed. See zope/publisher/httpresults.txt for more details, which itself points to the full details for IResult and IHTTPResponse.setResult in zope/publisher/interfaces/http.py. - zope.app.testing.functional.ZCMLLayer supports in-process tearDown. For backwards compatibility, this feature is disabled by default. You can enable it by passing ``allow_teardown=True`` to ``ZCMLLayer()`` or to ``defineLayer()``. - Removed unused and untested SFTP code from zope.app.twisted along with all the SSH keys. Removed all the SSL keys also. - Added new Decimal field type to zope.schema (and DecimalWidget in zope.app.form) and added security declarations for decimal.Decimal objects - Added new Time field type to zope.schema - Change the publication object to abort the current transaction if the transaction was doomed. [Ann] "analyseObjects": analyse live objects

With ExtensionClass becoming a Python new style class (i.e. with Zope 2.8), Zope's main tool to analyse memory leaks (the "Refcount"s display in "Control_Panel --> Debug information) lost most of its value as it now only reports refcounts for old style classes and acquistion wrappers. Therefore, I developped analyseObjects. It can be used as an "External Method". analyseObjects analyses the objects known to the garbage collector. Usually, these include only objects that can contain links to other objects (such as tuples, lists, dicts, class instances, ...). Therefore, it can not detect all memory leaks (e.g. an old leak losing string objects in the session machinery could not have been detected). Nevertheless, it is a valuable aid. New Sendfile Patch Released

A new version with better Linux support for large files has been released. You can get the latest version here; http://www.zope.org/Members/TheJester/Sendfile%20Patch/ This is a monkey patch, to revert, simply uninstall the Product. There is also a patch (not a monkey patch) for ExternalFile to allow it to use sendfile if available. If you're serving flash, large media like images or music or large javascript libraries out of Zope, this might be of use to you. Background: Sendfile is a system call available on most UNIX(-like) systems that efficiently copies data between two file descriptors. This patch adds a sendfile method to the Zope Response to allow access to it. Due to the fact it requires a file descriptor, it is only available to trusted code, (External Methods, Products). While it's trivial to add a version that allows you to utilise it by passing a filename, this a large security problem out of the box, and so this method is not provided. A writeup of how to create a simple external method to statically serve images from a fixed directory can be found at http://gabbpuy.blogspot.com/2007/03/sendfile-patch-for-zope2.html For a 400K file stored as an Zope Image in the ZODB, I can expect around 30 requests a second to be fulfilled. Silva issues now tracked in Launchpad

3 april 2007 – Infrae is pleased to announce that Silva’s issue tracking is now in Launchpad. This move is part of an effort to enhance collaboration with other components in the software stack. Besides being the home of the GNU/Linux distribution Ubuntu, Launchpad also hosts Zope3 issues, Grok issues, SchoolTool, and has been the development hub of the dLCMS (dynamic Learning Content Management System, developed at ETH Zurich) for the last year. Many Silva users have used Launchpad to translate Silva’s interface languages. Translations are linked with 2,700 other projects on Launchpad, and the website offers suggestions of possible wordings from those projects. This inter-connecting of open source communities is a prime example of the potential of the Launchpad service. Yesterday the Launchpad team announced the release of their 1.0 beta, sporting a redesigned interface and features to link data from a variety of project-specific sources. In the press release was a quote from Infrae: ”Launchpad connects us to our most important communities, and brings synergy to issue tracking for Silva, where problems in one component of the stack affect another up or downstream. Key components of our stack were already there: Infrae’s developers run Ubuntu, we develop with Zope3, and the dLCMS product (which is built on top of Silva) has been using Launchpad for over a year. z3c.rml 0.5 released!

I am very proud to announce the release of z3c.rml version 0.5, an independent implementation of the ReportLab Markup Language (RML). RML is a XML dialect that describes the generation of a PDF using the ReportLab PDF generation library. This release focuses on compatibility with the RML version developed by ReportLab, Inc. In the future, however, the plan is to divert from the original API to fix inconsistencies between the RML Specification and the ReportLab API and to extend beyond the original functionality. Features -------- - Full support of all common RML directives. - Support for merging in pages from external PDF files thanks to pyPdf. - Directives are fully documented using an extension to Zope's interfaces and schemas. - Code-generated DTD file. - Code-generated RML Reference document, of course as PDF built with z3c.rml. - Optional integration of page templates, allowing dynamic RML documents to be created. - Support for charts. - Test suite with 90 files. Roadmap to 1.0 -------------- - Fix inconsistencies between ReportLab and RML APIs. - Finish the documentation of the chart support. - Finish the page insert and merge functionality. - Improve the DTD generator and possibly write a generator for RelaxNG. - Integration of a hyphenation support, if a proper package can be found. Installation ------------ z3c.rml has been uploaded to the Python cheese shop. Thus you should only need to say: easy_install z3c.rml Unfortunately, easy install will not install the ``reportlab`` dependency, since it is not available in the cheese shop. This will have to be done by hand. Also, by default the pagetemplate support is not enabled, because of the many dependencies. However, if you want the pagetemplate support, you can simply install it or install the "zope.pagetemplate" egg.
