Infrae extends Python, Zope, Silva, and Railroad with OAI-PMH facilities

OAI Pack: a full stack of Open Archives services October 14, 2004 – Infrae is pleased to release extensions for Python, Zope and the Silva CMS for harvesting web-based repositories exposed using the OAI-PMH standard (Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting). In addition we are announcing an extension for the Railroad content repository software for exposing existing Railroad systems as OAI-PMH harvestable repositories. The individual components enable organizations to harvest, index and present data from any OAI-PMH repository, and also allow the setting up of a new repository with Railroad. Railroad, Silva and these extensions are open source. The Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting is a well-established standard in the content management and library science worlds gaining in importance. It provides an application-independent interoperability framework for metadata exchange between online parties. Many academic libraries and other organizations expose OAI-PMH compliant repositories to the web that can be harvested. The OAI-PMH standard defines the following parties and software components: * A ‘Data Provider’ such as an academic library runs a Repository that supports OAI-PMH as a means of exposing metadata information about resources, for instance academic publications. * A ‘Service Provider’ uses Harvester software to harvest metadata from such Repositories. The harvested metadata can be used to provide valued-added services, such as a website that allows browsing and searching through a catalog. Infrae has extended Silva so it enables users to browse and search harvested metadata, further enriching the extensive feature set of this open source CMS. An organization that uses Silva can easily become an OAI-PMH Service Provider. In the process, Infrae also developed a module for accessing OAI-PMH compliant repositories in Python, and developed a sophisticated harvesting and indexing system for using harvested metadata in Zope. These reusable components are designed to be building blocks for other Python or Zope-based applications. Infrae has also extended Railroad with a service to turn it into an OAI-PMH compliant server. Railroad is a standards-based content repository for digital media and corresponding metadata. It’s designed to be easy to integrate with content management systems and other client software, and has already been integrated with Silva and Plone. By using Railroad, an organization can easily become an OAI-PMH Data Provider. Infrae calls this full stack of OAI-PMH services the OAI-PMH Pack. It is possible to use a combination of Silva and Railroad to become both Service Provider and Data Provider, but since the OAI Pack builds on an interoperable protocol, the components can also be used individually. announcing catchmail for python and postgres

Hello zope users and developers, I thought you might be interested in a new program: catchmail http://www.users.bigpond.net.au/mysite/catchmail.htm catchmail stores emails in a Postgres database. It does nothing more however. It is a lightweight Python script for parsing and storing email. Perhaps there is scope for catchmail databases being integrated into zope apps. Feedback valued. We didn't release earlier as we wanted to release a "strong" new version of the Product. We made many changes in the code so that it will be easier to use (and to upgrade). ZODB 3.3 final released

I'm pleased to announce the release of ZODB 3.3 final. This corresponds to the ZODB (and ZEO) in ZopeX3-3.0.0 release candidate 2. You can download a source tarball or Windows installer from: http://zope.org/Products/ZODB3.3 Since 3.3c1, some small fixes were made on code paths unique to Zope 2.8 usage (code not used by Zope X3, Zope 3, or by ZODB itself). And thanks to a 1-character change noted by Andreas Jung, the sizes of network messages exchanged between ZEO clients and servers are smaller now, up to a factor of 4 improvement in extreme cases. Zope X3 3.0.0 RC 2 released

Hello Zope community, The Zope 3 development team is proud to announce the second release candidate for Zope X3 3.0.0. Hopefully this will be the last one. Zope X3 is the next major Zope release and has been written from scratch based on the latest software design patterns and the experiences of Zope 2. The "X" in the name stands for "experimental", since this release does not try to provide any backward-compatibility to Zope 2. Downloads http://zope.org/Products/ZopeX3 Installation instructions for both Windows and Un*x/Linux are now available in the top level README.txt of the distribution. The binary installer is recommended for Windows. Changes since RC 1 - A security related bug was fixed. See the "Issue Collector":http://collector.zope.org/Zope3-Dev/286 for details. - Fixed a bug that would crash the API Doc tool, if no default skin was specified. - Fixed a couple of typos in the documentation. - Updated to latest version of the ZODB, version 3.3 final. - The 'zope.app.observable' package was removed from the release, since it was unusable. - The 'zope.app.i18nfile' package was removed, since it was always just a demo to demonstrate the internationalization of content. Silva 1.1 released

Silva 1.1 released =================== Infrae has just released Silva 1.1 (final). Silva 1.1 includes the following new features: * XSLT support for rendering Silva objects. This adds more flexibility to the way Silva objects are presented, and when used also provides a nice performance boost. XSLT support can optionally be enabled on a per-object basis. XSLT support needs libxml2/libxslt, but Silva also continues to work if you do not have these installed. * A new XML export/system that can also export and import asset data in a zip file. * abbr and acronym support for both forms editor and Kupu. * New parser for SilvaDocument forms-based editor, using a HTML subset instead of the old-style method using special characters. This should increase the performance of the parser and makes it easier to use. Besides new features Silva 1.1 of course also contains bugfixes. Silva 1.1 should work with Silva News 1.0 and SilvaExternalSources 0.9.1, both to be found on the Infrae website. Download -------- As of the 1.1 release cycle, Silva's download area has moved off zope.org to the infrae.com website.
