The CMF developer community and Zope Corporation are pleased to announce the release of version 2.0.0-alpha of the Zope Content Management Framework (CMF). This release is intended for testing purposes only; we do not recommend deploying it to production servers. What's new in this release? This alpha represents a first preview of all the changes and features you will see in CMF version 2.0. Some of the highlights are... - GenericSetup-integration as the replacement for the CMFSetup technology started in the CMF 1.5-series - the use of Zope 3-style interfaces throughout, bridged back to Zope 2-interfaces where needed for backwards compatibility - widespread integration with Zope 3/Five technologies, and the folding-in of the previous CMFonFive addon-product - pluggable TypeInformation objects - new-style Actions ... and of course countless bug fixes and other improvements. What is the CMF? The Zope Content Management Framework provides a set of services and content objects useful for building highly dynamic, content-oriented portal sites. As packaged, the CMF generates a site much like the Zope.org site. The CMF is intended to be easily customizable, in terms of both the types of content used and the policies and services it provides. [ANN] IncrementalSearch[2] -- Bugfix release

I found a bug in "IncrementalSearch[2]" that can cause wrong results under rare circumstances. One requirement is a "not" search embedded in an "or" search (but this is not sufficient to cause the problem). You find fixed versions at <http://www.dieter.handshake.de/pyprojects/zope> "IncrementalSearch[2]" is a low level search engine for the efficient execution of "and", "or" and "not" queries. Unlike traditional search engines (like that implemented by Zope's ZCatalog), it computes hits incrementally (one at a time) and interleaves hit determination and index lookup. If a query is a quite specific "and" query (that is the usual case), then "IncrementalSearch" can result in significantly reduced search times. I observed gains for "IncrementalSearch2" in an order from about 20 percent for queries including a large (bushy) "or" query (queries "IncrementalSearch2" cannot optimize well) up to 95 percent and more (for pure highly specific "and" queries). -- Dieter

Silva 1.5 beta 1 released

Silva 1.5 beta 1 released 19 january 2005 – Infrae has just released version 1.5 beta of the Silva content management system. This is a beta release for public testing. Please let us know about any problems! Silva 1.5 is the first Silva release that really starts using Zope 3 technology in the core, and is the first step in a longer evolution. It does not have a lot of externally visible feature changes, but focuses on making Silva work with Zope 2.8 and Five 1.2. Some of the changes: * Silva now uses Zope 3 interfaces. SilvaLayout (to be released) does not have to create Zope 3 marker interfaces anymore. * Silva now uses the Five/Zope 3 i18n architecture. PlacelessTranslationService is not in use anymore. * Use Zope 2.8 style ZODB transactions. * Some view code has been converted to be based on Zope 3 views. * Some adapters have been converted to be true Zope 3 adapters. See doc/developer_changes.txt in the Silva core package for more details about these changes. And of course a lot of bugs have been squashed: see HISTORY.txt in the package for complete details. What is Silva? Silva is an enterprise-class CMS for managing content for the web, print, and other media. Content is stored in clean and future-proof XML, independent of layout and presentation. Features include a multi-version workflow system, XSLT rendering support, integral WYSIWYG editor (Kupu), content reuse in multiple publications, sophisticated access management, extensive import/export facilities, fine-grained templating, and hi-res image storage and manipulation. I am pleased to announce the release of TextIndexNG V 3.1.4. TextIndexNG V 3 is a complete new implementation based on Zope 3 technologies and can be used both in Zope 2.8 or in Zope 3. What's new? - multi-field indexing and query support - multi-lingual support - configurable converters (through ZCML) - new indexing API (allowing you to hook your custom content types with TextIndexNG through Zope 3 adapters). Zope 3.2.0 released!

The Zope 3 development team is proud to announce Zope 3.2.0. Zope 3 is the next major Zope release and has been written from scratch based on the latest software design patterns and the experiences of Zope 2. It is our opinion that Zope 3 is more than ready for production use, which is why we decided to drop the 'X' for experimental from the name. We will also continue to work on making the transition between Zope 2 and Zope 3 as smooth as possible. As a first step, Zope 2.8 includes Zope 3 features in the form of Five. This is a long term effort. We're not there yet. **You can't run Zope 2 applications in Zope 3.** Downloads http://zope.org/Products/Zope3 Installation instructions for both Windows and Un*x/Linux are now available in the top level 'README.txt' file of the distribution. The binary installer is recommended for Windows. Zope 3.2 requires Python 2.4.2 to run. You must also have zlib installed on your system. Most Important Changes Since 3.1 - The ZServer has been replaced with the Twisted server. The Twisted server supports all that the ZServer supporting has well has HTTP over SSL natively and SFTP (disabled for now because of error handling problems). Also in the future it brings a better chance of other non-HTTP related protocols from being implemented for Zope3, like SMTP-in and IMAP. ZServer is still supported and will be used if you use the --zserver when you run mkzopeinstance. - Added a test browser. The test browser simulates a real Web browser as much as possible as a Python object. This allows us to write functional tests the same way the site would be experienced by the user. This greatly simplifies functional tests, makes documentation better and even helps analyzing usability. And of course, it can be used in functional doctests. - Changed the way returning large results is handled. The response.write method is no longer supported. Applications can now simply return files to the publisher. - Implemented the password managers proposal. Main idea beside the proposal is a standard way to implement password encoders/checkers, see zope.app.authentication.interfaces.IPasswordManager for details. + Added basic password managers: Plain Text, MD5, SHA1. + Support for password managers added for ZCML principals and principals saved in local PrincipalFolers. + Added bin/zpasswd command line script which helps to create ZCML principals. + Password managers support integrated into bin/mkzopeinstance. + New database generation created for convert local principals to new format. - Implemented the language namespace proposal. Now you can override the browser preferred language through the URL, like this: http://site.org/++lang++ru/path Note: If you want to use a custom IUserPreferredLanguages adapter and the '++lang++' feature together you should use zope.app.publisher.browser.CacheableBrowserLanguages adapter as a base class or at least as example. - Implemented a new object introspector. Instead of just providing information of the object's class, the new introspector focuses on providing information that is specific to the instance, such as directly provided interfaces and data, for example attribute values and annotation values. - Implemented the `devmode` switch for `zope.conf`. When turned on a ZCML feature called `devmode` is provided. Packages can then register functionality based on this feature. In Zope 3 itself, the devmode is used to only load the API doc is devmode; turning off the devmode thus closes a potential security hole and increases the start time by more than a second. - addMenuItem directive supports a `layer` attribute. - Added a re-implementation of i18n message IDs (now simply called ``Message``) that is immutable and thus can be treated like unicode strings with respect to security proxying. This implementation will replace the old one in upcoming versions. - Added "test" message catalog for testing i18n. If you specify ++lang++test in a URL, then all translated strings will be translated to [[domain][message_id], as in "[[zope][Preview]]". Text without the domain marker isn't translated. Five 1.2 and 1.3 released! ========================== The Five team is happy to announce the release of two Five versions today, Five 1.2 and 1.3! What is Five ------------ Five is a Zope 2 product that allows you to integrate Zope 3 technologies into Zope 2, today. Among others, it allows you to use Zope 3 interfaces, ZCML-based configuration, adapters, browser pages (including skins, layers, and resources), automated add and edit forms based on schemas, object events, as well as Zope 3-style i18n message catalogs. We've tried to keep the Five experience as close to Zope 3 as possible, so this means that what you learn while using Five should also be applicable to Zope 3, and viceversa. More information about Five can be found on our website, http://codespeak.net/z3/five/. Five 1.2 -------- Five 1.2 is the last release line of Five to work with Zope 2.8 and its included Zope X3 3.0. It does not work on Zope 2.7 anymore (use Five 1.1 if you're bound to Zope 2.7) Compared to 1.1, it introduces the following compelling list of new features: * Local site support Five now supports local sites in Zope 2. Sites are a concept known from Zope 3 and similar to CMF's sites (only that they can be nested). Thanks to Sidnei da Silva for the initial development back in March, Lennart Regebro and Philipp von Weitershausen for bringing it up to date for inclusion into Five 1.2. * Improved event support Five can now make standard Zope 2 containers (aka object managers) send Zope 3-style events for adding, moving, copying and deleting contained objects, instead of calling their manage_afterAdd, manage_beforeDelete, etc. methods. Thanks to Florent Guillaume for thinking through this non-trivial matter and implementing it. * Marker interfaces utility Five now includes a feature known from Zope X3 3.0's introspector, the ability to set marker interfaces on objects to influence their behaviour (such as view or adapter look-up). This also includes a browser page with a page template macro for doing so through-the-web. This feature is based on Sidnei da Silva's Plone-based product Flon. Thanks to him for the original implementation as well as Godefroid Chapelle, Whit Morriss and Yvo Schubbe for bringing it to Five 1.2. * Class registration through ZCML It is now possible to register Zope 2 classes through ZCML so that they show up in the ZMI as addable meta types. This basically obsolete's the boiler-plate ``initialize()`` function in products' ``__init__.py`` files, as well as equipping classes with a ``meta_type`` in the first place. Thanks to Yvo Schubbe for suggesting and implementing this great helper for cleaning out Zope 2 boiler plate code out of products. * New test runner Five 1.2 (and only 1.2) includes a forked copy of Zope 3.2's improved test runner which brings, among others, better doctest debugging and support for running tests on different levels and layers. Thanks to Tres Seaver for integrating this into Five 1.2. Five 1.3 -------- Five 1.3 is a straight port of Five 1.2 to Zope 3.2 which will be included in this December's Zope 2.9 release. Five 1.3 itself will also be part of Zope 2.9. It does not introduce any new features compared to Five 1.2, however, some restructuring has been made: * Most of the event work has been folded into Zope 2. That means that Zope 2.9 will ship with event-enabled object managers out of the box! * Several legacy packages were removed from Five as they are now included in Zope 2, such as Zope 3-style interfaces for OFS et.al. as well as the new test runner We are not providing a downloadable tarball of Five 1.3b. Instead it has been integrated into Zope 2.9 with which it will ship. To try out Zope 2.9, you have to currently check out the Zope 2 trunk from the subversion repository. About the Zope 3 Base --------------------- Five is part of the *Zope 3 Base* project, which aims to offer an approachable area for developers of Zope 3 related software.
