The CMF developer community and Zope Corporation are pleased to announce the release of version CMF-1.5.5-beta of the Zope Content Management Framework (CMF). This release is intended for testing purposes only; we do not recommend deploying it to production servers. The final release of version 1.5.5 is expected in the third week of November. What is the CMF? The Zope Content Management Framework provides a set of services and content objects useful for building highly dynamic, content-oriented portal sites. As packaged, the CMF generates a site much like the Zope.org site. The CMF is intended to be easily customizable, in terms of both the types of content used and the policies and services it provides. Five 1.2b and 1.3b released!

The Five team is happy to announce the release of two Five beta versions today, Five 1.2b and 1.3b! What is Five ------------ Five is a Zope 2 product that allows you to integrate Zope 3 technologies into Zope 2, today. Among others, it allows you to use Zope 3 interfaces, ZCML-based configuration, adapters, browser pages (including skins, layers, and resources), automated add and edit forms based on schemas, object events, as well as Zope 3-style i18n message catalogs. We've tried to keep the Five experience as close to Zope 3 as possible, so this means that what you learn while using Five should also be applicable to Zope 3, and viceversa. More information about Five can be found on our website, http://codespeak.net/z3/five/. Five 1.2 -------- Five 1.2 is the last release line of Five to work with Zope 2.8 and its included Zope X3 3.0. It does not work on Zope 2.7 anymore (use Five 1.1 if you're bound to Zope 2.7) Compared to the 1.1 release a month ago, it introduces the following compelling list of new features: * Local site support Five now supports local sites in Zope 2. Sites are a concept known from Zope 3 and similar to CMF's sites (only that they can be nested). Thanks to Sidnei da Silva for the initial development back in March, Lennart Regebro and Philipp von Weitershausen for bringing it up to date for inclusion into Five 1.2. * Improved event support Five can now make standard Zope 2 containers (aka object managers) send Zope 3-style events for adding, moving, copying and deleting contained objects, instead of calling their manage_afterAdd, manage_beforeDelete, etc. methods. Thanks to Florent Guillaume for thinking through this non-trivial matter and implementing it. * Marker interfaces utility Five now includes a feature known from Zope X3 3.0's introspector, the ability to set marker interfaces on objects to influence their behaviour (such as view or adapter look-up). This also includes a browser page with a page template macro for doing so through-the-web. This feature is based on Sidnei da Silva's Plone-based product Flon. Thanks to him for the original implementation as well as Godefroid Chapelle, Whit Morriss and Yvo Schubbe for bringing it to Five 1.2. * Class registration through ZCML It is now possible to register Zope 2 classes through ZCML so that they show up in the ZMI as addable meta types. This basically obsolete's the boiler-plate ``initialize()`` function in products' ``__init__.py`` files, as well as equipping classes with a ``meta_type`` in the first place. Thanks to Yvo Schubbe for suggesting and implementing this great helper for cleaning out Zope 2 boiler plate code out of products. * New test runner Five 1.2 (and only 1.2) includes a forked copy of Zope 3.2's improved test runner which brings, among others, better doctest debugging and support for running tests on different levels and layers. Thanks to Tres Seaver for integrating this into Five 1.2. Five 1.3 -------- Five 1.3 is a straight port of Five 1.2 to Zope 3.2 which will be included in this December's Zope 2.9 release. Five 1.3 itself will also be part of Zope 2.9. It does not introduce any new features compared to Five 1.2, however, some restructuring has been made: * Most of the event work has been folded into Zope 2. That means that Zope 2.9 will ship with event-enabled object managers out of the box! * Several legacy packages were removed from Five as they are now included in Zope 2, such as Zope 3-style interfaces for OFS et.al. as well as the new test runner We are not providing a downloadable tarball of Five 1.3b. Instead it has been integrated into Zope 2.9 with which it will ship. To try out Zope 2.9, you have to currently check out the Zope 2 trunk from the subversion repository. About the Zope 3 Base --------------------- Five is part of the *Zope 3 Base* project, which aims to offer an approachable area for developers of Zope 3 related software. The dangers of object oriented inheritance! Free food! * Andrew Sawyers will discuss using the open source cache server Squid with Zope, including a discussion of the O'Reilly book about Squid. * Allen Schmidt, Sr. Programmer for Fredericksburg.com - the website for the Free Lance-Star - will present on "Using Zope for Newspaper Publishing". * Jim Fulton, CTO of Zope Corporation, will present an abbreviated version of the argument given in Clemens Szyperski's Component Software for why both inheritance and delegation (e.g. acquisition) cause tight coupling and therefore should be avoided except in special circumstances. * We will serve delicious fruit, cheese, and soft drinks. zope on rails project

Does zope really have to be hard to learn? We don't think so. We are developing an easy way for medical professionals to create zope web GUI at http://www.medicinebrain.com. The idea is to make zope at least as easy to use as ruby on rails. We are looking for ideas and criticism of the freely available zrails code. Currently available is a zexp that contains an html framework, an easy to modify form processor, some web widgets, and database scripts. There is also a separate application called "Nanabush" that processes html files into zpt pages. The application splits each form element off into a script widget. This produces a model-view-controller architecture that is completely edit-able via web browser. Next up will be a more extensive html framework and more html widgets. The plans for Nanabush include a way to develop zope database applications in openoffice and migrate them to zope. The combination of zope and Openoffice 2 will make a powerful workflow solution. Stop by and give us your feedback and critic the code! This is beta software, it is not accurate or secure. Do not use for actual systems. Suggestions for the best opensource license to use are also welcome. Thanks Tim

[ANN] TextIndexNG 3.0.8 released

I am pleased to announce the release of TextIndexNG V 3.0.8. TextIndexNG V 3 is a complete new implementation based on Zope 3 technologies and can be used both in Zope 2.8 or 2.7 (with Five) or in Zope 3. What's new? - multi-field indexing and query support - multi-lingual support - configurable converters (through ZCML) - new indexing API (allowing you to hook your custom content types with TextIndexNG through Zope 3 adapters). Changes since V 3.0.8: - reorganized extension modules. They are now stored under the hierarchy 'zopyx.txng3'. For this reason **you need to recompile and reinstall all extension modules**. - optimized storage.insertDocument() to play more friendly with the ZODB (smaller transaction sizes). - Fixed a weird Python 2.4 incompatibility in the parser code: subclassing the EnglishParser resultet in unpredictable and non-deterministic errors! Requirements: - Zope 2.8 or Zope 2.7 (+ Five) or Zope 3 (Zope 3 has nothing like catalogs yet) TextIndexNG V3 will *not* run with bare Zope 2.7 installations without Five (and this will not be changed in the future). Zope 2.8.4 released

Hi all, on behalf of Zope Corporation and the Zope community I am pleased to announce the release of Zope 2.8.4. You can download Zope 2.8.2 from http://www.zope.org/Products/Zope/2.8.4/ This version obsoletes Zope 2.8.2 and Zope 2.8.3 which shipped with an older Docutils version as expected. For security reasons you should update to Zope 2.8.4. In addition this release fixes a potential security problem when using Zope with Python 2.4 - although Python 2.4. is neither recommended nor supported. This release does *not mean* that Python 2.4 is from now on supported but there are already installation using Python 2.4 (mostly because modern Linux distributions ship with Python 2.4 and Zope usually uses the system-widePython installation). Some new features of Zope 2.8: - ZODB 3.4 with MVCC (multi version concurrency control) support. MVCC solves nearly every problem with ZODB read-conflict errors which is very important for high-traffic Zope sites. - Extension Classes were rewritten as Python new-style classes making all features of Python new-style classes available in Zope objects. Five tutorial for Plone Developers now online

Hello all, I'm happy to announce that a prose version of the Five for Plone Developers tutorial is now available through the Appetizers section of http://worldcookery.com. The text is based on a 90 minute tutorial I gave at this year's Plone Conference in Vienna and introduces Five and the Zope 3 concepts in five easy steps. Although Plone-focused, this tutorial can also serve as a good starter document for other Zope 2 developers who want to dive into Five and Zope 3. The actual code used in the examples is not very Plone-specific. In fact, throughout the five steps the example code is actually abstracted more and more according to Zope 3 paradigms, so that the result is a Zope 2 product designed to work with other systems than Plone. I would like to thank all the attendees of my talk at the Plone Conference, especially Martin Aspelli. Their positive feedback and Martin's nagging made me consider padding out the slides to a full tutorial. If you have any suggestions or other feedback regarding the tutorial, feel free to contact me. FunkLoad 1.2.0 is out. About FunkLoad: FunkLoad is a open source functional and load web tester, written in Python, whose main use cases are functional and regression testing of web projects, performance testing by loading the web application and monitoring your servers, load testing to expose bugs that do not surface in cursory testing, and stress testing to overwhelm the web application resources and test the application recoverability, and writing web agents by scripting any web repetitive task, like checking if a site is alive. Changes since 1.1.0: * Credential and Monitor services have been refactored they are now true unix daemon service, controllers are now in pure python (no more bash scripts). * Switching from distutils to setuptools using EasyInstall_, installing FunkLoad is now just a question of ``sudo easy_install funkload``. * Moving demo examples into the egg, just type ``fl-install-demo`` to extract the demo folder * Several bugs have been fixed.
