Backtalk allows inplace commenting, similar to PHP's approach to incorporating community input. These comments then get integrated into the official version of the docs, produced at each Zope release. Jim traveled to England for a catalog sprint Feb 21-23. Tres and Paul went to Saarbrucken on Mar 4-6 for a workflow sprint with iCube. Jim and others went on Mar 22-24 to NYC for a sprint hosted by CodeIt. Jim went to the Beehive BBQ in Berlin on Apr 8-10 for a general purpose sprint. Finally, there is a sprint planned for EuroPython 2002 in Belgium. Notes for all of these are on the sprint page. The development pace for Zope 3 has picked up, with strong participation from Steve Alexander, Gary Poster, PythonLabs, and others. Don't ask about ZCML without your asbestos suit on. At the beginning of June, Jim did a massive refactoring on the Zope3InWonderland branch. Leo collaborated in depth, and at great pain, to help isolate uptime issues with Zope 2.5 and Python 2.1.1. Thanks mostly to Matt's detective work and patching, 2.5.1 isolated and fixed the problem, and also included many other bug fixes. On Jun 4, Brian Lloyd invoked papal authority to set a date for 2.6a1. This release has the distinction of being driven mostly by community contributions. Jon Udell, who regularly writes some of the most interesting articles around, wrote a "Zope Lessons Learned" article in April. The "Road to Enlightenment" section at the end provides a useful survey of what's good in Zope, as well as what needs attention in Zope 3. DevShed ran a pair of very useful articles in April. "Zope and MySQL" by icarus showed how a convert from PHP could approach RDBMS integration. "The Number Game" by Hamis Kamath showed the building of an online poll. Beehive hosted another classic event in Berlin. The Beehive BBQ series will hopefully grow to be a regular part of the Zope universe. Beehive also launched a subscription-based "ZopeMag". May 2002 saw an exciting open source conference, the International Forum of Free Software in Porto Alegre, Brazil. ANNOUNCE: Pound - reverse proxy and load balancer - v0.2

This is to announce the release of Pound v0.2. Changes from previous version: - added HTTP/HTTPS request checking. Pound will only accept well-formed requests, thus protecting the back-end server(s) from malicious clients. I believe that this is now good enough to allow a ZServer to run without an Apache/Squid front-end (though you may still want Squid as a cache manager). - added request logging (can still be turned off with a flag). This means that now there is a central log with the correct client addresses. - fixed a few minor bugs. Many thanks to all the people who responded with suggestions and remarks. A few people asked why not simply use Squid rather than Pound. The answer is mostly a question of taste and philosophy: I believe a load-balancer should do no caching. The load-balancer, by its very nature, may become a bottle-neck for the whole system, and thus should be as light-weight as possible. If your application could really benefit from a front-end cache (which is not always the case) then put the caching proxy on the back-end server - e.g. between Pound and Zope - but allow Pound to run alone on a biggish machine. What is Pound (from the Web page) - a reverse-proxy: it passes requests from client browsers to one or more back-end servers. - a load balancer: it will distribute the requests from the client browsers among several back-end servers, while keeping session information. - an SSL wrapper: Pound will decrypt HTTPS requests from client browsers and pass them as plain HTTP to the back-end browsers. - an HTTP/HTTPS sanitizer: Pound will verify requests for correctness and accept only well-formed ones. EuroPython2002: Extention of Early-Bird registration

Hi, Due to the fact that at the end of the early-bird date, lot's of people waked up and registered for the congress (and because of the possible internet problems caused by the bancruptcy of KPNQwest), we've extended the early bird until 9th of June. We hope that the doubters among us, will find this interesting now that they are still able to profit from the early bird registration. But be warned, this is the final date! At the moment we've reached a total of more than 150 people at the EuroPython congress. That's already nice for a first congress, but it should be more.... Don't you think you could make great deals with people over there? There must be somebody to whom you can speak about a certain problem. With 150 people, it must be possible to make some friends or to see some old ones back... It can't be that Europe has only such a small group of Python and/or Zope developers/users. What about people outside of Europe? Have you seen the talks? It must be worthwhile to pay a visit to the conference.... and if not... well enjoy the Belgian beer, chocolates and food..... that's something I'm sure you will never forget! And now the early bird registration has been extended, .... so if you had doubts earlier, throw them away and just visit EuroPython2002! This is the second public release of our CVSFile product. http://www.zope.org/Members/arielpartners/CVSFile CVSFile enables Zope content to be served out of files residing in CVS sandboxes, and provides access to common CVS functions through the web in the Zope Management Interface. This new release adds much requested features like * batch add capability -- add instances whole directories at a time! * tunable parameters for CVS commands, and * programmability you may now create instances using scripts rather than through the web GUI if you wish. There are even a set of detailed example scripts to help you get started! Why not simply use ZCVSFolder? Because CVSFile stores files in CVS as normal files, rather than as Python "pickles." This makes it easy to use the same content, held in CVS, in both Zope and non-Zope contexts. CVSFile extends ExternalFile, and therefore inherits all of its functionality. This new release requires ExternalFile version 1.0. This product is compatible with the popular ExternalEditor product. In order to upgrade your existing CVSFile 0.7 objects to version 0.8, you will need to run the repair() method. See the section on Schema Migration in the README.txt file for more details. There are even a set of detailed example scripts to help you get started! This new release is compatible with CVSFile-0-8. It also extends its "workalike" capabilities. ExternalFile can now behave like any of the following: * DTMLDocument * DTMLMethod * Image * File Why not simply use ExtFile? Because ExternalFile supports pointing to a file "in situ" like a symbolic link, rather than copying it into some central repository directory. This may not seem like a big deal, until you consider that those files might be stored in a revision control system like CVS. ExternalFile gives you the ability to create a Zope object that points to a file in, for example, a CVS sandbox for its content. ExternalFile is usable by itself. It is also the base class for CVSFile. This product is compatible with the popular ExternalEditor product.
