External Editor 0.1 - Use your favorite editor directly from the ZMI

Are you getting a bit tired of kludgy Zope editing solutions? Have textareas got you down? Not entirely impressed with WebDAV? Is FTP getting on your last nerve? Have you ever wanted to just click on an object in the ZMI, have your favorite editor pop up and edit to your heart's content? Impossible...too good to be true...never gonna happen, right? *Wrong*. ExternalEditor is a new approach to integrating Zope with external editing tools. It consists of two parts: a simple Zope product and a configurable client-side helper application that work together with the editing tools of your choice. Because of the way the helper application is designed, it can work with *any* graphical editor that can open and save a file. It works equally well with text and binary data. Click and edit your Page Templates in emacs, your images with gimp. When you save the changes, the helper application automatically uploads the data back to Zope. When you exit the application, the helper app also exits. Edit as many objects simultaneously as you like. ExternalEditor automatically handles locking so that only one person can be editing an object at a time (externally or through the web). These are ten minute presentations on a project or technology that require less preparation than formal talks. Due to the fast pace, lightning talks have become a crowd favorite at Python conferences. EuroPython 2002 is the important event for Python and Zope users in Europe. I am pleased to announce the first alpha release of TextIndexNG V 1.0. TextIndexNG is a pluggable index for the ZCatalog that enhances the full text indexing capabilities of Zope by providing the following features: * support for document converters (HTML, PDF, WinWord, PowerPoint, Postscript). ANNOUCE: Project Gideon

Project Gideon is an application framework for zope. It was originally created to build a CPAN repository for python in zope. The Gideon project is still young and experimental in stability, but i hope that the ideas and implementation will still be of use to other zope developers. Gideon is released under the GPL. It can be downloaded from http://www.zope.org/Members/k_vertigo/Products/Gideon it has no external dependencies other than Zope (possibly requiring *nix as well) Lots of work is still needed to finish and improve both the Python Repository and Gideon. [Ann] VHM RemoteAddr patch

VirtualHostMonster, or short VHM, is usually used together with Apache's rewrite rules and proxy mode to implement virtual hosting. Unfortunately, when used in this way, Zope's REMOTE_ADDR is the (usually uninteresting) IP address of the Apache server and not the one of the browser/its proxy. There is an Apache patch that passes this IP address via an VIA header, but this is against the HTTP 1.1 spec. This VHM patch enables VHM to take the remote address from the URL. If the URL segments following the VirtualHostBase/protocol/host are VirtualHostRemoteAddr/remote_addr, then VHM sets Zope's REMOTE_ADDR to remote_addr. This feature is used together with Apache rewrite rules of the form: RewriteRule pattern http://localhost:8080/VirtualHostBase/proto/host/VirtualHostRemoteAddr/%{RE… [P]. StartupScripts 0.9.0 Released

The StartupScripts product provides a way of having Python scripts in the ZODB run when Zope first starts up. This is an initial release for the purpose of having it more widely tested in practical situations. Feedback would be much appreciated, especially as to whether there might be a better way of doing things such as getting access to the application context when required by the implementation. Note that instances of the Python startup scripts need to be placed in the root folder in order for them to get run at Zope startup. When run the scripts will be run with the privileges of the script owner. The internal implementation of the StartupScript object is such that it extends the PythonScript object, so anything you can do with a normal Python script you can also do with a StartupScript object. The only exception to this may be that the "container" object passed to a script may not have all the same methods and attributes which are present when a script object is called through the web. Ie., no RESPONSE object, and no way of getting the URL associated with the request. -- Graham Dumpleton (grahamd(a)dscpl.com.au)
