WARNING: Zope 2.0b2 considered harmful to ZClasses

Gang, Well, this is unusual, but unfortunately ZClasses seem to be largely broken in beta 2. How this happened we're not sure, and we sat and tried to fix it as quickly as possible, but the problem seems to be quite deep, and not due to any recent single change. What this means is that if you're using ZClasses you shouldn't even *think* about using Zope 2.0b2. This would be a bad idea. To prevent problems, I'll be removing it from the web site. Hello, This week saw the launch of Bruce Perens's Technocrat.net. This is one of the highest profile Zope sites to date. Butch Landingin's Squishdot product for Zope is a big part of what makes the site tick. Way to go Bruce and Butch! Another major thread on the Zope lists this week was e-commerce. Scott Robertson released a credit card processing product for Zope, and there was a lot of discussion about existing Zope e-commerce packages and where to go from here. Finally, activity continues at a fairly intense rate in CVS as preparations for beta two are made. And thanks to David Ascher, you can now easily download snapshots of the Zope development tree. * Bruce Perens's new technology policy site, Technocrat.net made a big splash this week. ANN: ZSybaseDA 1.0.1

Greetings, Here is the official ZSybaseDA. Currently, the ZSybaseDA is a level 2 DA, meaning that it will work with a threaded Zope, but all transactions with all other level 2 DAs are serialized in the transaction manager. The ZSybaseDA REQUIRES Zope 2.0! There are several bug fixes in this DA over the previous one (which we didn't ever release so it doesn't matter much anyway...) A bug in the ctsybasemodule that caused open sybase connections to hang around until the process died is fixed A bug that didn't let you re-open a manually close database connection is fixed. And others. Note that the ctsybase module appears to be orphaned by it's original maintainer, as our attempts to get ahold of him have failed. We will continue to extend and maintain his work by taking over the ctsybase code until he steps back up or someone else does. Any bug reports or problems with the ctsybase module should be sent to zope-dev(a)zope.org. Note that although ZSybaseDA *is* an officially supported Digital Creations product, *the ctsybase module is **not** supported*. It behooves us to fix bugs in it, but we cannot prioritize it unless a customer opens a ticket with us. Thanks. Please consider the 1.0.1 release of the ZSybaseDA as tested beta code. DA Status

Gang, I've started to put up a list of status for all the DA's on the web site: http://www.zope.org/Download/DAStatus Please look over this and let me know if you have anything to change. I will be adding information about contributed DAs as it is collected/contributed. One thing I would like to make clear about all DC-supported DAs... they will all be at least Level 2 by the official release of Zope 2.0. In addition, if you wish to beat a DA into L2 immediately, all you need to do is: * Mix in the Shared.DC.ZRDB.THUNK.THUNKED_TM instead of normal one * Call self._register before you do a query * And implement self._begin, self._finish, self._abort This gets you L2 + integration with transaction support. This list will expand and grow over the next couple of days. Chris

Hello, The big news this week was the release of Zope 2.0 beta one. Zope 2 final is getting closer and closer. Beta one increases stability over the alpha releases and also adds a few missing pieces like the ability to tie permissions to factories. Also you can now export Zope objects to XML. Speaking of XML, as of beta one all basic Zope objects support a subset of the DOM Element interface, and the unsupported XML Document product is out and in CVS. * Zope 2.0 beta one was released this week. Now you can download a binary release of Zope 2. http://www.zope.org/Download/Releases/Zope-2.0.0b1 * The Zope site received a look and feel makeover. Most people seem to like the new design. A couple people posted describing the strange feeling of having the entire site change while browsing it. ANN: The Zippy Tag

Greetin's Zope is, as we all know, a very powerful application development and content management tool. Whenever we come upon problems that need to be solved in the real world, Zope is always the perfect piece of software that solves all problems, very well. This is how we designed it, through real world use. Zope solves it's problems though the use of superior technology. With ground breaking concepts like acquisition, pure web object orientation, a simple management interface, and secure and flexible security, Zope can take on any other 'web portal tool kit' commercial or otherwise. Up to this day however, Zope lacked one feature that would complete it's total Zope Zen. The ability to insert random 'Zippy the Pinhead' quotes into your Content. This dire need has been fulfilled, introducing the Zippy DTML tag: http://www.zope.org/Download/Contrib/Zippy.tgz This Product contains the MIT Zippy the Pinhead database, and distributed with GNU Emacs, and a simple 12 line Python class (not including comments). This is probably the simplest example of a DTML tag to date. To use the Zippy tag, simple untar and ungzip the Zippy.tgz file in your main Zope directory, restart Zope, and an variation on the following complex Zippy tag syntax:  For a more cheerfull, and possibly more productive development experience, place this DTML in your standard_html_error file and smile with each traceback. -Michel
