Zope/Python Users Group in Washington, DC Re-Formed

After a hiatus, a new group for Python, Zope, and Plone programmers in DC is forming. Our goal is to network and further educate ourselves on programming in Python. While not exclusively for Zope or Plone developers, we expect there to be a focus for these technologies. We have a formation meeting scheduled: Thursday, July 8th 7:00pm-9:00pm Porter Novelli Board Room, 1909 K Street NW. This is very close to both the red line and orange lines of the DC Metro, and close to many restaurants and bars. For information on the meeting, please see http://zpugdc.org/meetings/mtg1. At our first meeting, we'd like to plan the group and gauge interest for regular meetings and presentations. After the meeting, we'll likely adjourn to a nearby bar for a round of drinks. Our mailing list will announce future meetings, and provide social, job-board, and technical support for DC-area Python, Zope, and Plone users. zope.org maillists - subscriber-only posting policy being favored

I instituted a subscriber-only posting policy on the zope(a)zope.org list at the end of last week (friday afternoon), and haven't encountered any problems with it. In the process we learned that gmail postings are *not* inhibited (to the contrary, gmail postings circumvent the policy, for which we'll have to compensate), and that the policy generally works quite well. The rejection message on these lists includes hints about why the message got rejected and how to enable posting from alternate addresses, so legitimate posters should have recourse if they need it. However, let me know if you get stuck with problems. On tuesday i started to apply the policy to all the applicable lists i manage, and recommend it for all zope.org lists. Death to spam. Zope 3.0 final bug and cleanup days

Hello everyone, nearly a month has passed since the last release. I originally planned to release Zope X3.0.0 final on or release candidate 1 on July 1. Due to a lack of contributions towards X3.0.0 the past month, we will not able to make this date. However, I am determined to not push the date much further back. Therefore I call upon all experienced and in-experienced Zope 3 developers and helpers on a bug and cleanup week! The bug and cleanup days will be between July 6-9, 2004. If you would like to work on tasks on July 5th, since it is a US holiday and you have time, then feel free to do so; I will most likely be around! Here is an overview of tasks to do: 1. Fix all outstanding (and applicable) Collector issues. The collector is located at http://collector.zope.org/Collectors/Zope3-dev. There are about 70 open bugs, of which at least 20 are credible and fixable (I think). 2. Start removing XXX comments. Christian's XXX report can be found at http://amy.gocept.com/~ctheune/XXXreport.html. There are about 500 of these comments. Not all need to be fixed now, but many should. Christian, maybe it would be useful to make a Zope application out of this report, so that we can comment on the XXX comments? 3. Finish the tasks listed in the http://dev.zope.org/Zope3/SpringCleaningDay2004 proposal. It is not spring anymore, but I think these defects should be fixed in the source before the release. 4. Documentation format. Currently we have an unhealthy mix of reST and STX formatted doc strings in the Zope 3 source code. Since we decided to go with reST, we should make sure that all doc strings are formatted this way. This is a great task for non-developers to get to know Zope 3's source. 5. Update/Create translations. The only languages that are in decent/good shape right now are English, Russian, German and French. If you are interested in Zope X3.0.0 supporting your favorite/native language, then please let me know and I get you started. The list above is in order of importance. We definitely need to get the bulk of 1-3 done before the final release. I want as many obvious bugs as possible gone and a solid documentation via the API doc tool. BTW, one way of ensuring the quality of the user interface would be to write functional tests! Sounding out mailling list policies

There's been a proposal to better prevent spam-type garbage on prominent zope lists by restricting postings to only those that come from list-subscription addresses. I'm considering experimenting with the subscriber-originating restriction on a few of the highest-traffic lists that i manage, and will go ahead and do so unless i hear strenuous objections by tuesday of next week. I'm planning to try this on the zope(a)zope.org and zope-dev(a)zope.org lists. The restriction would be automatic rejection of any posts that originate from anything other than subscriber addresses. The rejection notice for those messages would explain the policy and detail how to subscribe, plus how to disable delivery to secondary addresses. (Thanks to joe block for that suggestion.) Zope Lists

The zope.org lists have been migrated to new hardware. The lists and archives are updated as of ~10 minutes prior to the DNS switch; so I expect them to be as current as I could get. I've heard of people getting resubscribed to lists which they had recently unsubscribed from. Since the old system was not being managed by us, I do not have any details as to what/why that might have happened, so if you find youself resubscribed now we appologize. ZODB 3.3 beta 1 released

I'm pleased to announce the release of ZODB 3.3 beta 1. As always with the first beta release, the feature set for ZODB 3.3 is frozen now. The ZODB 3.3b1 release requires Python 2.3.3. Python 2.3.4 is recommended, and will be required for ZODB 3.3 final. This version of ZODB supports Zope 2 and Zope 3. ZODB 3.3b1 matches the ZODB code included in the ZopeX3-3.0.0b1 release, and contains code that will be released in Zope 2.8. You can download a source tarball or Windows installer from: http://zope.org/Products/ZODB3.3 The changes since ZODB 3.3a3 consist mostly of fixes for longstanding ZODB bugs, several of which were backported to the Zope 2.7 maintenance branch. The news file lists the changes in more detail: http://zope.org/Products/ZODB3.3/NEWS.html Since ZODB 3.3 will be at the heart of database operations in Zope 2.8 and Zope 3, it's important that it be tested as broadly as possible.
