Please join us this Wednesday, May 10, 7:30-9:00 PM, for the next meeting of the Fredericksburg, VA Zope and Python User Group ("ZPUG"). Come for Pygame, Twisted, PyObjectiveC (i.e. Python for Macs), and food! Zac Bir will present on using Twisted with PyObjC to make a Flickr photo browser. Benji York will give an overview of Pygame (http://pygame.org) using as an example a small program that displays the results of unit test runs (from buildbot) as fish swimming (or not) in an aquarium. Zope 3.3.0 beta 1 released!

The Zope 3 development team is proud to announce Zope 3.3.0 beta 1. Zope 3 is the next major Zope release and has been written from scratch based on the latest software design patterns and the experiences of Zope 2. Cleanup of the Zope 3 packages has continued to ensure a flexible and scalable platform. We continued the work on making the transition from Zope 2 to Zope 3 by making Zope 2.10 use even more of the Zope 3 packages. But we're not there yet. **You can't run Zope 2 applications in Zope 3.** Downloads http://zope.org/Products/Zope3 Installation instructions for both Windows and Un*x/Linux are now available in the top level "README.txt":http://www.zope.org/Products/Zope3/3.3.0b1/README.txt file of the distribution. The binary installer is recommended for Windows. Zope 3.3 requires Python 2.4.1 to run. You must also have zlib installed on your system. Most Important Changes Since 3.2 - Provided a new component registry API that allows multiple component registries to be combined more flexibly than before. See 'zope.component.interfaces.IComponentRegistry' for more information. - Greatly simplified local-component registration. See 'zope.component.interfaces.IComponentRegistry' for more information. - Moved many packages out of zope.app to make them easier to use outside of Zope. - Change the session credentials plugin to make it configurable in which fields it looks for the credentials. - Added a new API for collating text. You can now adapt a locale to 'zope.i18n.interfaces.ILocales.ICollator'. You can then use that to sort strings, such as menu entries, in a locale-specific fashion. - A new 'zope.annotation.factory' helper function that makes it easier to create annotations. Also added a README in 'zope.annotation' which explains how to use it. - Added a more complete set of widgets for fields that use iterable sources. These widgets now mirror the set provided by vocabulary-based fields. - Added a cleaner and more robust API to testbrowser for setting file-upload data. - Deprecated several ZCML directives: * factory * vocabulary * content (as an alias to the class directive) * modulealias * renderer:renderer - The 'browser:layer' directive and the 'ILayer' interface has been deprecated. Registering layers has become obsolete, layers should be created as interfaces extending 'IBrowserRequest'. - The 'browser:skin' directive has been deprecated. Skins should be created as interfaces extending 'IBrowserRequest' and can be registered using a simple 'utility' directive. - The 'ISkin' interface has been renamed to 'IBrowserSkinType'. [Warning] "ManagableIndex" "Zope2.8+" incompatibility

WARNING! We hit an incompatibility of "ManagableIndex" with "Zope 2.8+". For Python new style classes, "__len__" instance attributes are no longer taken into account in the implementation of the "len" builtin. "len" now only looks for "__len__" class attributes. From "Zope 2.8+" on, all persistent Zope objects are instances of new style classes. Especially, "ManagableIndex"es are new style classes. "ManagableIndex"'s "__len__" instance attribute is no longer used by "len". Some Zope base class defines the class method "__len__" to return 1. As a consequence, "len" applied to a "ManagableIndex" always returns 1 in Zope 2.8 and later (until "ManagableIndex 1.3.1"). The badly behaving "len" can seriously confuse "AdvancedQuery" (and other similar query frameworks) that uses "len(index)" to guide the implementation of sorting. In our observed case, "AdvancedQuery" sorting was 3 to 5 times slower and read 3 times more objects than necessary. The bug is fixed in "ManagableIndex 1.3.1". Five release fest: 1.2.4, 1.3.5, 1.4c and 1.5b released!

The Five team is happy to announce the release of two Five bugfix releases, 1.2.4 and 1.3.5, as well as two Five betas, 1.4c and 1.5b today. What is Five ------------ Five is a Zope 2 product that allows you to integrate Zope 3 technologies into Zope 2, today. Among others, it allows you to use Zope 3 interfaces, ZCML-based configuration, adapters, browser pages (including skins, layers, and resources), automated add and edit forms based on schemas, object events, as well as Zope 3-style i18n message catalogs. We've tried to keep the Five experience as close to Zope 3 as possible, so this means that what you learn while using Five should also be applicable to Zope 3, and viceversa. More information about Five can be found on our website, http://codespeak.net/z3/five/. About Five 1.4 and 1.5 ---------------------- Five 1.4 and 1.5 are feature releases. They are basically equivalent except that Five 1.4 works with Zope 2.9/3.2 (only) and 1.5 works with Zope 2.10/3.3 (only). Five 1.5 will be included in Zope 2.10. Most important features are: * Added viewlet and content provider support. A big thanks to Alec Mitchell and his helpers at the Archipelago sprint for making this possible. * Add zope.formlib support. Please see ``doc/formlib.txt`` for more information. A big thanks to Jan-Wijbrand Kolman for this. * Port zope.testbrowser to Zope 2. You can now use Products.Five.testbrowser.Browser in functional tests. Infrae announces the first public release of Document Library 3 may 2006 - Infrae has just released the first public version of Document Library (1.1b). Document Library is a document management application intended for the tracking of large amounts of documents in an organization. Document Library is open source. It is also open data: the contents of Document Library can be harvested using the standard OAI-PMH protocol and integrated with other applications. Integration with the Silva CMS using this technology is provided. What is the Document Library? Organizations deal with numerous documents, such as word processor documents and PDFs. These documents often reside on someone's computer and are not network accessible. Versions of documents are hard to track - the same document may be passed around using email in multiple versions over time. In large organizations it therefore becomes important to structure the flow of documents and present them in a common format. This is typically done using a document management system. Document Library is one such document management system. Information in the Document Library can be accessed using the Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH), meaning that besides being open source, the Document Library is also a good example of an open data application. Because it is open data, the Document Library is easier to integrate with other applications, such as the Silva CMS or any other application capable of OAI-PMH harvesting. Features of the Document Library include: * Automatic conversion service: using OpenOffice, the Document Library can convert Word documents into PDFs and plain text, PDFs into plain text. The plain text version is important in that it allows for full-text indexing of document contents, and also makes documents more accessible to people with disabilities. * Publication workflow: documents only become available for harvesting and download after a review process. * Delegation of control: reviewers ("librarians") can be assigned to particular sections. * Dynamic access: authors have automatic access to all the documents that list them as an author. * Versions: multiple versions of the same document can coexist, one public and one under preparation. * Email reminder functionality: users receive emails of the progress of the document through the workflow. * OAI-PMH data provider: allows other systems to harvest document metadata using standard protocol. * Integration with Silva CMS (using OAI-PMH). * Fast upload and download integration with Apache using Tramline. * Easy overview screens for librarians. * Smart file upload user interface: files need to be uploaded only once even if rest of form needs to be amended. * Document Library is built using the powerful Zope 3 application server platform. I am pleased to announce the release of TextIndexNG V 3.1.9. TextIndexNG V 3 is a complete new implementation based on Zope 3 technologies and can be used both in Zope 2.8 or in Zope 3. What's new? - multi-field indexing and query support - multi-lingual support - configurable converters (through ZCML) - new indexing API (allowing you to hook your custom content types with TextIndexNG through Zope 3 adapters). Changes in V 3.1.9: - added explicit check for the existence of the extension module so TextIndexNG3 will now fail at startup time with an exception instead of failing when creating new index instances - added UI support for valid word separators - added IObjectWrapper interface to core indexer engine to provide generic support for objects wrapped into some kind of wrapper. The purpose of the interface is to attach IObjectWrapper to wrapper classes using five:implements without having the need to modify exisiting code. - added support to deal better with indexing CMF content where the content object is wrapped inside a CMFCore.CatalogTool.IndexableObjectWrapper instance. Technical Preview of Blob support in ZODB

Hi everybody, the ZODB team is proud to announce a technical preview of a Blob implementation for ZODB. Blobs are used to efficiently storage large amounts of binary data within a database. This implementation uses real files on the file system in combination with any ZODB storage (FileStorage, ...) and native support for ZEO clusters. It is efficient in terms of memory and CPU usage. As this is a technical preview announcement, please notice that this code might crash your computer, delete your data, and destroy your homework.
