Hi Jon - You are correct that we need something featherweight for very specific features/changes. I know that it's not optimal, but for right now the process for things like this is to add a feature request (preferably w/patch) to the collector. My hope is that some of the other things going on will allow us to be better about getting to those things. I expect to still try to get the community involved in those small decisions (voting, etc. on the dev list). Hopefully that will be good enough to hold us for a little while - I'm open to feedback on how we might improve this (though for the immediate near term I prefer to focus the bulk of effort on working out kinks in the process for larger projects). ZPatterns: Coad "Object Models"

Hi Folks, After the ZPatterns chat on Friday, it looked like a few people were thinking of getting into Peter Coad's book "Object Models: Strategies, patterns and applications". I've just received my copy, and I'll be starting it later today. I intend to use a Wiki to record my observations and thoughts about the book, as I read it. Optimization and speed

Hello everyone, I write this mail, because I could not find anything useful in the archives: I have a pretty big site with quiet a big database (PostGreSQL) in the background. When a site loads I can tell that after about 5 seconds the site is ready to download. The site downloads quickly thereafter if I am on a T1, DSL or Cable Modem connection. But since most of our users have 28.8k and 56k modem connection, we have to optimize for them too. When accessing the site over a modem, it takes a long time to load the site and then it pops up all at once (in IE (AOL) and Netscape). Is there a way that I can send parts of the HTML as it is generated, so that the customer starts seeing information before the entire site is loaded. Our site is about 50% slower than our competitors sites (we are serving 62kB and the competitor has up to 203kB and is 50% faster!!!) which use PHP and ColdFusion. I know that Zope is not slower. I strongly believe it is the HTML output which is not optimized (we are going to speed up the DB connection very soon by dedicating a NIC only for the DB communication). Technical Facts: - Zope 2.1.6+PCGI+Apache - Virtual Hosts for HTTP and HTTPS - PostGreSQL 7.0 (DB size: 50MB), ZPyGreSQLDA, UserDB - ZODB threads: 4 - Web Server: Pentium 500, RH 6.1, 322MB RAM (not all used), 100 MBit NIC - DB Server: Pentium 500, RH 6.1, 322MB RAM (plenty left to use), 100 MBit NIC - dedicated subnet If someone could give me some tips where I should start looking for speed holes, please let me know. Do you think it is the DB which could be so slow and I should cache search results more, are there ZServer/Apache options I can set or anything else in Zope I should have a look at? Building A MailMan Search Interface

I've come across an itch. I'm tired of having to go through the mailing archives to find what i need. The search interface at egroups, is a bit slow and cumbersome. The one at ntlpd is much nicer, but i'd like to have my own so i can point an archiver/search interface at any mailman mailing list. So i decided i'd like to make a generic mailman search interface in zope. i've got a cronable retrieval script working that grabs archives. the next step is pretty crucial and i thought i'd ask around for advice. My question than becomes one of storage and parsing. I'm looking for suggestions on how to do this in an efficient and speedy manner. I'm willing to use linux/nix specific stuff if it helps performance. options: first question that applies to most of these approaches is whether to store mails an individual items or in default format of the text archive. flat file: this gives me a couple of parsing/searching options. like using grep or the c regexp library or the camel library (from helix code's evolution) any other options for this format? downside, this introduces some minor hurdles with presentation. zodb - btree folder for parsing/indexing this basically forces me to use zcatalog, which i don't think will scale to the amount of raw text without lotsa of ram. i could be wrong (i haven't gone through the Catalog code), but this is my working understanding of it. if i store the emails as archives i could probably whip up a reasonably speedy external method that would search through them. one benefit will be the ease of the presentation logic. but this is secondary to a speedy system. rdbms (probably postgres - maybe mysql) i'd prefer postgres since i'll probably be doing some other work with it. but %like% is probably one of the most expensive operations you can use on a db and its pretty limited in syntax. if i had a spare oracle system than i'd drop it in a heartbeat and use Intertext Media jaunx for searching. But i'd hate to tie this to a very expensive closed system. mysql seems to excel at speed (perhaps because it was designed for it:) but again the limitations of sql search syntax pop up. if anyone knows of any good ways to search through text in a db i'd love to hear about em. right now, i'm leaning slightly towards a flat file storage, but i'd love to hear some suggestions. Making ZClasses AutoForm Generate

I was reading over on linuxworld about some of Nick's complaints against zope. one of them was the lack of ZClasses being able to autogenerate forms for their property sheets. i wrote up some dtml methods which do just that, see http://lists.zope.org/pipermail/zope/2000-July/029325.html (i would have cross-posted but i was expecting a spanish inquisition:) any DC people want to comment about folding something akin to this into Zope's ZClass Machinery. However, I have 2 very small but useful additions to Zope I wish to make. Both additions are already available for download on zope.org - and have been tested extensively. However, the larger of the two changes is perhaps 80 lines of code. So, my question is, could a side-line process be created for the integration of already existent, tested, and somewhat small, code changes? My fear, which I have already seen come to life through use of the collector, is that without such a lightwieght process for occasional small changes - many already existent (and many future) small changes to Zope will be bypassed rather then integrated due to the time needed to go through all stages of the process. I don't have all the answers, and I know this isn't a common problem, but it is something I know I'm experiencing right now at this second...
