Manuel Beta

I've just released the first beta of Manuel, my next-generation doctest project. Being that zope-dev has some of the most well-informed users of doctest (and some of the most well-informed non-users of doctest), I'd like to gather feedback from this group before making an announcement to the wider world. Manuel is available from PyPI (http://pypi.python.org/pypi/manuel) with docs, details, and examples at http://packages.python.org/manuel/. My bug day wrap-up

Hi, here's a quick wrap-up of what I did to zope.i18n today: - I merged the duplicate bugs asking for ngettext support. - I started working on Sphinx documentation by taking Tres' example from zope.event, playing with it, and start pulling in some API documentation. It's really nowhere useful yet, but hey, it's a start. - I merged a (long missing) NAME_RE change from zope.tal.taldefs to zope.i18n. I'm feeling somewhat uncomfortable with having to just blindly copy it over: neither packages test for the change and I was unable to locate where it came from as it seemed to have happened during the large rename/restructure back in 2003. So, what's up for everyone else who joined the bug day? Survey: most obscure errors

What are the most obscure error conditions you've encountered while developing Zopeish[1] applications? [1] ZTK, Grok, Bluebream, the old Zope 3.x KGSes all qualify. I'm talking about situations where the error message/traceback are disconnected from the actual cause. For example, forgetting to add a security declaration in ZCML can cause TraversalError (because ForbiddenAttribute is a subclass of AttributeError), which leads the developer off to a wild goose chase looking for why the attribute is missing (was it misspelled? did it come from an old database?) the first few times this kind of error happens. One of the goals we came up with in the Zope Summit in Halle was to identify the most annoying of these kinds of error messages and fix them. I need your help for the identifying part! Functional areas of Zope

Hi all, at the Zope summit in September, we were talking about what Zope actually is or should be and how to define the goal of the Zope project. This led to the idea of identifying the functional areas of Zope. I'd like to pursue this by starting a discussion about Zope's functional areas among the developer community and hope to come up with a number of commonly agreed-upon items. Wherever it matters, I suggest limiting ourselves to discussing the ZTK in order to keep things focussed. As functional areas (for some examples, see below), we consider diverse, broadly defined tasks and problems that a web developer is being faced with, and that a web framework ought to have an answer for. We hope to be able to define better what Zope is and is not and how it compares to other web frameworks by starting from a set of functional areas and trying to state Zope's answer to each of them. Another benefit from having a grip on functional areas of Zope the project would be the possibility to organise the large and grown set of individual packages that make up Zope's code. To get the discussion started, I'll give a few random examples of functional areas that we thought of immediately: - software architecture (interfaces, components) - data persistence (ZODB) - URL resolution (object traversal) - form generation (form libs for HTML forms, other possibilities?) - resource handling (CSS, Javascript delivery) - client-side programming framework (no good solution so far, people use all sorts of Javascript technologies and programming styles) I hope for the discussion to produce a list of functional areas that most developers agree upon, maybe further areas that need more consideration, and possibly even some clues about Zope's answers to the challenges of each functional area. zope.18n:translate() keyword arguments versus MessageID attributes

Hi, I've fiddled a bit with https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/zope.i18n/+bug/592753 and ended up with an unclear situation: The ``translate'' methods of both zope.i18n and ITranslationDomain have optional parameters for the domain/default/mapping attributes of a message ID. The message ID attributes always override the parameters but it is not said why. (I probed the tests and they at least verify that this is the case but don't state motivation.) As I had to chase this down for quite a while when I originally tried to call zope.i18n.translate() directly (for providing translated emails) it took me quite a while to understand what's going on. I see two possibilities for improving the situation: - don't implicitly ignore the parameters, but raise an exception if both a message id and at least one of the parameters (domain/default /mapping) is given and write some documentation that explains the situation (what is happening and why) or - make the parameters take precendence over the message id attributes So - why not do the latter?
