Because when you change the running zope config in Zope 2.7.0 it has no impact on temp_folder - Sessions.fs is not created when the temporary storage was already in place. I also got many complatins from customer, so I wrote a test suite which is logging to a site each 2 minutes, and if there are problem, it sends emails to all of admins, so they come and restart zope. With prev. Transience, when this keyError appear, it was seen only by 1,2,3 users. With new Transience, when error starts to appear, nobody is able to see any page which uses Session - all sessions became broken. I see Chris post at: http://mail.zope.org/pipermail/zope-dev/2003-March/019116.html As far I see, this bug still existing in Zope 2.6.4, Zope 2.7.0. Its strange because into Changes histore of Zope it seems to be fixed into 2.6.2: Zope 2.6.2 beta 2 Bugs Fixed * TemporaryStorage (which is used by TemporaryFolder, and thus the default sessioning configuration) no longer uses a "LowConflictConnection" database connection. This fixes a bug in which data structures used for session housekeeping data could become desynchronized; the symptom for this was KeyErrors being raised from TransientObjectContainer's get method. As a result, many more conflicts will be raised under high session load, but desynchronization will not occur. Could you please at least point me where I can dig to get it fixed? I will try to read Python code in Transience.Transience but I am not sure in my qualification in this area. Bug reported at zope.org as: http://zope.org/Collectors/Zope/848 but until now there were no comments which help me to fix this. may be something needs to be changed into my code? in the beginning of many scripts I have the following: request=container.REQUEST session=request.SESSION please give me a hint. ZCatalog fast as admin, dog slow as anonymous and other users

Zopistas, My ZCatalog is fast as admin, but dog slow as anonymous and other users. Anyone had this same experience? Details: marjors: Zope 2.6.2 CMF 1.3 Plone 1.0.5 about 50,000 cataloged objects (dual xenon server, plenty of ram, RAID) User folder has 15k users in it, but admin is one of those users. i've factored it way down and a simple search with just 1 Event loaded, like: return context.portal_catalog(Type='Event') is instantaneous for the 'admin' user, but takes about 10 seconds to return 1 SINGLE object. (only 1 Event loaded) imagine the time it takes to search and display 1300 events (which is what's normally in there). ouch. i've rebuilt the indexes, and still no dice. Any help would be greatly appreciated. All my best, Jason Spisak

proposal: serving static content faster

I have put a new proposal up at http://dev.zope.org/Wikis/DevSite/Proposals/FasterStaticContentServing which deals with serving large "static" content objects faster from Zope 2. This is based on some work that Paul Winkler and I did at the PyCon Zope 2 sprint. Comments appreciated. I think this would also be very useful for Zope 3; the concept would just need to be adapted to the new server architecture in use there instead of ZServer. - C

ZPT for CSS, anyone?

Has anyone had a go at building a new templating language for CSS files? I can really see the need as the current prefered way of using DTML has the disadvantage that the css is no longer valid once templated. ZPT of course would be the solution if CSS was XML, but alas :( I was thinking that there must be some way of reusing TAL and/or metal to put expressions in CSS comments. My current need for this is being able to put set correct absolute urls for background images in a css file such that I can still use dreamweaver to do visual editing. Speaking of which, absolute urls are a real pain. There must be a better way of being able to edit files on a file system and have the server use absolute urls without having to write expressions for every single reference? Isn't there some equivilent to the html base tag to specify what "/" means? Threads, Locks, Volatility, and Angst

Greetings. I'm looking for a little wisdom -- specifically, about thread locks and Zope. I'm developing a Python-based product. One of the classes needs to hand out unique IDs to clients as they connect for the first time. I generate these by keeping an index integer in the instance that starts at zero, incrementing it by one for every new client, and using the new value for the unique ID. In order to prevent race conditions when two clients connect almost simultaneously, I have another instance variable in my class that holds a threading.lock(). I call acquire() on that lock just before the increment-and-report code, and release() just after. So far so good. That seemed to work just fine yesterday when I coded it. Then I shut down Zope overnight and started it up again today. Now, I cannot create a new instance of the class without getting the Zope error "UnpickleableError: Cannot pickle <type 'thread.lock'> objects". (I'd swear it was working yesterday, though.) I thought "Okay, no problem. I'll just make the lock variable volatile, since I don't really care whether it persists when Zope shuts down." So I renamed the lock to begin with '_v_'. That solves my "UnpickleableError" problem nicely. Unfortunately, it introduces a different problem: the code that calls acquire() on the lock now throws "AttributeError: 'NoneType' object has no attribute 'acquire'". I'm sure I initialize that variable to a threading.Lock() in the object's __init__ method. So now I'm worried that Zope is doing all kinds of pickling-unpickling activity behind the scenes, and anything I have that's volatile can disappear without warning. Are there any thread-wise Zopistas out there who can steer me right? Zopeservice and sitecustomize

At the beginning of the Month there was a 4 post discussion about this topic. I tried it and it made my pain go away. I'm using Windows 2003 server for this. If you mean prior to rendering the ZPT, the nthat wasn't a usecase you specified ;-) If you mean post-rendering, use a PageTemplateFile and whatever you want inside it.
