Zope container objects can't multitask; Z2 CONFLICT mis-reported

Zope container objects can't multitask. If you try and add more than one item to a folder at a time -- even if they have different ids -- a Z2 CONFLICT error occurs. To add insult to injury, the error message sent to the user seems to be almost random. I've seen both of these: Missing doc string at: http://BEETLEJUICE:8080/folder1 The parameter, <em>id</em>, was omitted from the request. I'm forwarding a message (below) from the Python XML-SIG list, which raises a few questions about Zope's XML plans. They are interesting questions, which I imagine Digital Creations has already considered, but I don't recall seeing any specific discussion here. (finally! :-) and I plan to stay for a while... ;-) I have some comments and a couple of questions that I hope you'll be able to answer. I realize that the information exists somewhere, or I can analyse the code to see what's done or doable and what's not, but I'd better refer to you as more experienced in this area and save some precious time. I'm building a medium-sized website (approx. 150 pages) and I already have some content and a relatively complex layout, all written in valid HTML 4 almost by hand <ouch!>. Continuing this way, as you know, is a dead end. I have been told (and more precisely, the W3C people working here) that I have to put my content in XML, then use XSLT to transform my content and generate the HTML layout. This way, if I want to make radical changes to the layout or the output documents, the only thing I'll have to modify is the transormation rules. I guess that this is not the only solution for my task, but I'd better follow their advice in the long run. So, as a Python addict, I made a quick tour on the Web to see what Python tools exist for the job. The good news is that the XML-SIG has already packaged the low-level machinery of XML -- a very nice piece of work! Another good news is that the FourThought guys have released recently parts of their 4Suite, including the XSLT and XPath packages. I haven't tried them yet, so I'm not in a position to comment whether the implemented subset of the W3C recommendation (PR-xslt-19991008) will suffice for my task. (I can only regret that James Clark's XT was written in Java, and not in Python. I'll tell Vincent Quint to convert him ;-) A third good thing is Zope. I won't comment too much on it because you already know better than me what Zope is and does. What bothers me a little bit in Zope is that I'm not convinced that I can clearly separate content from style. Zope relies on templates, not on transformation rules. So, I wonder whether I really have today the Python basic bricks to perform the following: 0) Define my DTD and deduce the user-friendly forms for 1). 1) Fill my content via user-friendly forms (a la Zope) 2) This content is wrapped and stored in XML. 3) The XML files are processed according to my stylesheets and the XSLT processor. 4) The formatted result (currently in valid HTML 4.0) shines on my screen (when I click on Zope's preview, for example) Basically, I'd like to "plug" the XML/XSLT part in the Zope site-building process. Fundamentally, Zope's DTML resembles XSLT, but as an INRIA employee, I tend to prefer XSLT and the standards my colleages are working on ;-). In the end, is this doable? Are there any missing parts or tools in this chain? I wish that the people at DC consider a strategical move for Zope, so that this excellent product incorporates (or is interfaced with) the W3C standards. Damn, even the examples in Zope are not in valid HTML! DTML is good (it was developped before the current standards), but a shift or a bidirectional converter DTML<->XSL/T would be a major win. Whether this is doable is another story. Seeking Zope programmer

My company is developing a Zope portal website that will also be our company's Intranet. As our deadline approaches (very short now), we are in need of assistance. We need several Products/applications using Zope, Python, MySQL, Apache, Debian box. All of these products are needed ASAP. We are willing to discuss open-sourcing all products. If anyone out there has some extra time during the next 2-4 weeks and would be interested in earning some extra $$, please contact me via private e-mail at liz(a)virtualplancenter.com. Perhaps someone is already working on an open-source product, but a few $$ would help push it along?? Our site will include many features/requirements, a few are listed: free, public email wizards; free, public web hosting wizards; interactive discussions; database querying/updating/inserting; virtual hosting; admin interfaces; various security levels; e-commerce; database results e-mailed daily; and much more. I'm French and a translator, so maybe I could give you a hand when translating or proofreading. I gave it some thought already because I'm trying to convince a French organization to use Zope. If they agree, they'd be better off with a localized version. I wonder how to go about it: for instance, one could use a script to extract localizable strings for the source files (with suitable context information such as file name and possibly def name) and create a glossary. After translation the glossary would be applied back on the sources with another script. This would make it easy to - translate to other languages; - translate new Zope versions; - create a glossary to ensure consistency eg. when translating products. That's how I usually translate resource files for Windows apps (eg. .dlg files). Or do you plan to modify the US sources to store messages outside of code, in special files (eg. stringtables in Windows apps)? Feel free to get in touch if you want to discuss it. Cheers. Alexandre

Very grate project! I am very interested in both XML and Zope. I am doing some bibliographic data processing with xml. I want to use zop if it is possible. What I am wanting now is : 1. The ability to handle utf-8 charset in Zope including full set of chars with chinese han, and other characters. 2. The ability to extract from a xml doc some sub-tree which meet a specific specification and sent it as a new xmldocument. I perfer to let the browser to do the xsl transformation because it can be more flexible and dynamic. 3. To create xml document with many sister tags which have the same tag name. I got a lot of such things because there are always many isbn for a book, many authors for a book, etc. I need to use the same tag to represent them. Rgs, Kent Sin

Feedback wanted on GenericUserFolder

I've put together a functional GenericUserFolder for people to look at and give me feedback before a full release: http://www.zope.org/Members/Zen/GenericUserFolder It is simply a userfolder that calls ZODB methods to populate userlists, return roles etc. Out of the box it makes UserDB obsolete, and would allow etcUserFolder, LDAPAdaptor etc. to be cut back to external methods (giving more flexibility and allowing features like enhanced cookie handling to be done in one product that in every product). I don't know if the cookie authentication is working - I need to rewrite this as the implementation I stole from etcUserFolder (with the rest of the framework) seems to store the password in plaintext in the cookie. I'll end up passing a SHA hash of some description I think. The results from the methods are being cached in _v_ volatile attributes. I think this is the correct thing to do, but this means there is a seperate cache per thread (increased memory usage) as well as allowing the possibility of inconsistancys between threads as the seperate caches will expire at different times. Unless I steal someones existing Session product, I'll end up having to store the cookies in a dictionary on the server (as the clients won't be passing a password in a form I can send to authenticate) - I don't think this will cause a problem for any but the largest sites. Any hints on what will happen to this product with the eventual release of the portal toolkit? Will it become obsolete, or will it require reimplemntation from the ground up to fit in with the new framework? I was about to hack UserDb to make it store the user auth details in an SQLSession. The nice thing about this is that it's really really easy to make sure the login times out properly. (Also, when they re-login, if you've kept the expired session around, you can drop them back where they were).
