'REQUEST' lost on DTML rendering

I have a Product which works fine under Zope 2.1.6 but am having trouble moving it to 2.2.1 This product creates temporary instances of objects and then uses __bobo_traverse__ to traverse class operators specified in the URL which create the objects that are rendered via DTML methods. The very first time one of these objects is called (after tehe server is started), all works fine. With all subsequest calls, the DTML methods which render the results cannot locate the REQUEST dictionary anymore. My class methods can still see the REQUEST dictionary just fine with every call, but REQUEST apparently gets lost between when the bobo_traverse returns and when the DTML renderer starts. (and yes, this all worked fine prior to 2.2x :^) I'm stumped. How could the REQUEST object get passed the first time to the DTML renderer and never thereafter? What changed thereabouts? Thanks

Zope Devers, THis is going to seem strange coming from someone who hasn't been on the list in a long time, but I was at the Linux Expo in San Jose, and sat in on a Web app talk. Lutris was in charge of the panel, and they talked about xmlc. I went to their booth and asked about it. I think it could be the best way to get hard-core python people to jump on zope's band-wagon, and stop the dtml frowning. If you who are in the know about zope have time, please read a quick bit on what it is. http://xmlc.enhydra.org Especially the tutorial: http://staff.plugged.net.au/dwood/xmlc/index.html Is there any obvious reason why Zope wouldn't benefit tremendously from this design and programming separation and pure python boost? I haven't understood this gripe ever since I started reading mail with Gnus. Before anyone groans, I'm not sure that Gnus is ready for general use by anyone who doesn't want to learn elisp - but surely there's anther reader with these features? The point that I'm trying to make is that a mailing list has all the strucure needed to keep abreast of an important thread. I don't think it's perfect when you can't afford to miss a single important article, but it works great for general lists. Gnus treats mail & news as the same, and allows you to score posters, threads, messages, etc. both manually and adaptively. Threads can be presented by order of their score. Adaptive scoring is what really makes it work. The normal reading commands - read article, kill thread, save article, catchup (mark unread articles as read) can affect the scores. So, reading articles in a thread tends to make it float to the top, and posters who contribute to well-read threads elevate future threads that they contribute to. The inverse for killed threads, less so for caught up threads. I can read comp.lang.python when it has 3000 unread articles, by skimming 100-500 articles, reading some, catching up or killing the rest, and saving other 2500 for later. I draw in what I'm interested in from the mass of unread articles first, each time, and the stuff that I rarely get around to is the stuff that I don't miss. Same with rec.bicycles.soc - when the article count gets to 200-300, I read the 2-10 articles that I'm probably interested in, and miss the 95% which is almost always noise. That's why I resist moving to other fora. I've never seen one that lets me use better tools. Okay, my download finished while I wrote this, back to work :) -- Karl Anderson karl(a)digicool.com

CoreSessionTracking proposal

I just read the CoreSessionTracking proposal. I am very concerned about the "long living browser id". * Why should a browser id live longer than the session data maintained for the browser? This means, if the session lifetime is in the order of an hour, the cookie need not live longer than, say, a day. * I am *VERY* suspicious whenever I get a cookie with an expiration date more than a few days in the future. I do not see any reason why a site should be able to track my activity over a longer period of time -- at least no without my explicit consent. I tend to refuse long living cookies and as sites continue to send cookies on any request, I disable cookies all together. If this means, a site can not be visited, I stop visiting the site. If Zope tries to implement long living browser ids, I fear, Zope sites will have a high chance, I will no longer visit them. Security: * I do not think "Annonymous" should have the permission "Add Session Data Objects". Session handling should be transparent, including allocation of a session data object. * I do not think "Annonymous" should have "Access Session Data" permission with the exception to its own session data. Sessions may contain confident information that must not be revealed to other users. Again, session handling should be transparent, implemented by a mechanism that implements its own special purpose access policy (access to session data only by the session owner). Consistency: * sometimes "__zsession__" and sometime "_ZopeId" seems to be used to refer to an identifier used for session tracking * how is it possible to have nested "Session ID Managers" (necessary for delegation) with "getZopeSessionID" a singleton? As I understand it, the "singleton" property prevents any child to reimplement the method. I must be wrong with this assumption. Dieter

two-phase-commit question

ZOPE_HOME/lib/python/Shared/DC/ZRDB/TM.py Glancing over the Transaction TM mixin class... i noticed a line commit=tpc_abort=tpc_begin i can understand tpc_begin=commit, but the abort seems strange. if an abort happens in the two phase commit the equality doesn't make sense to me. whats going on here? Is this meant to be overidden? TIA Kapil

When I execute your code (Zope 2.2.2), I get the expected result. For me, it seems, that you have a variable named "row_index" in "REQUEST.environ" with value "0". According to source documentation (ZPublisher.HTTPRequest), "environ" has precedence over "other" (where ".set" places it definition). Try a different name with a very low change of being already used: e.g. "row_index" --> "xyz123456". Dieter

why cant i rename an object from an external method

Heres a treat. I'm trying to write an external method to rename objects. I have approx 10,000 to rename so a script would be nice. No problem I thought, imitate a forms manage_renameObject and CopySupport.py can do the work. Rename works fine from the web form, but not from a script. (ASPNTools.getsomeobjectsfromstring returns a bunch of objects, Ive tried replicating this with resolve_url and get different namespace error, could this be a clue?). Heres my script: def search(self, REQUEST=None): l = ASPNTools.getsomeobjectsfromstring(self, REQUEST['path'], REQUEST) for obj in l: ob = obj.aq_parent # get the folder ob.manage_renameObject(obj.id(), 'Foo') return 'renamed' Here's my problem: The object 100BASEFX does not support this operation .... Have you had a look at the ExtFile Product (http://www.zope.org/Members/MacGregor/ExtFile)? It basically does all the things you want to achive with the PersistentBlob (i.e. storing files externally and making them accessible for external processes), except that it's not that deeply integrated into the Zope machinery and stores the files only in the file system and not in an RDBMS (which nevertheless could be implemented).
