FYI: Zope 2.6.1 beta 1 today...

Hi all - We're planning on releasing a Zope 2.6.1 b1 today, and I wanted to give the dev folks a heads-up and let people know the plan for getting to 2.6.1 final. The release today will contain some ZODB / ZEO fixes as well as the datetime fix and some other fixes added since 2.6.0. We will be having a "bug day" next Tuesday, and the goal will be that those fixes will also go into the Zope-2_6-branch to be included in a 2.6.1 beta 2 to be release hopefully around the end of next week. Assuming there are no issues with the b2 release, we'll plan on making it final a week or so after that for a late xmas present :) This schedule should also provide enough time for the valiant volunteers working on the 2.6.1 version of the Zope Book to finalize things for the release. ZOPE + SSL

Hello all: Which is the best (or more used) solution at this moment for having Zope supporting SSL secure connections? ZOPE + Apache + Apache mod_ssl + openSSL + Virtual_Host(or similiar solution)? Is ok, but it is not a little bit contradictory to need to use a second Web Server for supporting the first one? Redirecting URLs, and all... Dunno, there would be a day where ZOPE could have it's own support? ZOPE + OpenSSL + M2Crypto + SWIG? (this one rewrites Zserver parts) Is a little bit tricky to handle with the building, and i've found many exception problems when using it, especifically in BIO access types. Looks like the error handling is not very improved. ZOPE + OpenSSL + pyOpenSSL? This needs to be integrated in ZOPE, as a product, or anyway. Is there a most used recipe or case study examples? The environment where i'm planning to do it could be directed to Win32 platform, and at least over Zope 2.6.1 release. Regards. zopectl start not working on Mac OS X

We are planning on shipping Zope 2.7 with the Plone 2 installer for Mac OS X. I can start a Zope instance on Mac OS X 10.2.8 using $INSTANCE_HOME/bin/runzope, but not using $INSTANCE_HOME/bin/zopectl start. Zope 2.7.0 b3 regressions

Hi! Migrating a CMF Site from Zope 2.6 to Zope 2.7.0 b3, I stumbled over these two Zope 2.7 issues: 1.) absolute_url(relative=1) behaves different ---------------------------------------------- 'relative' was changed from 'relative to site object' to 'relative to server root'. This is an API change and breaks Products like CMF. See <http://zope.org/Collectors/Zope/809> I propose to revert this change. 2.) reindexIndex not 100% backwards compatible ---------------------------------------------- CMF's CatalogTool inherits from ZCatalog and overrides catalog_object. Zope's reindexIndex fails because CMF doesn't implement the new catalog_object API. See <http://zope.org/Collectors/Zope/1134> I propose to add a capability check in reindexIndex. I'd volunteer to fix these issues in CVS as proposed, but maybe the people who made these changes still feel responsible for their code or there are objections regarding the proposed fixes. WebDAV Collection/Resource Chameleon Question

We are trying to make a 'folderish' (WebDAV Collection) class appear as a WebDAV Resource to WebDAV clients. I won't go into the reasons why we want to do this unless someone is interested. We have made several attempts at this but have been unsuccessful to date. Rather than go into all the gory details about what we have tried I am asking if anyone could tell me if it is even technically possible to trick the WebDAV machinery (server/client) into treating this class in this way? Zope is, generally speaking, *very* extensible -- see for example the long list of 3rd pary add-on products at http://www.zope.org/Products I think Python is one of the greatest strengths of Zope. Its not only a modern full-fledged OOP language, comes with great libraries (see http://python.org/doc/current/modindex.html, and has even more to download separately) but is simply a joy to program in. Newbie Question

I hope I'm posting to the right mailing list. There were so many to decide from. I've just been introduced to Zope, and am curious on how it will fit into my company's plans. I'm currently learning Java, and was starting to learn the RedHat Web Application Framework. I've found Zope in an article on the web, and started to look into it. It looks to be just as scalable, but I'm curious on how extensible it is, as well as, it's power in a corporate environment. For example, how extensible is it, to modify the security module and have it authenticate against LDAP? (I don't want all my users to remember yet another password) Also, how powerful is Python as compared to Java? Since it uses a native compiler, it stands to reason that it would be faster than Java, but what of it's objects and packages? (i.e. Does it have an image manipulation package, or networking packages?) I must say, seeing the documentation and books alone, tells me the product is good, and something I can learn. I see alot of "Hope for Zope" <grin, couldn't resist>, but I don't want to get into it, just to see if it doesn't fit into my plans. For those who want a couple of examples, I have 3 projects for our intranet/extranet/internet applications: 1). Images and cataloging (where, our development team can upload their images, and the intranet application will take that image and export it to a JPG to update the web catalog, and move the original file to our FTP site for our photographers. 2). Document Management (Uploading of files, and inputting data to index on those files for searching) 3). Obviously the usual (Content Management and Portals) which I'm sure Zope does a good job at. can I suppress inheritence of local roles?

apply()'s PendingDeprecationWarning

Python 2.3, 2.3.1, and 2.3.2 generate a PendingDeprecationWarning when apply() is called. This is reasonable since apply() has been deprecated, but can be a real nuissance for code that intends to be portable to Python versions back to 1.5.2. Unfortunately, the logging package distributed with Python has that constraint (don't ask why, please; I really don't know!). Anyone watching the results of the test runs has probably noticed that these warnings are polluting the test output still, and aren't being triggered by Zope code. Guido has conceded that these warnings can be removed from Python, so I've removed them for the upcoming Python 2.3.3 release as well as for the future Python 2.4.
