Versions: should they die?

To anyone not following the "Problem committing zope 'version' objects" thread on zope(a)zope.org: It's been proposed that Versions should be at least stamped in the ZMI with big warnings, or possibly disabled altogether. Numerous users have been bit by the fact that versions basically do not work as advertised, leading in various cases to zodb corruption or work that can't be saved. There are other security issues that Oliver Bleutgen raised privately which I won't state here. Comments? If I remember correctly, though, there was still a lot in question about legitimate use cases. The web-services cluster-safety use-case I sketched out here (http://mail.zope.org/pipermail/zope3-dev/2002-October/003112.html) is still (perhaps) a valid case, but ONLY in a very-carefully constructed application (and even that case leaves me wanting a better app-level way to do it). I think I agree with the feeling that versions should stay in ZODB, but be depreciated/marked as "official evil" in ZMI. It would appear that _read_data only returns a single Pdata object if you chuck it a large string rather than the linked list of Pdata objects it would if you chucked it a FileUpload instance. Surely it should return a linekd list of Pdata objects in either case?

RE: DBtab and BDBStorage

Hey Shane, After I converted a Plone folder into its own ZODB, I believe it still has the contents of the old site in it while loading the one folder from the new database. So, I copied data.fs to be files.fs and then deleted in the plone interface, created the mount point and it came back. Loading from the files.fs The thing is, all the old content from data.fs is still in files.fs just sitting dormant and inaccessible. This makes me wonder if the old stuff from my files folder is sitting dormant in data.fs? Do you know of any way to make fix these databases so they don't have the areas that they are not being used for anymore? Thanks! Andrew R. Halko

They probably will not even have a local Zope installation. I want a way to provide some useful and current documention with minimum effort on our part. This approach at the least gives function signatures and zope permissions for *all* Zope products (not just ours). It gives more information if one makes a concerted effort to use the doc strings. I'm sure this model is in keeping with much of the wiki/portal community's documentation requirements - hence my wish to publicise the work, and perhaps get some involvement from people with a far greater knowledge of Python/Zope internals than I to make it into a useful tool for a wider community. I am happy to (i) provide the infrastructure to progress development; (ii) offload it to anyone else who wishes to do so; (iii) continue to use it for our internal purposes in it's current form.
