Installing Python Modules Under Zope On Windows

I have a hardware constraint where I have to run Zope on Windows. This has worked pretty well for me because Zope 2.7 used my "system" instance of Python 2.3.x. At least, that's my assumption since runzope.bat pointed at the system instance of Python. This setup was nice because it made it very easy to install Python modules (like PIL). When I ran the module installation executable, it would find my system instance of Python in the registry and install the module properly. With Zope 2.8.1, the "default" setting seems to be using the embedded Python interpreter that came with Zope. This is a problem because the embedded versions of Python do not appear in the registry, making it impossible to install a lot of Python modules on Windows. I thought that the following script (http://effbot.org/zone/python-register.htm) would allow me to add embedded versions of Python to my registry. However, you can't add more than one major version of a python release (2.2, 2.3, etc) to the registry. So if my system version of Python is the 2.3.x branch, and I want to use an embedded 2.3.x version of Python with Zope, then I'm out of luck if I want to install many Python modules with it. I can still edit runzope.bat so that it points at the system instance of Python, but I don't know if this is a best practice. Has anyone had any luck installing Python modules in an embedded version of Python on Windows? Is there a better way to work around this than referencing the system version of Python in the runzope.bat file? Thanks in advance for any help! Tom Purl

Maintainer position for the Zope Windows builds vacant

Hi, Christian Theune, the current maintainer of the windows builds, announced to step down as maintainer. This means that this position is vacant. So this is your chance to become famous :-) To be honest, doing Zope releases is a bit of work and not always fun but it is work that has to be done by someone. So if you are interested and if you have the resources, raise your finger. Since new Zope 2 releases are scheduled for October I would like to see this position filled asap. I will definitely continue on the source releases but I have not enough Windows know-how to do it myself. Since there are lot of *serious* Zope-on-Windows users I do expect that someone takes over this great job. Having no volunteer for the Windows builds would mean that only source code releases would be available in the future. I'm fine with that but possibly not all Zope-on-Windows users...so if you depend on Zope-on-Windows you should do something for your dependency to be fulfilled. Cheers, Andreas

Hi, I plan to release Zope 2.8.2 + 2.7.8 on 12.9.2005. As discussed a while ago I will release minor releases without going through a beta cycle except when there are critical fixes that need further testing. Andreas

Speed win in Python's urllib.quote

After looking at it, I have found a pretty huge speed win available, posted to Python's SF tracker as bug #1285086: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1285086&group_id=… Zope makes *heavy* use of urllib.quote (quoting each element of the path in 'absolute_url', for instance), which makes it a particularly interesting speedup for us. indexing multiple strings with ZCTextIndex broken in Zope 2.7.7

Hi there, The behavior of ZCTextIndex was intended to be able to index strings, but also lists of strings. The list of strings construction is useful in case one wants to index multiple pieces of text without generating patterns that aren't really there: ['foo bar', 'qux baz'] but we don't want 'bar qux' to be a pattern. Zope 2.7.7 appears to break this behavior due to a change in index_object in Products/ZCTextIndex/ZCTextIndex.py, and only accepts strings, not lists of strings anymore. The underlying indexing code is however capable of dealing with lists of strings. This problem has evidentially been broken and fixed on the Zope 2.8 branch, but remains on the Zope 2.7 branch. This comment is also present on Zope 2.8: Enter the document with the specified documentId in the index under the terms extracted from the indexed text attributes, each of which should yield either a string or a list of strings Are there plans for a Zope 2.7.8 that fixes this? The Zope 2.7 branch in CVS still appears to be broken. Regards, Martijn
