PYTHONPATH

I've been working with workingenv.py and zope a bit. It offers a very nice fashion of working with zope(constrains python and setuptools to operating in a restricted environment). there are some lumps. you have to call the --home flag when creating the environment. I haven't successful made a zope checkout in to a workingenv itself. those are small potatoes. More pressing is that currently to make this work, you have to hand edit bin/zopectl and bin/runzope like so:: PYTHONPATH="$SOFTWARE_HOME" to: PYTHONPATH="$SOFTWARE_HOME:$PYTHONPATH" Would there be any negative sideeffect to make this change the default in the instance skeleton? It seems like if you've set your PYTHONPATH and start zope, you would expect that path to be available. Anyone object to this going forward? Anyone think this is a bug that should be fixed(on older versions)? comments, suggestions appreciated. -w

We could even have a button "Export to disk module" which exports the current templates + scripts to a view + methods + templates all on disk. [ZODB] probable small hole in transaction management

ATT: Crosspost. Please reply to "zodb-dev(a)zope.org" ("Reply-To" header set). We recently have had a problem that seems to indicate a small hole in ZODB (3.4) transaction management. Here is the sequence of events: We have got a repeated "ConflictError", until ZPublisher gave up. After this, the ZODB connection seems to be in a strange state: We get continuous ERROR ZODB.Connection Close callback failed for <ZODB.Mount.MountedConnectionCloser instance at 0x9653a28c> ... ConnectionStateError: Cannot close a connection joined to a transaction A 'Shared.DC.ZRDB.TM.TM' instance no longer registers with Zope's transaction system (almost surely, because it "_registered" flag is still set). The relational database "behind" this TM gets very unhappy with its never ending transaction.... No other entries in the logfile that could help to understand what happens. -- Dieter

Future of ZClasses

I found a thread (from March 2006) discussing the future of zclasses, but i could not determine if a 'final' decision had been made. According to Changes.txt for Zope 2.10.0: "ZClasses are deprecated and should no longer be used. In addition any code related to the ZClasses (re)distribution mechanism is removed." Does this mean that any application which incorporates zclasses will break if upgraded to zope 2.10.x? The reason i ask is that i have a huge legacy system (zope 2.6) that is about to be upgraded to a more current version of zope, and i am wondering if this is the time to replace the zclass utilization (a seriously non-trivial task!). SESSION values only refreshing with Shift-reload

I have a basic DTML document that has several input fields on it. When the user submits the form, validation occurs and goes to an error page, if need be. On my error page (dtml-document), there is a link to go back to the previous page to correct your errors. However, when I click on that link, my SESSION values are not displaying. But if I press Shift-Reload, I see my values. Any ideas? Upon Submitting the first form, here is what happens: populate_session_vars (This sets the SESSION values based on what was entered on the form ie. <dtml-call REQUEST.SESSION.set('variablename', REQUEST.form['variablename'])> ) validate_form (This validates that the required fields are filled in) If there's an error, the user goes to the error page and from there, clicks on a link to go back to the main form to fix their errors (dtml-document). wsgi/paste pipelines in Zope 2 or 3?

I've been doing a lot of work with Paste in the past year, cutting down on my deployments of Zope. Now I'm taking a new look at Zope 3 and Zope 2, and wondering if it's possible to use paste pipeline/filter in either version of Zope. I've looked at http://cheeseshop.python.org/pypi/zope.paste and http://awkly.org/archive/zopepaste-wsgi-applications-in-zope-3-using-pasted… But what I need is not just a wsgi application hosted in Zope, but rather, a wsgi filter that can intercept the call chain during traversal. Has anyone else encountered this need or have thoughts about it? Distributed Object Use Case for Zope 3 developers.

Martijn Faasen makes the point that it is important for the Zope 3 developers to have good use cases. So here we go. Here is my distributed Object use case for Zope 3 developers. Can I do this in Zope 3? I run a job board for each technology. I have one job board for zope/plone developers, and another one for Linux System Administrators. Right now I have quite low traffic, and I run all my job boards off of one zope instance. But if this should ever be a hit, I can imagine running one zope instance per job board, or even multiple zope instances for one job board using zeo on its own server. The available parallelism is quite strong in Zope 2. Now here is the problem. Say one of you is both a Linux Admin and a Zope/Plone developer. Right now you would have to post your resume twice on two different job boards. If you changed your resume, you would have to change it in two different servers. Sometime soon, I hope that you will be able to just apply once. You would fill out the Zope skills question box, and the Linux Administrator skills question box, and the server will automagically create copies of your record on both job boards. If those are on separate servers, then that is a distributed migration of objects. When you return to edit your data and update your resume, that information needs to be propogated to the other job board on the other server as well. I hope that is a helpful use case for the Zope 3 developers. Of course maybe things are done totally differently in Zope 3 than in Zope 2. Here is another distributed use case, which I do admit is more speculative. Performance reasons might encourage me to have one server in the US, and one in India. Reportedly Google localization takes into account where the server is located. So if I want to compete globally in the US and India, I would want my Indian candidate objects to migrate to my Indian server, and my US candidate objects to migrate to my US server. I think I could do this with ZClasses. Can I do it with Zope 3? I hope that helps. Chris

ZClass Maintenance

Jim Fulton has offered to navigate me through this process, but I have not yet taken him up on the offer. I am waiting until I am sufficiently motivated to do something about it before bothering him. It always seems that someone else is more motivated than I am, so I have not yet had to do anything. It would be very interesting to know how many hours of work it would take to bring ZClasses up to date on the current release of Zope 2. Then I could hand it off to my favorite offshore developer. Part of me is interested in doing it myself. Then I would understand the whole stack under ZClasses. Better yet, I should show up the Plone conference, where I should be able to find someone to answer my questions. >ZClasses don't get better from writing long postings.
