O.k I am really new to Zope. And I want to do the following. First I am running Zope in NT (believe me I rather us Linux but my boss doesn't want to). I want to create an object let's say links which will contain a set of links with properties such as link_target, frame_target so I can then use a predefined DTML and for each link on links print the links. I also want to build a form so people can enter this links. How can I do this? is there a porduct or zclass out there I can use? ZCatalog: Searching by title & keyword

Hi, I'm trying to get a catalog set up to search DTML Documents, FAQ Entries, KB Entries, & HOW-TO's by both a word in the title, and a word in the document. This needs to be in a one-piece submission, not two separate text boxes. I can get either-or for the DTML documents, but not for the FAQ, KB, or HOW-TO entries. It's not Python, but a highly developed OO revision management algorithm is now Open Source, in the form of the Xanadu project. www.udanax.com Some may balk at adapting a product 30 years in the making, and never shipped. Presents a bit of a challenge in the fortitude area, but there may be some inspiration there, at least. Later, Jerry S.

That was done during the alpha/beta transition period to Zope 2.0, mainly due to the core architectural changes and the need to get wide usage of the 2.0 code from bleeding-edge folks while still being able to provide incremental updates for people who (understandably) could not use the unstable code, since the alpha/ beta period lasted a fairly long time. While this sort of thing may happen whenever we go from 2.x -> 3.0, the general Zope release policy is that there is one current stable release, and those who want to live on the edge can use remote CVS if they so choose. Your point about seeing lots of posts about bugs fixed and new features is well taken -- we have recently solved some of the internal operational roadblocks that tended to hold up releases. Starting very soon, we will be able to provide much more frequent and regular stable releases than we have in the past, so there will be far less lag time in getting these fixes/features out. Yes, they could be a real bitch :^) For those interested, you might take a look at the WebDAV DeltaV project - it is taking up the task of "web based versioning and configuration management" that the initial DAV group punted on. Their draft spec points out many of the issues involved. In fact, one of our hopes was that by the time we needed real CM / version control in Zope that someone else like DeltaV would have solved many of the hairy problems (for some definition of "solved"). Save As ...

Hello, I would like to use a link for saving the active document (.html file generated with a dtml-document) for Netscape. Anybody knows to how to do it (without press CTRL-S, or not go File / Save As) with Zope or using JavaScript ? Hi, Looked at the version feature of Zope. All nice and good. But it would be great, cool etc. to have a version control system like RCS, CVS integrated in Zope. Each time a document is changed a version number is incremented and a backup or differences are stored etc. On a larger scale this would be required. Cannot see that this would be impossible to implement, though I cannot do it myself, since I`m a Zope newbie. ;-> Anyhow, just an idea. Thomas

Apparently I wasn't very clear. My intention was to develop this in Python (I've created a grand total of 1 ZClass so far in my life, and that was solely to figure out how to add properties to my python code :) ). Note: I already implemented everything I need personally as a Python module and went on with my work :) . In reading the interfaces Wiki, it seems as though there is an artificial distinction between PropertyManager and PropertySheet-based objects. For instance, my current project has defined a PropertyManager-like interface base class using the PropertySheet interfaces, so that from that base class either mechanism can be used. >From this point, it is a fairly trivial idea to consider replacing the original PropertyManager mechanism with a PropertySheets-based mechanism (keeping the same interface and semantics as PropertyManager) (the advantage to this is to allow all PropertyManager objects to use the more advanced property types and support mechanisms, while reducing the total amount of code). The question of how to implement/re-implement PropertySheets, seems to be the most important one. A global registry works, but is limited. Allowing for simple sub-classing of PropertySheets and using, for instance, attribute lookup on the individual PropertySheet would work, and allows for locally relevant data types, customised input for individual sheet types etc. The problem with this approach is that the workings of the PropertySheet class have suddenly become something which must be understood to work with custom data types (that is, one more piece of information to add to the Zen of Zope (this is, compared to the total Zen, not huge, but the mental load of grokking Zope is already quite high)). RIPP looks capable, but is currently very young, and will not likely support creating a PropertyManager/PropertySheet interface. This is probably "the future", but is not likely to support "the past". Incidentally, knowing about the Wiki would have been a great help these last few months. Why is the interfaces Wiki table of contents not linked directly off the documentation page? And why are Wiki's not indexed (do a search on www.zope.org for PropertyManager and you only come up with one reference). Sure, indexing a Wiki might be intensive, but the information is, well, important :) . I will consider creating a new Wiki, though I am rather short of time (too long spent spelunking the depths of Zope). It might be simpler to provide another implementation (using PropertySheet attribute look up instead of a global registry) and solicit comments on that. It is often necessary to have slightly more complex data types on your Z-Class-like products. For instance, in my current project, I need to be able to set VRML-style vectors (particularly colors and three-element float vectors). Zope allows for creating converters fairly easily, so that you can register code for interpreting data types. However, Zope handles the creation of input fields for property pages through a hard-coded if/elif/else mechanism in OFS/properties.dtml . The result is that your non-standard datatype shows up as "Unrecognized field type" and will not be part of the form when submitted (which will often cause logic errors if (as is likely) it is a required property). Of course, it is possible to create custom manage documents for each property page which has more advanced data types, but this almost completely obviates the value of using property pages (i.e. automatic management of property sets such that the programmer need not even consider the management interface). As of yet, I don't see a clean way of fixing this problem other than re-writing properties.dtml to call out to an extensible mechanism for generating edit fields. To make this ideal, you would allow, for instance, dropping in a more advanced date editor (such as a calendar) to replace the default text-field version, or allowing for "object" fields where you can paste or create generic objects etc. If I do this work (at least the basic mechanisms, if not the ideal ones), would Digital Creations be willing to incorporate the changes? I am currently developing on 2.1.4, but can upgrade if there have been any changes in this area. If not, are there any suggestions on other means to accomplish the same ends (complex property data types)? Here is the example of creating the converters: A product wishing to use these converters merely imports this module, and is then able to use property types such as VRML97_SFVec3f (a single-field vector composed of three-floats). Currently, they will have to also create custom property management pages as well :( .
