The viability of a Zope IDE

Hi, I have justed gotten started with Zope, and am planning on building a major Zope product (http://www.bionode.com/cis) I know already that this project is going to require a LOT of coding, and was wondering if it would be possible to build a Zope IDE along the lines of the Homesite/Coldfusion IDE by Allaire. I thought that a good one could be built using a GUI like wxPython, and include a built-in Python interpreter, online-reference, source editor for HTML, DTML, Python, external methods, etc., a graphical debugger, and an interface to the actual publishing system, where you could manage content , users, etc. DTML files and such could then be exported through the interface with Zope and merged with the system (objects could be extracted, too). I dunno if this is a stupid question or not - I'm still learning Python and Zope, but it sounds like it could be neat, and I wouldn't mind putting some effort into something like that. Text object with dtml code fragment

Dear Developers, I have difficult to put code fragments with incomplete dtml code into Zope. Zope just parse it and report error. Is it possible to prevent this by making the dtml rendering as a method say dtml or html such that calling the object by its name will return its content as is and calling the name.dtml will sent the rendered page. This also make the zope site look like a normal site.

Announce: First step in PythonMethods

It took longer than I thought, thanks partly to a nasty stomach flu, but I've taken the first step in creating a PythonMethod Product. http://www.zope.org:18200/Members/4am/PythonMethod has the nitty-gritty. I'm satisfied with the performance of SafeBlock; Rough testing (available at the site) indicates that loading from ZODB is comparable in speed to DTML, and execution is an order of magnitude faster. Next step is to wrap this up in a Product, and think about what exactly 'import' should do in PythonMethod code.

I just really want to ring in as being totally opposed to the scheduler running INSIDE Zope. The Python interpreter lock is already becoming a burden in various places, and we've carefully danced around it to keep performance reasonable. Additional tasks (which might be VERY CPU intensive, and heavy on the Python code) would only make this problem worse. I think a ZClient external application that manipulates the database directly would be much more interesting, and much lower load on the Zope process. This doesn't mean (as I said in another message) that you can't store the configuration information in Zope, it just means the code path isn't inside of Zope. Chris -- Chris Petrilli

First some jerking to get things straight: I still think we should do the scheduler with a queue, we can always convert to multiple threads later. Let's keep it simple and expand. Scheduled Event objects are to be based on DTML Methods with some extra properties to set up frequence, etc. The Scheduler is a Folder object that only allows Event objects to be added. At least, I haven't thought of any scenario where it would be useful to add anything else. I am still thinking of a queue implementation, where worker threads pick off events to execute. Events are inserted into the queue based on who's next to be executed. I managed to checkout Zope2, but how do I checkout XMLDocument ? Zope RPC

I'm using RPC. I've defined an identity function function: def foo( anarg ): return anarg When I call it with foo( 5 ) I get back (<mime...>, '5') Is it supposed to cast all arguments to string? When I call it with foo( (5,3) ) I get back a complicated HTML document where 5 is in the title and 3 is buried in the body. If I call it as foo((5,3,4)) it returns '(5,3,4)' Paul Prescod

You could make a property sheet for those attributes and simply not make a management tab for that propertysheet. I think this would effectively do what you want.
