Comparing folder instances

Hi, A quick question. How do I compare folder instances ?(or any instances as a matter of fact). Here is a simple code showing what I tried: <dtml-in "objectValues(['Folder'])"> <dtml-var "_.getitem('sequence-item')"> <dtml-var "images"> <dtml-var "_.getitem('sequence-item')==images"> </dtml-in> Here is now the resulting HTML <Folder instance at 85cf958> <Folder instance at 85cf958> 0 <Folder instance at 858a168> <Folder instance at 85cf958> 0 Why isn't the first comparison returning true? What I want to use is something like: <dtml-in "objectValues(['Folder'])"> <dtml-if "_.getitem('sequence-item')==images"> EQUAL <dtml-else> NOT EQUAL </dtml-if> </dtml-in> Thanks a lot in advance for your comments. Hi Folks, As for "re-doing" DTML, there's a cogent point made in Extreme Programming circles that goes something like this: "Names matter. For every time someone writes (types?) the name of an object, it will be read 10 times. Pick Good Names." Much of the DTML confusion arises from "names" that look like they were chosen to save typing effort. That may be OK for a project that will never be used by more than a small handful of folks who can answer questions for each other, but Open Source Zope is going on it's second birthday now. Too many newbies keep stumbling over things like "_", which should have been named something meaningful quite some time ago. But that's just one example. Instead of x vs. "x", how about render(x), or x.render(), and execute(x), or x.execute(). Maybe expr="x" and name="y" are clear to someone, but what matters to me is what process is going to be carried out on x and y, and I can't tell that from reading DTML. I do understand that one of the points of OO is that I shouldn't have to know the details of the actual process that happens when I hand one object to another. Ironically, as things are, I have to "know" anyhow, in order to get things working. But the worst part is, even after working through many examples of complex DTML, this stuff is still not "obvious". The greatest mystery to me is how something this obscure could have possibly been written in Python, which is about as obvious as code gets. Still Zopin', Jerry S.

_setObject error - urgent!

Hi, I think I have traced my error with cut and paste, I am getting an error on _setObject. If the object is not registered with Zope properly this will be a problem. Basic synopsis: Im importing an object from a script so Im getting a handle to the folder I would like the object to be in: this is obj. Then I call add and set object: obj._setObject(id, globals()[doctype](id, m)) This rather unusual syntax allows me to use a constructor for man different objects. The type is specified in 'doctype', I then get this error: 2000-08-31T16:56:57 PROBLEM(100) ASPNDoc Error: [exceptions.NameError: cat] Any ideas? Thanks in advance

New version of BTreeFolder

Hi gang, This version just fixes a bug with the folder contents tab on Windows. For some reason, on Windows 95 (and perhaps other platforms) the Python interpreter behaves differently enough that if you use a class attribute from a different module and put it in your own class, you may in fact be modifying its global context. It's probably a bug in Python. As a workaround, this version of BTreeFolders doesn't have the "details" tab anymore. http://www.zope.org/Members/hathawsh/BTreeFolder/BTreeFolder-0.1.1.tar.gz BTW has anyone done any semi-formal speed tests? It's rumored that a custom getattr in Python can cause a bit of a slowdown. We could write a custom getattr in C to solve the problem. But we don't want to do any premature optimization. Shane
